WelcomeThis season sees Graffeg publish its first children’s list – and it’s a rather good one too. Perfect, written by the award-winning Nicola Davies, is a story of anticipation, disappointment, acceptance and love. Beautifully illustrated by Cathy Fisher, it tells the story of a young boy learning to accept his baby sister’s disability.

Our new children’s list also features three beautifully illustrated rhyming books for younger children, again written by Nicola Davies: The Word Bird, Animal Surprises and Into The Blue. Each poem explores the natural world and is wonderfully illustrated by exciting new talent Abbie Cameron.

Celestine and the Hare is another star of our children’s list. Originally an online community populated by mischievous felt animals, this series of books is filled with warmth and love, as well as fun craft activities for kids and grown-ups alike.

Landscape Wales is a sumptuous offering, filled with fabulous landscape photographs celebrating the beauty and drama of the outdoors. With twelve short essays by tourism expert Terry Stevens and contributions from a number of photographers, this book is a truly immersive experience.

Lost Lines is a series of four books by train expert Tom Ferris that take a look at four railway lines in Wales whose charm and beauty emanate from a bygone age. Filled with pictures from the heyday of steam, these little books contain detailed descriptions which will transport you to smoke-filled platforms up and down Wales.

Last but by no means least The Quiet Music of Gently Falling Snow is our first illustrated title by author, artist and illustrator Jackie Morris. This large and extremely beautiful book is a collection of musically-themed short stories and illustrations based around work Jackie has done over the years with the Help Musicians charity. An autumn title from Graffeg which is certainly not to be missed.

Shadows and Light book series by Nicola Davies £8.99

A girl who changes into a hare to evade a cruel lover; a fisherman who loses his bride to the sea; these short stories explore the deeper, darker side of our connection with the natural world.

The first two in a series of six illustrated short stories for teenagers and adults, which explore the supernatural world, inspired by ancient folk tales and a love of nature. Be ready to feel a little bit of magic, and perhaps a few shivers down the spine.

Nicola Davies Nicola is an award-winning author, whose many books for children include The Promise (Green Earth Book Award 2015, Greenaway Shortlist 2015), Tiny (AAAS Subaru Prize 2015), and A First Book of Nature. She graduated in zoology, studied whales and bats and then worked for the BBC Natural History Unit. Underlying all Nicola’s writing is the belief that a relationship with nature is essential to every human being, and that now, more than ever, we need to renew that relationship.

Upland by Andrew Fusek Peters £30.00

‘The country that lies between the dimpled lands of England and the gaunt purple steeps of Wales, half in Faery, half out of it.’ Mary Webb

The Long Mynd and the Stiperstones ridge make up the largest area of heathland in the Shropshire Hills. Cooks & Kids 3 £20.00

Detail from Six Views on the River Wye by Ralph W. Lucas

The Most Glorious Prospect considers the historic gardens of Wales as seen through the prism of the writings of contemporary travellers and tourists. Endlessly fascinating, intricately detailed and unexpectedly humorous, it relates how the great gardens were first made accessible to the polite world before being opened up to a wider, middle-class audience. The travellers’ diaries, letters and tours of Wales conjure up a lost world of gardens now largely vanished or altered beyond measure from their first construction.

A collection of paintings by William Wilkins CBE, one of Wales leading Fine Art exponents.

The work of William Wilkins is unique, both it the level of skill it displays and the length of time it occupies. Focusing upon the remarkable pointillist technique of the artist, this book represents the long and celebrated career of the artist together with the slow maturation of his style.

Born of months, even years, of painstaking creation each picture exudes both artistry and joy; a celebration of perception which merits exposure to the widest possible audience.

The pictures themselves are accessible both in terms of content and composition and will therefore appeal to a wide audience of art lovers.

“This book is simply an honest extension of the food Bryan serves at Tyddyn Llan: it is full of thoroughly delicious and beautifully executed food and there is not a single dish here which does not make complete and utter culinary sense. I urge every cook to buy this book, but even better, combine its purchase with a visit to Tyddyn Llan.” Bruce Poole, Chez Bruce, London
