WELCOME, new dancers to the wonderful world of square dancing! Your many hours spent in the classes will come to fruition with your graduation and joining in the club dances. With the help of experienced dancers in the clubs you should be able to make the transition to club level with very few problems.
And to the present club members - here is your supply of new life for the club, the enthusiastic new dancers; Make the most of it!
Again, to the new dancers - after getting your feet on the ground in your home club, do travel to the other clubs. You meet so many nice people when making these visits and you enjoy dancing to other callers. Having gotten into the swing of things with square dancing, another thought for the fall next year - take up round dancing by joining a basics class. Round dancing and square dancing complement each other nicely and each type is very enjoyable.
So dancers, new and experienced, have fun in these activities! We will see you out on the dance floor.

ESSEX RAMBLERS -- Verona, N.J. Wednesdays, 7-9 pm Essex County Bldgs - 900 Bloomfield ASP.
We represented the 4-H and teen square dancers by performing at the New York City Country Fair on December 29. Calling was our caller R. "Walt" Walter and the coordinator of s/d activities at the fair, Harry Lazar. A large and appreciative audience gathered to watch and some were willing to try square dancing. Later while waiting for the homebound bus, the Ramblers, weary and with aching feet, described the trip as "a real fun afternoon". secretary - Judi Knight
SHONGUM MOUNTAINEERS -- Morris Plains, N.J. Tuesdays, 7-9 pm County Bldgs, Hanover Avenue
We are enjoying Bob Mitchell's calling 1 & 3 Tuesdays. Our beginners are learning fast and are able to participate in more and more tips. The Corbishleys have been unfortunate and we've missed them on a number of occasions. Jack suffered a fractured collar bone which mit him out of wrestlinc zai.1 finJ telqs iL • ) and sister Nary is undergoing foot surgery. We enjoy having her with us between sessions at the hos-pital and look forward to her complete recovery and return to our group.
The new group from Sparta plan to visit with us in the near future and we look forward to entertaining them - maybe over the Easter vacation. Happy Easter to all. reporter - Heather Knight

LAMPLITERS -- Spotswood, N .J. 1 & 3 Sundays, 2-4pm American Legion Hall
Our club lessons are in operation now and we have about 5 squares of dancers. We need plenty of boys for dancing. Although we haven't been doing many demonstrations lately, our caller Jack Shoffner has called recently for the Spotswood Girl Scouts. Ye reporter is also learning to call. To bring you up-to-date on the Spinners doings, our "2 for 1" dance found 13 squares spinning to Al Aderente and our regular caller Bruce Vertun..our special thanks to all who travelled to the north country to support us....everyone attending had favorable comments! In February we had a Valentine Dance with Bruce and another "special" which Glen Cooke handled in his own unique way.
To add to all our dances from now on, we are including round dances which are cued by iviary & Joe Kuletz.
Coming up will be our graduation dance on April 7 at the Sparta Al-pine School from 8-11. All NEW GRADUATES are our invited guests! We are happy to say, at this writing we have six squares graduating with 14 couples having perfect attendance! The grads will join us for dancing throughout April and May and are especially looking forward to our special guest caller, SKIP SMITH on May 22nd ( see ad on page ).

SOMERSET HILLS SQUARES -- Basking Ridge, N.J. 2 & 4 Tuesdays Cedar Hill School Gym, Peachtree Road
Our Valentine Dance will be over when you read this, but we know our graduating class will have had a great introduction to club dancing. It will have been the first chance most of our club members have had to dance with the ten couples.
March holds many opportunities to dance. Besides our raid to Prince-ton Squares, Vin will hold a series of four workshops for our graduates any any club members who might want to re-orient themselves on some of those "tricky" movements. Don't forget, MARCH 31st, KEN BOWER NIGHT. All the Somerset Hills members have had this date in red letters for a year. Hope to see many of you at Cedar Hills School. There will be ample room for dancing.
April 26 will mark a first for Somerset Hills Club. We will sponsor a Sunday DOUBLEHEADER - an afternoon and evening of square dancing. Cedar Hill School is the spot, Vin Caruso and Al Aderente are the callers. Come for the afternoon and evening, bring your own box supper, or go "out" for supper. If time is your problem, come either afternoon or evening. Watch for our flyers!

HILL CITY SQUARES -- Summit, N.J. I & 3 Tuesdays Wilson School, Beekman Terrace
Our special dance with the double header calling of Manny Amor and Jim Cargill was enjoyed by a full house of dancers despite the changing weather. Their calling was of top hat caliber (as proved by the Uncle Sam Hats worn by the two) and was enthusiastically translated into square dance patterns by those present.
Cur class conducted by Dick Lighthipe graduated on February 9 after 20 lessons. An additional series of 5 workshops will be held by Dick on consecutive Mondays, starting February 16 at the same location in order to give the graduates and others an opportunity to work out any problems encountered at club dances.
Although spring may be just around the corner, there is still a lot of square dancing left this season with the first and third Tuesdays at Hill City being especially good times to have good fun dancing with Manny Amor. reporters - Jamie & Louise Jamison 201-635-5086
CIRCLE EIGHTS -- Tenafly, N.J. 2 Wednesday, 4 Friday Mackay School, Jefferson Avenue
During our regular caller absence, our guest callers were Dick Maddock. and Hal Holmes. No Friday dance in April. Our weekend in the Catskill Mountains will be on April 25th and 25th at Winter Clove. TENAKILL TWIRLERS -- Cresskill, N.J. 3rd Friday Bryan School, Brookside Avenue
As this goes to press, one of the high points of the season, the Fiddler's Dance to live music has just happened,„,and what a happening! When that Jimmie played his Orange Blossom Special - WN!!! Due to circumstances beyond our control (Bryan School simply won't hold any more) the dinner dance in March - or rather the dinner part must be restricted to members only - the dancing afterwards to Chip Hendrickson is open to one and all.
We are eagerly looking forward to the spring season when our classes will begin to dance with us. In April the Twilighters will graduate, followed in May by Doc & Al's class and culminating the grand finale in June when the BromberL::'s class becomes full members. Our May dance is our "Get to know the new dancers" with all new graduates welcome free of charge. Chip Hendrickson will be at the mike with the exception of June when we switch to second Friday with Hal Holmes calling.

CLOVERLEAFS -- Paramus, N.J. 1st Friday Bergen Mall Auditorium
Neither rain, snow, sleet or fog seems to keep square dancers from getting to a dance. We're glad so many have made it to ours. After all, a good crowd is just as important as a good caller. Judging from the smiling faces and happy chatter at the last dance with Al Aderente, everyone was having a great time. We were glad to have the Zeliffs with us that evening.
It doesn't seem possible that the season is nearly over. On April 3 we'll have Bob Paris; May 1 Dona Prudhopie; and on June 5 "Decko". Hope we'll see you all at all three. Rounds at 7:30 with the Tirrells -squares - 11. reporters - Ed & Eleanor Querbach 201-652-7315

If you like to hear different callers, come and join us on the 3rd Tuesday, March 17 for Glenn Cooke. On February 3rd Don Sewell led a dr; .;7 iwingin' Stars and Tenakill Twirlers (so many of us belong to several of the many great clubs in the area that at times, like characters in a modern play, we have trouble with our identities) to the Hill City Squares' Presidents Ball. And why do we Northerners always get lost down there? Hoffman and Boyle seems to be the jumping off place. From then on we go wandering off among, the hills and trees peering hopefully at ill lit and uninformative street signs -PLEASE, a GOOD map of the area!!! The dance was well worth the trouble -the hall was gay, the club members warm and friendly and the calling of Manny Amor and Jim, Cargill superb.
Manny will continue to call for us every 4th Saturday. On April 11, Jerry Schatzer of Poughkeepsie will be with us, so come and collect an-other signature for your centruy club - and have an evening of good dancing as well. Dick Jones will be back on May 9; May 23 will be the dance at which sweet girl graduates and their partners, are invited to be our guests. This dance is free to all new graduates - so come and dance with us "old timers". In an incredibly short time we'll all be old friends of yours.

f,1- 0 from HARRY LAZAR - Country Fair coordinator - "...I would like to extend my great appreciation through the Grand Square to the dancers of New Jersey...You played a significant part in the presentation of square dan-cing to the audiences during the nine days of the Fair The wholehearted cooperation and grand suirit you
k. displayed was heartwarming and showed the general pub- lic what square dancing is really like. The responses
from the audiences each day was so affirmative that I know we succeeded in gaining many new friends and most important - additional names for our classes Staten Square Set with its bus load of 5 sets which included one set of teens....Hix & Chix Essex Ramblers Tenakill Twirlers
.Tenakill Twilighters....Hi, Taw Twirlers Cornwall Square Dance Club......John Bruno with four' sets from Long Island.......Tri-City Squares....with callers Dick Maddocks, Tom Leiblein, Wait Walters, Jerry Schatzer, Erin O' Daly and round dance leaders John & Kay Adams and Doc & Peg Tirrell....all deserve special thanks for everything .....I was proud and thrilled to be a part of this series
from CROWD (Central Registry of World Dancers) Frar & Steve Stephens 151 Dryden Drive, San Antonio, Texas 78213 Overseas Square and Round Dancers 8th Reunion will be August 13-15 at Palm Beach Shores,Florida. To qualify as an "Overseas Dancer" you must have square or round danced outside of the continental limits of the US and Canada. Speak to the Pullmans who attended the last reunion - they heartily recommend it as a weekend well worth attending if you are down thataway. 12
With pleasure we dedicate this issue to the graduate - every year GRAND SQUARE publishes the names and addresses of the area graduates in the hope that clubs, as well as individuals, will use these listings to dsstle invitaLion J:or our graduates to come and join them. The older dancers must realize by now that square dancing is constantly plagued with the problem of drop-outs - here is your opportunity to help the newcomers bridge the gap from a nervous, bewildered graduate to be-coming a happy, helpful club member.
To the graduate - CONGRATULATIONS - now comes the fun! We strongly urge each and every one of you to get out and circulate among the many different clubs in our area and dance to our various callers. It is only thru active participation that you will reap the fun and friend-ships square dancing has to offer - whether here or all over the world.

HIX & CHIX -- Paramus, N.J. every Thursday Farview Avenue Firehouse
Now that the hubbub of finishing out the old year has passed, we are happy to announce that things have settled back into their normal place. Our "fun nights" are definitely that, and an especially good time was had by all at our Valentine's Party. In fact, we enjoyed the double fun of having two in a row; one Wednesday night for our beginners, who fell right into the spirit of things, and Thursday night for our regular club members. We extend our apologies to anyone who's diet we ruined with the prizes of candy. Plans are now in the works for a gala St. Patrick's party on March 12. We expect all the ladies to wear their "EHIN GO BRAGH" and our own Jim O'illammer to be in the (you should parson the expression) pink. Don't forget to reserve FrtIDAY, MAY 22 for Kip Garvey.

MERRI-EIGHTS -- East Brunswick, N.J. 1 & 3 Fridays Irwin School, Racetrack Road
We had a great time with BOB KELLOGG at our special dance in January. Hope he had it as good.
Our class of 18 couples is beginning to dance up a storm and we are looking forward to their Graduation Dance on April 3. We are also invit-ing all NEW GRADUATES to be our guests on Friday, April 17th at our regu-lar dance from 8:30 to 11 pm with refreshments afterwards, of course. The Special Events Committee is hard at work on these two affairs as well as our DINNER DANCE on SATURDAY, JUNE 20th, which will be held in the same place as last year, the Polish National Home in South River. So put that date on your calendar now, it's going to be bigger and better than ever. Happy dancing, everyone.

TENAFLY SQUARES -- Tenafly, N.J. 2 Friday Presbyterian Church, Magnolia Ave.
raMAPO SQUARES -- Oakland, N.J. 2 & 4 Saturdays Heights School, Seminole Avenue
Our new calendar year opened with a New Year's party with Jerry Salis- bury calling and the DePauws handlinF a fun-filled stunt session. Our January change over of officers has given us another fine group of lead- ers with Ed & Marge aimpo as Prexys; the Allisons, Veeps; Penneys, Secre- taries; and Frauenheims, Treasurers. Thanks for a most successful year are extended to the outgoing Presidents and Veeps, the DePauws and the Coughlins.
The St. Valentine's Day snow and icy roads had us fearful that many regulars and even the caller might not make it from Long Island. But surprisingly 13 sets of strong hearts arrived and frolicked thru a great evening to Jerry's enthusiastic calling and Doc & Peg's round dance cue- ing. Visitors from ten clubs were represented, from as far as Poughkeep- sie and L.I. The new committee, the Lutz's, Pope's and Prosnitz's did a great job with refreshments and decorations. Best wishes were extended to the Dummeyers who were presented with a Aamapo Plaque of appreciation for their fine contribution to Ramapo. Ernie & Erna are leaving for N. Carolina, but we all hope their camper will bring them back now and then.
During the 2 months absence of our regular instructor (pardner Hanley) Ramapo's class of six sets progressed beautifully under the able direc- tion of Bud Allison. Bud & Hanley will co-teach for the balance of the season up to graduation time, May 9. By now it is no secret that the Clapps will be taking off in mid-summer for permanent residence in Sara- sota Florida. Helen Hardy, in charge of club publicity will hereafter be our reporter.
Don't forget roundancers are invited to attend Rhythmaires on 1 & 3 Wed and 2 Thurs at tamapo Mt. Lakes Club House, Hiawatha Blvd., Oakland. And if you haven't enjoyed the great calling of Lee Kopman and Jerry Sal- isbury, come up and dance with us some 2 or 4 Saturday.
reporter - Vi Clapp 201-337-7578
The night of our January "Jack Frost" dance was indeed a frosty one, but everyone who dared the elements had an enjoyable evening to the cal- ling of Dick Maddocks. For our Valentine Dance, Bob Gray gave us a lively evening. Doc Tirrell cued rounds at both dances.
On April 10th, we plan to welcome members of local beginners classes to get a taste of club-level square dancing at our Spring Festival. We always try to maintain a fun-level of dancing for a relaxed evening, so the beginners should be able to enjoy themselves at this dance. Do try to come. reporters - Frank & Marie Poole 201-342-3375 24

2 & 4 Saturdays Methodist Church, Walnut & Lincoln Streets
Beulah Samec called a great dance for us in the absence of Glenn Cooke. We had a great turnout - a big THANK YOU to all who made the evening so enjoyable. Many clubs were represented. Unfortunately when we visited Hill City in February we were a couple short for pinning their banner, but those who went sure had a ball dancing to Manny and Jim. On Lincoln's birthday we traveled to Asbury Park to dance with the Cali-Hoes and retook our banner which they had stolen. With the coming of Spring we plan to do more visiting.
On April 11 Al il.udrente calls for us; April 25 Glenn Cooke; May 9 viii be Charlie Kides - quite.a variety of callers lined up. Come and have a night of enjoyable dancing. Don't forget we have Bob & Lynn Long on rounds starting at 7:30; squares start at 8:30; coffee and at 11pm.
A big thanks to Harry & Helen Bork, presidents, who are doing a fine job running the club. You are always WELCOME, come dance with us.

We're still glowing about the great cooperative dance we had with the Sussex Spinners in January where we double featured our own caller, Al Aderente and the Spinners' Bruce Vertun. Over twelve squares attended.
Glen Cook is our guest caller for our dance on _March 13. Our beginners class, taught by .uth Simon at the Boonton High School is looking forward to graduation very soon. (ED. NOTE- first time we've 'ever heard mention of this class - We strongly urge clubs to let others know about classes; how else can we send folks your way!) reporters - Paul & Myra Jones 201-992-359

GRAND PROWLERS -- Whippany, N.J. 1 & 3 Saturdays Memorial School, Highland Ave.
We take five this month to express our sympathies to Mildred Davies on the sudden death of Homer, who suffered a heart attack in Jackson, Tennessee where they moved last year, after many years as members and officers of Grand Prowlers.
We shall be back on the floor dancing to the calling of Wes Wood from Syracuse on April 18 and to Bob Mitchell, our regular caller, on April 4 and May 16. Our big special of the year is May 2, with Frank Lane from Estes Park, Colorado, calling at West Essex High School in Caldwell.
Presidents Ed & Gwen Knight are seeking adventures of a different kind in the extreme north of Scotland in early May - real sorry to miss Frank Lane, but this was an opportunity which couldn't be missed.
Our beginners' class which started in September, fell apart after a few weeks, but we are now off and running with a new class of three sets at the Shore Hills Country Club in Landing with Bob Mitchell handling the instruction. Graduation looks like a summer event - perhaps in time for our August picnic, dance and camp at Egberts Lake in Marcella.

CALI-HOE SQUARE DANCE CLUB 2 & 4 Thursday
Asbury Park, N.J. Hayloft - 901 First Avenue
(ED note - lost in the mail, but their secretary did her best to fill us in by phone) Tony Osage and Joe Goodspeed attended the delegates meeting in January and have been busy relaying information back to the club members, as well as distributing the Constitutions, GRAND SQUARES and signing up boosters. We were thrilled when a bunch from Country Promenaders attended our Valentine's Dance. Four squares of Cali-hoes went north to Merri-Eights one Friday and danced to Beulah Samec. It has been a pleasure to welcome so many dancers from other areas. We had a pre graduation party and lesson with the real whing ding set up for March 21 when the graduates will receive their diplomas. Oh! Al Brundage is our special guest caller on April 4th. Workshops are set for Wednesdays April thru September for recent graduates, or folks who want some review.

New friendships and an exchange of ideas are two direct results of club visitations. In our wanderings we've noticed some well attended clubs and some with only a few sets. It leads one to ponder - WHY? Most of the clubs with an active Beginner Program do not seem to have this problem of poor attendance.
Methods of welcoming and helping new graduates become club dancers vary. Remember - first impressions are itportant - the new dancer who comes into your club and is made welcome and comfor- table is very apt to return. Here again - study the more successful clubs - those who KEEP their vast majority of graduates. How do they do it? Try a little research and work on this problem if your club is beset with poor attendance. And don't say it can't be done - one of the most happy and successful clubs of today was once down to 3 couples and no caller - and a couple others are now making serious efforts at rebuilding.
Due to circumstances - some of the southern area news never did reach ye editor's desk - thank heavens for tele-
• phones! Next deadline to the editor is the delegates meeting - April 19. This issue will feature summer dancing and
include a listing of all summer dancing possibilities. So if your club is planning any summer dancing - get it in. For advertising rates, contact the Maddocks.
