PhD Program Timeline

When the course requirements are completed with a minimum GPA of 2.75/4.00,the student is allowed to write a qualification exam.

The qualification exam has two parts and is explained in detail below.  After successful completion of the qualification exam, a thesis progress committee

(TPC) is formed (TİK: tez izleme komitesi) and the student is required to prepar e athesis proposal and defend it before TPC in 6 months.

If the thesis proposal is approved by the TPC, the student registers for MMÜ 700 – Special Topics course and the progress of the student is followed by the TPC byformal meetings held at the end of each semester.

Information on PhD Qualification Exam

The qualification exam has two parts. The first part (administered by the Department ofMechanical Engineering) is a general written exam (3 hours) covering the topics ofundergraduate curriculum. Each student selects one of the following four fields for thegeneral exam and receives 5 equally weighted questions from each topic listed under thatfield:

A. Thermal-Fluids Systems and EnergyMathematics (Analytical and Numerical)ThermodynamicsHeat TransferFluid Mechanics Any course from fields B, C and D except Mathematics.

B. Dynamics, Control and MechatronicsMathematics (Analytical and Numerical)System Dynamics and ControlDynamicsTheory of Machines Any course from fields A, C and D except Mathematics.

C. Solid Mechanics and DesignMathematics (Analytical and Numerical)

StaticsMechanics of MaterialsMachine Design Any course from fields A, B and D except Mathematics and Mechanics of Materials.

D. Materials and ManufacturingMathematics (Analytical and Numerical)Materials ScienceManufacturingMechanics of Materials Any course from fields A, B and C except Mathematic and Mechanics of Materials.

10

The student must receive a minimum of 60/100  to advance to the 2nd  part of thequalification process. The general exams are held twice a year. If a student fails thegeneral exam twice, he/she will be required to take 3 undergraduate courses and pass allof them with a minimum grade of B3 before he/she is allowed to take the exam for the thirdtime.

In the 2nd

part, a formal qualification exam committee is formed and the committeeadministers a written and an oral exam according to the regulations of Graduate School ofScience and Engineering (Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü).

Journal Paper Requirement for Thesis Defense According to the departmental regulation, each doctoral candidate must have a paper(from his/her thesis work) published or accepted with minor revision by a SCI-Expanded journal before defending his/her thesis.

4. Seminar Course (MMÜ 698/MMÜ 799)

Students must present a formal seminar that is open to public. The seminar content shouldbe relevant to the thesis/dissertation topic of a student, therefore the seminar coursecannot be undertaken before the approval of thesis/dissertation proposal. A seminar

presentation must demonstrate the progress in student’s research, for that reason it needsto be carried out only after substantial amount of research work has been done.Registered students must attend at least 70% of the presentations, otherwise they will failbased on attendance. Students are expected to follow the seminar preparation guidelineswhen preparing their presentation.

5. Thesis Proposal and Special Topics Courses (MMÜ 605/MMÜ 700)

MS degree program students can submit their thesis proposal as early as their 2nd semester in the program. PhD degree students can submit their proposal only after thesuccessful completion of qualifying requirements. Both MS and PhD students can registerfor Special Topics course offered by their thesis supervisor after the approval of theirproposal by the Graduate School of Science and Engineering. The special topics coursemust be taken every term until the thesis defense.

Scientific Preparation Program

Students with an undergraduate degree different from the Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering departments are required to complete the scientific preparationprogram. Courses need to be undertaken are decided by the Departmental Academic

Board and then the Graduate School of Science and Engineering are informed with thesecourseload that the student needs to complete. Scientific Preparation Program consists ofat most 5 courses, which are 2nd and 3rd year core courses of the department as below:

MMÜ 203 StaticsMMÜ 204 DynamicsMMÜ 205 Thermodynamics IMMÜ 208 Mechanics of MaterialsMMÜ 209 Materials ScienceMMÜ 214 Manufacturing EngineeringOMÜ 332 Vehicle Component DesignMMÜ 305 Fluid MechanicsMMÜ 307 Design of Machine ElementsMMÜ 306 Heat TransferMMÜ 309 Theory of MachinesMMÜ 324 System Dynamics and ControlMMÜ 340 Mechanical Vibrations

Students in Scientific Preparation Program must complete the selected undergraduatelevel courses in addition to the courses required by the degree program. Theseundergraduate courses will be automatically assigned to the students and there is no need

for petition regarding this issue.

MMÜ 698SEMINAR PREPARATION GUIDELINES

General:

Each graduate student must prepare an abstract about his/her thesis proposal and send

this abstract to the seminar coordinator one week before the seminar lecture.  Abstract should not exceed 500 words. In this document, the title, objective and scope of

the thesis should be given. The method that you would like to use and the aim that youwould like to reach during your thesis studies should be clearly presented. You can addfigures and graphics that can draw attention of the prospective audience.

The duration for seminar presentation is 20 minutes.

Time allowed for questions and discussion after the presentation is 10 minutes.

Presentation with an average number of 20-25 slides is advised to be prepared. (It can varyaccording to the content)

Content:

1st  Slide:  Include the title of the study, name and surname of the student and theadvisor/supervisor.

2nd Slide: Provide the content of the Seminar (“Table of Contents or Outline”)

Introduction: Information about the thesis problem, literature survey, purpose and scopeshould be given. Your literature review must be mainly based on information from theScience Citation Index journals.

Method: Theory and/or experimental methods should be explained.

Results:  If there are, the results of the preliminary studies should be given. The

experiment and/or simulation results should be presented in this section in graphical andtable format.

General Results:  The fundamental results of the studies should be presented in thissection.

Further studies: Future studies should be summarized.

References: The list of the references should be given in this section.

Format:

Give single idea/info about your work in each slide and avoid giving unnecessary

information.  Be careful in using 6-8 lines in each slide and 6-8 words in each line. DO NOT FILL UP

THE SLIDE WITH PARAGRAPHS OF WRITTEN INFORMATION.

Try to use figures and graphics to present your work and ideas in your slides.

Use few and clear sentences and keywords in the slides.

Chose different colors for the text and for the background of the slides.

Make the designs of the slides identical.

Use at least font size 20 for the text.

Do not use more than one graphic in a slide.

Make the graphics and figures clear. MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE CLEARLY VISIBLE

FROM THE BACK OF THE ROOM.

Page 15: Graduate Program Guide Hacettepe

14

Avoid using many equations in your slides.

During the presentation:

Spend at least one minute for a slide.

Make eye contact with the audience.

Adjust your voice tone and present clearly.  Don’t directly read the text from the slide during the presentation.

Don’t block the slides during presentation.

  USE A LASER POINTER.

Inform the audience when you start a new section (you can use the content slide as aseparator for each section)

DO NOT EXCEED THE ALLOCATED TIME.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!
