GRADUATION PROJECT
PHILOSOPHY
The PENNCREST Graduation Requirements Policy, indicates that students whoenter ninth grade beginning in the 1995-96 school term or thereafter are required to
complete a graduation project in accordance with the guidelines established by theadministration. The purpose of the graduation project is to allow the student to
demonstrate his/her ability to apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate information andcommunicate significant knowledge and understanding. This project shall be designed
and implemented by the student based upon an area of interest and/or concentrated study.This project may not be a reproduction of any prior or current assignment completed for
evaluation under the regular school curriculum. The project may be performance, object,model, or artwork that is not pre-existing. It is the responsibility of the student to
complete an individual graduation project in accordance with the requirements set forthin this document.
RATIONALE
The graduation project will provide all students with the opportunity to:
y demonstrate his/her skills in writing, speaking, research and organization in aculminating educational activity;
y integrate his/her various courses of study and interests outside the classroom;and
y demonstrate a sense of responsibility and a good work ethic.
GENERAL TIMELINE
The project will be completed in three phases during the 11th
and 12th
grade years.
The process will begin with an introductory meeting in the second semester of the 11th
grade year. During the second semester of 11th grade, the student will draft a proposalunder the guidance of a faculty Project Advisor. The completed project will be submitted
at the seventh meeting with the Project Advisor during the second grading period of the12
thgrade year. Any necessary remediation will occur during the second semester of the
12th
grade year. Projects will be presented at a public Graduation Project Night whichwill be attended by seniors and faculty. A more specific description of these steps will
occur in the PROCESS section.

FACULTY SUPERVISION
Each junior student will be randomly matched to a faculty member by theprincipal or designee prior to the first meeting with the students who are beginning
projects. The faculty member may be any professional staff member classroom
teacher, nurse, guidance counselor, or special education teacher.
The professional staff member is to be referred to as the Project Advisor and will
fulfill the following roles as the student completes the project:
1. Meet with the student a minimum of eight times during the project.2. Assist the student in maintaining the project packet (described hereafter).
3. Store the project packet.4. Supervise overall student progress with careful attention to the time
log/journal and checklist maintained by the student.5. Make suggestions as to where the student might find people with expertise in
the project area to serve as consultants.6. Serve as the evaluator of the final project.
Meetings between Project Advisors and students will occur twice each grading
period during the second semester of the junior year and the first semester of the senioryear in accordance with the procedure established by the administration.
Committee approval will be required for all projects. The committee members will
be the building administration, guidance personnel, and selected faculty members. Thiscommittee will meet in May of the junior year and October of the senior year to consider
projects for approval.
OUTCOME
A completed graduation project will consists of three components:
A. Project Documentation Packet
This should include all of the items specified for the type of project the student isdoing under the TYPES OF PROJECTS section. In addition, each packet should
include the eight project progress reports, the project proposal, the evaluation of theproposal, the evaluation tool, the self-evaluation and the outline for the oral
presentation.

B. Physical Product/Visual Media
The student will display the physical product at the Graduation Project Night. If thenature of the project precludes its being physically present at the Graduation
Projects Night, a video may be shown at that time. In addition to the physical
product, the student is also required to have a digital component for their oralpresentation.
C. Oral Presentation
The student will make the presentation at the Graduation Project Night.The oralpresentation will be graded by a panel of three teachers.
TYPES OF PROJECTS
Projects may be completed in any of the areas described below according to the
guidelines set forth:
A. Exploration of Potential Career Choices1. Minimum of 50 hours in the exploration of a potential career
a. Three (job shadowing) externships (minimum of 25 hours total)
b. At least one visit of up to five (5) hours to a post-secondary institutionwhich offers further education in this area
i. A written report to include a brief description of course workrequired, length of program and degree earned, and your response
to the visitationii. A statement signed by an official from the institution verifying
your visitationc. Experts signature of authenticity and validation of the project. The
expert must work in this area and must not be a relative.2. Documentation packet to include
a. Daily time logs, journal, or Career Exploration/School Visit formrepresenting a minimum of 50 hours
b. Journal describing process, reactions, response and other applicableinformation such as materials selected, rehearsals, etc.
c. A minimum of three interviews with professionals in this career field,including questions and answer summaries as well as the signatures of the
people interviewed. Relatives are not eligible interview subjects but maycertainly be consulted to make contacts within the career field. (Could be
completed during externships and post-secondary visits.)d. Survey of the career field including, but not limited to, number of
openings, expected salaries, benefits and drawbacks to the career,education required, and opportunities for professional development and

PROCESS AND PROCEDURES
A. Introductory PhaseAn introductory meeting will occur during the second semester of the 11th
grade year. The meeting will be conducted by the administrators and guidancepersonnel. The purpose of the meeting will be as follows:
1 Explain the project.2. Outline the expectations for the project.
3. Clarify the options available to the students in designing a project.4. Delineate any criteria for the selection of the project such as an area
of concentration/interest and design it to be creative in nature.5. Emphasize that this is an individual project.
6 Display completed project samples (which should remain on displayfollowing the meeting, if possible).
7. Provide students with an informational packet about the project.
The informational packet will contain these materials:
1. The philosophy and rationale of the Graduation Project2. The graduation requirements for PENNCREST School District
3. The project guidelines4. A description of the project, including process and procedures
5. The advisors name6. A parent letter of acknowledgment which must be signed and
returned7. Format for the daily time log/journal, the reflective/process journal,
the time-line, the project proposal, the evaluation checklist, the self-evaluation and the oral presentation outline.
B. Proposal Phase
This phase will formally begin in the second semester of the 11th grade year.
As of this time, the student will begin receiving a grade for the graduation projecton his/her report card so that progress may be reported to the parents. This grade
would be a percentage grade assigned each of the nine week grading periods.Four meetings which are detailed below will occur between the student and the
advisor during this phase. Each meeting should be recorded on a Project ProgressReport form (pp. 10-13) so that it is documented in the students file. At the end
of these meetings, the student will have completed a Project Proposal (format onp. 18) which will include a statement of outcome, the project purpose, the process,
the available resources, a description of the expected product, a listing of thematerials needed, the budget, a time-line for proposed activities and a listing of
potential problem areas. The Project Advisor will evaluate the proposal accordingto the Proposal Checklist (p. 19)

The meetings during the proposal phase should occur at the midpoint and at
the end of each nine weeks grading period making sure that the followinginformation is discussed at each session.

Meeting #1 (Midpoint of theT
hird Nine Weeks of Junior Year)
The student should bring the packet of information from the introductory
meeting and the signed parent letter. At this point, the student and the advisorwill go over the packet, focus specifically on the proposal process and brainstorm
ideas for possible topics.
2. Meeting #2 (End of the Third Nine weeks of Junior Year)The student should be prepared with a rough draft of the project proposal.
During this meeting, the advisor should consider the feasibility of the project and
help the student clarify the information contained within the proposal. If theproposal is not acceptable, the student needs to make arrangements with his/her
advisor to correct this.
3. Meeting #3 (Midpoint of the Fourth Nine Weeks of Junior Year)The final draft of the proposal for the project should be handed in at this
time.
4. Meeting #4 (End of the Fourth Nine Weeks of Junior Year)Every student should have a proposal approved by the Committee at the
end of the junior year. This meeting should consist of a dialogue of what the
student should be doing over the course of the summer. The discussion shouldfocus on arranging externships and any contacts needed for the completion of the
project. The student is required to submit a written plan for work to be completedduring the summer.
C. Project PhaseThis phase will formally begin the first semester of the 12th grade year.
Students are to meet with their advisors four times during this semester. These
meetings should include discussion of the items described below.
5. Meeting #5 (Beginning of the First Nine Weeks ofSenior Year)The student and the advisor should review the project proposal to ensure
that all the components are still valid. The advisor will make suggestions and

direct the student to continue work on his/her project at this point. This is thestudents final opportunity to receive Committee approval for any changes to the
project proposal. The student is required to submit documentation of 10completed hours.

irst Nine Weeks ofS
enior Year)
The student and the advisor should review the students progress to this
point and begin planning for the oral presentation. It is the expectation that theproject should be nearly completed by this stage. The student is required to
submit documentation of a minimum of 30 completed hours.
7. Meeting #7 (Midpoint of the Second Nine Weeks ofSenior Year)The project must be complete by now. A rough draft of the oral
presentation as well as the visual displays that the student plans to use should be
ready for the advisor to approve. The student is required to submit documentationof a minimum of 50 completed hours.
8. Meeting #8 (End of the Second Nine Weeks ofSenior Year)The project is due at this meeting, including the oral presentation outline.
If the project is not completed, the REMEDIATION section should be consulted.
D. RemediationIf the project is judged unsatisfactory, the student must complete an
Application for Remediation (p. 24) and submit it to a remediation committee that
consists of the principal, assistant principal, the advisor, and two other facultymembers. The committee may grant the student an opportunity for remediation
after it reviews the application. If the student is accepted for remediation, he/shewill present the project before the review committee. The students
parent/guardian will be encouraged to attend this presentation. Remediation willnot be granted unless two (2) criteria are satisfied. Students must have a minimum
of 25 hours and must present the incomplete project on graduation project night.Any student not completing this program and applying for remediation may be
ineligible to participate in graduation ceremonies as per administrative andremediation committee recommendation.

E. Graduation Project NightGraduation Project Night should be conducted in late January or February,
according to the schedule of the building. It is designed to provide a showcasefor senior projects to be presented publicly. Attendance at Graduation Project
Night will be a required part of the Senior Project for every student. Teacherswill also be required to attend. Students must attend for the duration of the
project evening. Students not in attendance for the entire evening must have
prior written approval from the principal.
The Graduation Project Night will be conducted with a trade showatmosphere whereby each student will display his/her project. Students will be
responsible to stay by their projects, answer questions that are asked of them, andmake a three to five minute oral presentation at the display site at a time
designated by the advisor. This presentation will follow the Oral PresentationOutline Format and be made to the Project Advisor and any other interested
parties. A panel including the Project Advisor and two other staff members will
evaluate the presentation component of the project.
F. ReflectionThe student will complete a reflection activity in their English class after
they have completed their presentation. The reflection activity will consist ofanswering 3 prompts pertaining to the Senior Project process:
1. Provide a synopsis of the positive and negative aspects of the seniorproject process.
2. Describe how the student has grown individually through the seniorproject process.
3. Reflect on the senior project presentation.
After the reflection is completed in the English class, it will be forwardedto the Project Advisor and the advisor will complete the graduation project rubric.
G. AssessmentThe project evaluation will be based on the rubrics for each of the eight
meetings; the Evaluation Checklist and the Graduation Project Rubric. Thisevaluation will be recorded each nine weeks as a percentage grade on the report
card.
The student must receive a passing grade in order to be eligible for
graduation. If the student passes the project but fails the 12th
grade, the projectneed not be repeated.
Students who move in during this process should be expected to complete
a project, but their requirements will fall under the principals discretion.
