“Moving to Australia (which is on the other side of the world from my home in New York) has been challenging. Yet, because of Ormond, I have been able to become comfortable in Melbourne in record time. When classes seemed too difficult, Ormond’s fantastic tutors helped me find the right answer. When the responsibilities of law school left little time for simple life tasks, I knew I had great food and stimulating conversation waiting for me at meal times. Additionally, perhaps the most supportive element of my transition has been the other Ormondians themselves. I have never been a part of a community so engaged and engaging, so selfless and open, and so plainly…awesome. In just seven months, I have made personal connections that I know will last my lifetime.”

“Being a graduate at Ormond College every day has been a new adventure that was different from my life back at home.

At Ormond, there are incredible facilities and events that offer extra academic support while allowing me to pursue interests beyond academia. Professors, students, families, alumni and the greater community are all connected in many forms; it’s a community and a family. Ormond has given me the opportunity to meet a diverse range of people. I’m fostering intellectual challenges and cultivating life-long friendships. It’s a privilege to mix ideas and cultures with other high achievers and all-rounders.

Ormond has given me a new outlook on life and provided me with the opportunity to embrace ambiguity and explore possibilities for my future.”

Don’t just study – engage with your future profession

Ormond’s Learning Program allows graduate students to excel in their studies, develop their professional skills, explore ideas and skills outside their studies and network with leading alumni in their field. Our offerings change each year, as we work in partnership with students to pursue their passions and interests.

Academic programs Graduate academic programs are guided by the Associate Director – Academic Development. All Graduate students, including research students, can request academic assistance from the College, which might include tutorials, consultations, or guest speakers. As students are studying a variety of highly specific Graduate degrees, in most cases such assistance is tailored to the individual student’s needs.

Graduate mentor programs Four Coffees and a Dinner is our mentoring project connecting graduate and alumni volunteers. The program offers insights into careers pathways, professional directions and offers helpful support and advice for higher education studies. Graduate students and mentors meet for four coffees and a dinner to share invaluable insights.

Other programs Subject learning is underpinned by a rich program of visiting speakers and academics from across a wide variety of disciplines. Students can also present their work in an academic forum or publish it in the College’s annual academic journal, Ormond Papers. Professional engagement events allow students to forge links to our extensive alumni community and gain the inside track on the realities of professional practice.

The College has a long and proud tradition in legal and medical education, with many students going on to have distinguished careers in both professions. The College runs regular tutorials for students studying both medicine and law with a strong emphasis on personal learning. These small group tutorials are an opportunity to consolidate, broaden and deepen your understanding in a supportive and personal environment.

Graduate students are also involved in our ethics, Work of Work, and Beyond Ormond Borders programs.

“I’ve spent a year and a half at Ormond, and in that time it has had a significant positive impact on my life. As a new student at Unimelb and a grad, it can be hard to find community when many students in my course are older, studying part time and have commitments outside university that draw them away from student life. At Ormond I have a second family in my fellow grads, a group of intelligent and caring people that I draw support and inspiration from. I’ve also been lucky enough to be elected into a position of student leadership, something I’d never really had the urge to do before arriving at Ormond, and it’s been a steep but incredibly rewarding learning curve.”

Our online application form is available via our website. After forwarding supporting documentation to the College, you will be offered an interview. We expect that most graduate offers will be made in November and December, after the University makes its formal offers. In addition to our Semester 1 intake, a small number of places are usually available for students wishing to commence in Semester 2.

We select students based on their ability to get the most out of the all-round educational experience provided by the College. Therefore we look at your co-curricular interests, leadership potential and ability, as well as your academic results. The interview process enables you to talk about what you have done, what you value, and what you want to do with the opportunities that come from being at Ormond.

There is no deadline for graduate applications. However, the number of graduate places available at the College is strictly limited, so we recommend applying as early as possible.

Further detailed information about how to apply for a place at Ormond can be found on the Ormond website.

Fees & ChargesThe annual fee includes accommodation and utilities (gas, electricity and water), access to the learning programs, community counsellor and all campus facilities such as the music rooms, gym and library. Different meal plans and accommodation types have different rates. Information about fees can be found on our website:

www.ormond.unimelb.edu.au

There are additional initial charges including an enrolment fee, Graduate Orientation Week, a refundable room condition bond and a semester fee for internet usage. Printing and laundry are charged on usage basis.

Financial assistanceTo support the College’s value of diversity, we are committed to ensuring that – as far as possible – financial need is not an obstacle to membership of the College.

Thanks to alumni and other benefactors, Ormond’s endowment funds enable us to offer generous assistance to students who, for reasons of financial need, would not otherwise be able to enter or remain in College.

The combined value of scholarships, prizes and bursaries is over $1,000,000. Over a half of our graduate students receive some form of financial assistance. If you would like to attend Ormond, but feel that financial need may be a problem, you should apply.

The financial assistance application form is available online. We recommend applying at the same time as you apply for college.

How to apply

Applications can be made through www.colleges.unimelb.edu.au or through our website www.ormond.unimelb.edu.au

Ormond College welcomes applications from graduate students at the University of Melbourne, the Victorian College of the Arts and Melbourne Business School.

“Life at Ormond College can easily be the most rewarding and beneficial time in one’s life. I arrived as an undergraduate student and continue to live here. This experience has allowed me to grow both academically and socially. Ormond has provided me with a unique opportunity to network and learn from high-level Australian and global thinkers so I can expand my knowledge of social and economic issues.

Ormond fosters a culture of being accountable to individual histories, perspectives, and understandings. Having experienced a lot that Ormond has to offer, I highly recommend it.”
