Title:
Use of lime With OPC in SCCS with Bagasse
Ash and marble powder.
Brief:
Self Compacting Cementitious Systems (SCCS)
fall in the category of modern concrete
technology which has been used effectively all
over the world. Such systems offer uniform
compaction as well as have uniform durability
and are characterized by higher powder content
with lower w/p ratio compared with the
conventional concrete.
Effect of Marble powder, lime and Bagasse Ash,
on Self Compacting Cementitious System
(SCCS) was studied. This would encourage
effective use of recycled industrial waste like
inert marble powder, resulting in more
economical and self compacting concrete
placements.

Title:
Development of a Framework of Actuated
Signalized Intersection and its Implementation
on an Existing Intersection.
Brief:
The two foci of traffic engineering are safety
and efficiency of traffic flow. Traffic signals
control the competing flows of traffic thus
improving safety as well as efficiency of traffic
progression. Traffic efficiency problems are
increasingly being addressed by Intelligent
Transportation Systems (ITS) often in conjecture
with others engineering disciplines such as
computer engineering and electrical engineering.
The actuated signal controllers are one of the
many components of an ITS. Actuated signal
controllers are demand driven, and can
change/skip phases before they reach their time
limits.
This project is focused on improvement of
traffic flow conditions at an intersection through
the application of actuated signals instead of
conventional pre-timed signals. The most
common vehicle detectors are the Inductive
Loop Detectors, however, this project has also
considered the merits of a new and economical
sensor i.e. Magnetometer. Along with a detailed
framework this project demonstrates a complete
control and monitoring software of the ITS for a
Metropolitan city

Title:
Traffic Signal Coordination: Improving Mobility
on Urban Arterial using Traffic Signal System
Coordination.
Brief:
Objective of our project is to increase efficiency
of through traffic from Qasim Market
Intersection to P.C.Hotel Intersection. This can
be done either by coordinating traffic signal
timings or by suggesting a traffic management
plan. We conducted site surveys and collected
data of traffic volumes, signal timings, travel
times through this corridor and measured
geometry of intersections.
This data is then used to model the corridor on
SYNCHRO (traffic analysis software). Level of
service and approach delays are calculated using
this software. Signal timings are optimized and
coordinated with each other and then travel
times through this corridor are observed with
these improved timings. Then, this plan is
compared with a different traffic management
plan and cost benefit analysis is done.
Environmental and economic impacts of these
plans are compared and a better proposal is then
selected.
For simulation we are using SimTraffic and
VisSIM. Through these plans, travel times as
well as fuel consumption through this corridor
will reduce.

Evaluation of Aggregates Properties for HMA
Pavement Construction in Pakistan using
Aggregate from Dina Quarry.
Brief:
The purpose of this project is to see the
performance of Dina quarries as potential
aggregates for pavement construction. For this
purpose the Dina aggregate properties are
compared with the Margalla aggregates which
are most extensively use in pavement
construction. The aggregate properties like
specific gravity, water absorption, los angles
abrasion, soundness, shape, crushing and impact
value conform to the required pavement
standards. The asphalt mixture design make with
the Dina aggregate by Marshall method also
shows suitable performance. These laboratory
testing indicates that Dina quarries are potential
aggregates for pavement construction in the
Punjab province.

Traffic Studies to Evaluate the Saturation Flow
Rates: A case study of an Urban & Intersection
of Rawalpindi.
Brief
Saturation flow rates are used for signal
designing; they give an idea of intersection
capacity. Currently Pakistan is using American
saturation flow rate values. The traffic
conditions in America are quite different from
Pakistan’s and may not give efficient results.
We are attempting to calculate our own values
and compare them with that of America’s. For
the process we are analyzing traffic flow
through intersections of 9th avenue Islamabad
and Sadar Rawalpindi.

Hydropower Potential at a Selected Canal Fall
Site
Brief:
The reliable source of energy is considered to be
the engine for the economic growth. The
availability of cheap and sufficient energy is a
basic economic need and an engine for the
advancement of society. The production cost of
the thermal power, due to escalation in oil and
gas prices is much higher than hydel power.
Therefore keeping in view the importance of
hydel power, through data analysis an effort has
been done to identify the hydel power potential
at irrigation channel of Khanpur Dam. Khanpur
Dam is located on the Haro River near Potowar
Plateau and the village of Khanpur, Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, about 25 miles (40 km)
from Islamabad, Pakistan. It caters to domestic
water supplies in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, and
irrigation water to many of the agricultural and
industrial areas surrounding the cities.

Rainwater Harvesting.
Brief:
Water’s safe and continuous supply lies in proper
management and proper use. Our aim was
towork on a project which will offer a great deal
of objectivity. We wanted to work on a more
tangible project, a project which offers water
security to a common household. After careful
analysis and meticulous research we came across
Rain water Harvesting (RWH). RWH
phenomenon provided us with an opportunity to
study it in the backdrop of the prevailing water
shortage, which has engulfed Islamabad and the
surrounding areas. With the population on
constant rise and unabated urbanization, water
shortages are only going to exacerbate until and
unless innovation is allowed to take its course.
The project covers the
1) Study of Rainfall trends of the region
(Pakistan Islamabad).
2) Calculation of water requirements.
3) Designing of water storage tanks.

4)Some filtration and/or disinfection
mechanism.
5) Recirculation Plan for filtered water
6) Linking the storage tanks.
7) Tests to check the water quality
8) Studying the strata for Ground water
recharge.
9) Designing some infiltration mechanism like
pits.
We plan to practically install the Roof top RWH
system at NICE. All the preliminary study has
been done and the preliminary design has been
worked out however final design and the
subsequent integration with the NICE water
supply system will be materialized once pilot
design is installed and the quality of water in
terms of chemical, physical and biological
properties is verified through sample testing to
be within WHO and Pak EPA standards. The
benefits that we anticipate are manifold ranging
from conserving the ground water aquifer to
conserving the energy through Roof Top Rain
water harvesting and reuse of Grey
watersubsequently developing a sustainable
integrated water management system within the
buildings.
