RegistrationBefore collecting your gowns, you must register at the smaller Minerva Theatre, opposite theChichester Festival Theatre.

At Registration you will be given your theatre ticket with your seat row and numberdisplayed. The ticket will also state the time by which you must take your seat in the Theatre.If you are late you may not be admitted into the Theatre. Failure to register or lateness willresult in your name not being called at the ceremony and your certificate will be posted toyou by Academic Registry.

Programmes will be available as you enter the theatre and at the Graduation InformationPoint in the foyer of the main Theatre.

Car parkingThe University of Chichester regrets it cannot provide car parking for Graduands and theirguests. However, there are a number of car parks close to the Chichester Festival Theatre(where the ceremonies are held). A map of the public car parks in Chichester is providedwith your Graduation Pack. You are advised to leave plenty of time to find a parking space.

Car parking for people with disabilitiesLimited spaces will be available at the north end of the Northgate car park. Those withwalking difficulties may be dropped off by the Theatre foyer prior to the driver finding aparking space. Parking by the foyer is not permitted.

Academic dressWhen you have registered you can go to the robing area in the Steven Pimlott Building, nextto the Minerva Theatre to collect your academic gown. Present your robe hireacknowledgement form and theatre seat ticket. Having robed, please leave the Steven PimlottBuilding promptly to avoid congestion.

A specific description of the University of Chichester academic dress is on page 18. Thosereceiving MPhil or PhD degrees will wear the academic dress of the University ofSouthampton - see page 19.

Tips for wearing hood and mortarboardWe recommend you wear a shirt or blouse. The hood (or colours) is secured by a loop at the front, which will fasten onto a shirt orblouse button. This helps the hood to stay in place.

The mortarboards do come in a variety of sizes so it’s a good idea to bring some hairpins tosecure it firmly.

Returning gownsYou must return your robe after the Ceremony to the Steven Pimlott Building, unless youhave made prior arrangements to hire them for an extended period. The gown area will beopen until:

17.00hrs on Friday and 17.00hrs on Saturday.

Conferment ceremonyYour guests may take their seats as soon as the Theatre doors are open. All Graduands mustbe seated 20 minutes prior to the Ceremony and certainly no later than 15 minutes beforethe start time.

The Ceremony will begin with a formal procession of academic staff, followed by the platform party through the auditorium to the stage.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University will then formally open the Ceremony.

Your presentation

Presiding Officer: Derek Jenkins, Chair of Governors

At the appropriate time, the staff usher will conduct the Graduands in your course to thefoot of the stage. Go up on to the stage and shake hands with the Presiding Officer. Do notrush - take your time across the stage, be confident while you are on stage - and don’t forget,you are allowed to smile!

A member of the platform party will then hand you an envelope. You will go off the steps onthe opposite side of the stage, pass through the exit, go quietly through the foyer and return(via door 5 or 6) to your seat. In the foyer your envelope will be exchanged for your degreecertificate. Staff ushers will be on hand to explain the process when you are seated, beforethe ceremony. For the benefit of your course colleagues going across the stage, please remainquiet while you go through the foyer.

The Ceremony will last approximately 60 - 90 minutes and be brought to a formal close bythe Vice-Chancellor. The platform party will then process from the stage, followed by theacademic staff, graduands and, finally, guests.

Theatre regulations require that children must have an allocated seat. They are not permittedto sit on parents’ or relatives’ laps. For the enjoyment of the Ceremony by Graduands and forthe benefit of other guests, please ensure that small children remain in their seats.

If your guests include young babies, please advise the Graduation Team now so that we canensure they are near an exit.

RefreshmentsTea, coffee and other light refreshments will be available for purchase in the Foyer of theFestival Theatre and the Bar will also be open from 1100hrs each day.

PhotographsNorthams Photography will be in the Steven Pimlott Building for official portrait graduationphotos. An order form is contained in this Graduation Pack.
