JULY 2020 PAGE 1 “It was a difficult decision to make,” said UNOH President Dr. Jeffrey Jarvis about moving the graduation ceremony to a virtual format. “Hosting an in-person event, bringing students and families from multiple states and countries together to celebrate the wonderful accomplishments of college graduation in close quarters indoors, was simply not possible due to the coronavirus pandemic.” University administration looked at many different possibilities from postponing the event until the fall or holding the event outdoors and due to all the guidelines and restrictions in the state of Ohio surrounding mass gatherings, it simply wasn’t possible. With an in-person ceremony off the table, the centennial graduating class had to celebrate their graduation in a virtual way with the help of custom social media filters and a lot of behind the scenes work from the University’s Marketing Department. Congratulatory messages were collected from faculty and staff and parents and family members were also asked to submit well wishes to their future graduate. These messages were combined with a special greetings from President Jarvis and Provost Dr. Dean Hobler, commencement address from Monster Jam Driver Bryce Kenny, and introduction of graduates by UNOH family friend Michael Miller. Students who were planning to walk across the stage each submitted photos to the University and were announced one by one as the screen showed their name, degree, and any honors they received. During the ceremony, Jarvis remarked “Your class is a special one – marked by history like few others in UNOH’s 100 years – your parents, loved ones, friends and teachers are overwhelmed with pride in what you’ve done. Every commencement ceremony is bittersweet for those of us that have seen you, taught you, and supported you for the past year, or two, or four – you have all proven your strength and resilience and you will always be remembered for your fortitude and grace.” “Go out with confidence, knowing that you’re here for a reason and that you can make a difference in your future,” said commencement speaker Bryce Kenny. “What do you want your world to look like when you’re done with it? Somewhere someone out there is waiting on you to go out there and win in your career of choice.” Following the reading of the student names, dozens of family videos filled the screen with happiness, joy, and congratulatory messages telling their son, daughter, cousin, grandchild, or sibling how happy they were to see each student complete their college education. Even though it was a virtual ceremony, in some ways it felt more personal getting to see all the poignant messages from faculty, staff, and family members that are usually reserved for one-on-one conversations on graduation day. Rob Ison’s eureka moment came in the dead of winter when he was switching out a car fuel pump at a customer’s home. “It was so cold my breath had frozen my goatee and I bumped it on something and I looked down and saw a chunk of my beard had fallen off,” he remembers. It was 2012, and despite nine years as a mechanic in Columbus, Ison hadn’t been able to find a decent-paying job since he’d been downsized from a car dealership during the Great Recession. To make a living he was a mobile mechanic, fixing cars in driveways or on the street at people’s homes no matter the weather.“I thought, there’s got to be a better way,” says Ison, now 39. He decided to take his career – and his life – to a new level by enrolling in the high-performance automotive technology program at the University of Northwestern Ohio.

He says that’s where he gained the skills, drive and vision to snag a dream job as an engineering technician at the Transportation Research Center Inc. (TRC) in East Liberty, Ohio. TRC is North America’s largest, most advanced independent automotive testing facility and proving grounds, has been an acknowledged leader in transportation research and innovation since 1972. The facility

offers the world’s leading vehicle manufacturers, systems makers, and other transportation innovators a full range of engineering, research and testing capabilities as well as compliance and certification testing. Ison works at TRC’s SMARTCenter, where the world’s most creative automotive technology inventors test and evaluate their work on a 540 acres complex that include high-speed straightaways, intersections and cityscape roadway simulations. “This is as cutting edge as it gets,” says Ison. “Some days I might be working on equipment worth millions of dollars, helping engineers prepare and complete their tests and making sure they get good data. I’m working towards the future and the hours I put in are making sure we get good data to make people safer. I love the idea of that.” Although Ison can’t discuss specifics of what or whom he’s working with, he said the technology includes equipment for a variety of advanced driver assistance systems including self-driving vehicles. “You never know what we’ll be testing, what kind of new equipment I have to learn – it’s a technician’s dream,” Ison says. “I can’t imagine a better position or a better team to be on. It’s a close-knit group of like-minded people who work hard and strive for the same goals.”He credits UNOH with expanding his skills and giving him the confidence to be hired at TRC four years ago. “I wouldn’t be part of the most elite, advanced mobility group on earth if it wasn’t for UNOH,” he says. He said as he obtained his associate’s degree he gained a trouble-shooting skill set that has been repeated over and over again until it’s become muscle memory.

UNOH GRAD HELPING ADVANCE CARS OF THE FUTURE

“I learned how to break things down to the component level, a dissecting approach, where you’re working backwards and forwards,” he says. He says he has honed his diagnostic ability, which he calls his greatest asset, until it’s become a sixth sense.

Admittedly, working full time at an auto parts store and then driving 80 miles away (160 round trip) to take night classes at UNOH for three years wasn’t easy, Ison says. He also was taking care of his grandfather, Clay Ison, who raised him and who he lived with in Columbus. “He’s the person I draw my inspiration from,” he says. “He worked as a truck driver for Wonder Bread and he was just a guy who never stopped. Those are the shoes I’m trying to fill.”He was grateful that his grandfather, who died in 2019 at the age of 81, was able to see him graduate from UNOH and go to work at TRC.Ison hopes others will draw inspiration from his career journey.“You can’t be afraid of change,” he says. “You have to open that door. The only person that’s going to stop you is you. You have to figure out your goal and take a whole bunch of tiny steps that lead to something greater. I owe a lot to UNOH. They opened the door for me for sure.”

UNOH GRAD LOOKS BACK AT HIS TIME AT UNOH

October 5th, 2015 was my first day of school at UNOH. I remember being more nervous than ever before in my life. Would college be too difficult? Would I be able to make new friends being this far from home? Did I choose the right degree? These were just a few of the thoughts going through my mind. As soon at the instructor walked into my Electrical & Electronics 1 class, my nerves began to settle. I had a great time in class and even made a new friend on the first day. Having the small class sizes was amazing. The instructors made it feel like we had been friends forever. What I mean by this is, the instructors were not afraid to pick on you a little bit but were also there for you when you needed help. I know Mr. Marker will know exactly what I mean when I say that.

As time went on, I was able to join the UNOH Motorsports team and the RACER Leader student ambassador program. This is where my friendships really began to grow. My first year on the motorsports team I tried out as a driver and was selected to drive the #00 Thunder Stock. I was on the team for the 2016 Limaland season. After my first year on the team, a few of my friends and I, along with my family, decided to start racing in Ohio separately from the team. In 2018, we won the Limaland Thunder Stock championship. That is a night I will cherish for the rest of my life. As for the RACER Leaders, I am proud to say I am still a part of this group 4 years later. I have made so many friends from all over the world with the RACER Leaders. I also really enjoyed meeting all of the new students and getting to talk with faculty during open houses and orientations. One thing I will really miss about being a student ambassador is the RACER rock signing and group pictures while getting to talk with Todd and Georgia from marketing before they took our pictures. Through RACER Leaders, I was also able to build a relationship with both Deans of the University. I’m not sure that many other universities have Deans like Dean Fitzpatrick who would high five me walking down the hall whenever he saw me. Having a Dean be this personable and approachable, really makes students feel welcome.

In 2017, I joined the UNOH American Marketing Association. Within my first month, we traveled to New Orleans for an international business competition and we won the top small chapter in the world.

This is where I met Dr. Mann, the chair of the marketing department at UNOH. She has really helped me grow overall as a person and a professional. She pushed me to do the 2+2 bachelor’s degree after I graduated with my associate degree in high performance motorsports and automotive technologies.

On campus I wore many hats, so to speak. I was a student, a RACER Leader, president of the UNOH AMA club, and most recently I became a tutor. Being a tutor has been super rewarding for me. UNOH has helped me build a solid foundation for success and I am glad I may have been a small part of that for other students as well. I loved going into work every day. Everyone in the student success department is incredibly nice. My coworkers and I shared many smiles, laughs, and more great memories. It was a pleasure to have bosses like James Young- Nastally and Danielle McClure.

Well, here I am, it is now June, 2020 and I am graduating with my bachelor’s degree in business administration with a marketing concentration. UNOH and the UNOH AMA has provided me with so many professional opportunities that I would have never dreamed of. I am currently working for StarCom Racing, a NASCAR Cup team as a marketing assistant.

I am extremely grateful for all of my professors, instructors, and advisors I had along the way. While it is sad that I won’t be able to walk the stage with all of my friends for graduation, it means a lot that UNOH put on a virtual graduation. This last quarter of virtual classes was not how I expected to end my college career, but we all made that best of it. As a UNOH graduate, I have many opportunities after graduation, and I am looking forward to tackling whatever steps come next in my life. Before I finish up, I want to give a very emotional thank you to my family who, when I got homesick, traveled to Ohio every time to see me. I also want to say thank you to all of the great friends I made along the way and I will forever be cheering you all on in life.

To all of my fellow graduating students, I will wrap up with this quote from Suzanne Weyn, “Your life is an occasion. Rise to it.”

Like many colleges and universities around the country, the University of Northwestern Ohio transitioned from face-to-face, in person learning to a fully online environment following the guidelines and orders given by the Ohio Department of Health and Ohio Governor’s Office on March 10, 2020. This online learning environment has continued through the remainder of the spring and will continue through the summer terms. That being said, the University of Northwestern Ohio is fully committed to returning to a face-toface learning environment including on-campus housing and student activities in a responsible, safe, physically-distanced manner beginning with August Session on August 24, 2020 for students in the College of Applied Technologies and Fall Quarter on September 14 for students in all other colleges.Planning for this return to campus means UNOH will be taking the summer months to fully prepare every campus building, facility,

and dorm to comply with any and all guidelines given by Allen County Public Health, the Ohio Department of Health, the Ohio Governor’s Office, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. College campuses, including UNOH, pose unique challenges to physical distancing guidelines and University Administration will be doing everything possible to eliminate as much risk of exposure to our students, faculty, staff, and the greater Allen County community.“The talent and dedication it took from faculty and staff to transition a fully in-person hands-on university to a 100% online environment was exponential,” UNOH President, Dr. Jeffrey Jarvis, said. “While we are committed to resume on-campus operations in the fall, our administration is prepared to make adjustments if restrictions on in-person learning are again passed down from local, state, and federal agencies.”“It is of the utmost importance for students to return to campus in

a safe and responsible way. The college experience is not only about attending classes, but also about having that personal relationship with your professors and fellow students,” said Dr. Jarvis. “We are helping thousands of students from around the country and world turn their passions into careers, and much of that can only be done in a face-to-face environment.”As the summer continues, UNOH will be exploring all possible scenarios with guidance from federal, state, and Allen County Public Health officials that will emphasize safe and healthy operations with the understanding that the complete elimination of any risk is unlikely. These solutions mean there could be adjustments made to the academic calendar, the physical work environment, and the course delivery options. Regardless of the steps taken in the coming weeks and months, the University is remaining steadfast in its commitment to bringing students back to campus, ready to take on their coursework in person this fall.
