SCHOLARSHIPS AND RESEARCH FACILITIES

Scholarships as teaching assistants are available to most Thai students. Most other scholarships include support for living, tuition fees and research expenses. Departmental staff receives a large number of research grants from national and international granting agencies. Part of this funding is also used as student scholarships. Scholarships for foreign students are usually available in a limited number. Information on scholarship opportunities is available from the Department.

RESEARCH FIELDS IMMUNOLOGY

Innate, innate-like and adaptive immunity are studied using multidisciplinary approaches at the molecular and cellular levels with cutting-edge technology. Their roles in human disease pathogenesis ranging from infectious diseases (mellioidosis, tuberculosis, dengue, malaria) to allergies are the main focuses. We are also involved in the development of vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics.

BACTERIOLOGY & MYCOLOGY The department has been involved in development of several

methods for genotyping M. tuberculosis and understanding the role of genetic diversity in pathogenesis; for example in autophagy. This work has recently involved whole genome sequencing and genome wide association studies in the host in collaboration with the University of Tokyo and the Ministry of Public Health.

Similar work is also being done for food pathogens, e.g. Salmonella, Vibrio and hospital acquired pathogens, e.g. MRSA and Acinetobacter. Studies of environmental microbes include studies of social amoeba and the gut microbiomes of wildlife.

VIROLOGY Pathogenesis of influenza viruses, including H5N1 and other

emerging viruses, are studied in our certified BSL-3 laboratory. The study of dengue virus pathogenesis and the development of new vaccine candidates are amongst other research focuses. Screening for anti-HIV activities of various compounds are routinely done.

PARASITOLOGY Development of molecular diagnostics, such as LAMP, and

molecular epidemiology of protozoa such as Plasmodium, Giardia, Leishmania, etc.

APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY Microbiology can be applied to many industries including the

food industry. Studies on the molecular biology of microbial enzymes as well as microbial secondary and bio-active metabolites are being applied in biotechnology and agriculture-related industries.

BIOINFORMATICS The emphases are on the analyses of microbial genome

sequences and microbial molecular evolution. A small server is available with the option of accessing faster ones outside university.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN MICROBIOLOGY Ph.D.(Microbiology)

Ph.D. graduates are trained to become independent scientists. Job opportunities range from academic to industrial (vaccine development, biotechnology companies, etc.) positions

Candidates should hold or expect to soon receive a University degree in the sciences, with a minimum GPA of 3.5 for Bachelor of Science and 3.25 for Master of Science. Exceptions to this can be made with a request to the Departmental graduate committee.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN MICROBIOLOGY M.Sc.(Microbiology)

M.Sc. graduates are trained to master a number of molecular and cellular technologies, together with acquiring an informed perspective on the importance of microbiology.

Candidates should hold or expect to soon receive a Bachelor of Science degree, particularly in life science or chemistry, with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Foreign candidates from countries with different scoring systems, please contact the Department.

ADMISSION Apply through the School of Graduate Studies, Mahidol University (http://www.grad.mahidol.ac.th).
