Alaboratorysafetyworkshopisofferedduringorientationweekforincominggraduatestudentsandadditionallabsafetyworkshopsorseminarsmaybeofferedduringtheyearbyspecialarrangement.Duringwinterterm,allfirstyeargraduatestudentsarerequiredtoregisterfortheone-credithourseminarclassCH607(Section010;'ChemicalSafetySeminar').FurtherdetailsforthisclasscanbefoundonSafetyWeb.4.3.Insurance
GTAsandGRAsand studentsonhourlywages are coveredby the StateAccident InsuranceFund(SAIF)whileinvolvedinOSUwork.ThisinsurancecoversyouwhileworkingoncampusandifyouareoffcampusonOSUbusinessinstatevehicles.Thecoverageincludesmedicalcareforjob-relatedaccidents.Incaseofdeath,therearecertainbenefitstosurvivors.Thisinsurancedoesnotcovernon-work-relatedaccidentsorillnesses.StudentsnotontheOSUpayrollarenotcoveredbySAIF.Thismeansthatanysuchstudentinjuredinanylaboratory,statevehicle,researchvessel,etc.,generallyhasnorecoursetostateinsurance.All GTAs and GRAs are required to have health insurance. PacificSource Insurance is the OSUprovider,andofferscomprehensivemedical,dentalandvisionplans.AllGTAsandGRAsmusteitherenroll in PacificSource or provide proof of comparable coverage. OSU pays 89% of the graduatestudent’s and dependents' monthly premiums and 50% of administration fees. The remainingpremiumcostswillbededucteddirectlyfromyourpaycheck.Ifyouhaveabreakinservice,youmaybeabletocontinuehealthinsurancewitheitherGraduateAssistantSummerInsuranceortheCOBRAContinuationPlan.

The department, college, and OSU have numerousscholarshipsandfellowshipsfordeservingstudents.GraduateTeachingAssistantship(GTA)GTAsteachintroductoryundergraduatecoursesorassistfacultyinthedeliveryofupperdivisionandgraduatecourses.WhilethedutiesofaGTAwillvary,youcanexpecttoberesponsibleforoneormoreofthefollowing.
• Teachingorassistingwithoneormoresectionsofacourse.• Runninglaboratorysessions.• Gradingundergraduatestudentpapersandexams.• Holdingregularofficehoursandmeetingwithstudents.• Conductingstudyandreviewsessions.
These tasks require mastery of the course content and also improve communication skills. Forstudents planning a career in academia, a GTA position provides excellent training on pedagogy,lessonplanning,andclassroomculture.

GTAsshouldpickuprequiredtextbooksforinstructionalassignmentsforfreeintheChemistryOffice.The textbooks must be returned at the end of each term. GTAs often need to make copies ofassignmentsandlabmaterialsfortheirinstructionalduties.SeeinformationaboveonMakingCopies.NewTAsshouldregisterfor1creditofCH607-5(TeachingSeminar)theirfirstquarteratOSU.TheCenter for Teaching and Learning (CTL), http://oregonstate.edu/ctl/ provides resources for newGTAsandallothers involvedin instructionalactivities.CTLsupportsteachingandlearning intheacademic curriculum and learning in co-curricular settings. Their services include individualconsultations, workshops and seminars, coordinating learning communities, and studentorientations. 5.2.TaxesSalariespaidtograduateassistantsaretaxableincome.However,thetuitionremissionaccompanyingagraduateassistantshipisnottaxableincome.Scholarshipsandfellowshipincomesarealsotaxableon the portion not spent for tuition or course-required educational supplies and fees. WhencompletingaWithholdingAllowanceCertificate(IRSW4form),besuretohaveasufficientamountwithheld from your monthly check to match your tax liability. There may be IRS penalties forinsufficienttaxwithholding.Internationalstudentsshouldkeepcarefulrecords;mostnon-residentalienscannottakethestandardincometaxdeductionandareallowedonlyoneexemptionandactualitemizeddeductions.TaxationagreementsbetweentheUSandcertainforeigncountriesmayresultindifferenttaxrequirements.MoreinformationonthismaybeavailableviatheInternationalStudentAdvisingandServices(ISAS):

5.3.Travel
Participation at professionalmeetings can be one of the best professional development activitiesduring your graduate studies. You can present your research results to a broader audience, gainvaluablefeedback,networkwithscholarsinyourdiscipline(s),andpolishyourpublicspeakingskillsandconfidence.

5.4.TenureofSupportStudentstypicallyrequire2-3yearsfortheMSdegreeand4-6yearsforthePhDdegree.TheDepartmentdoesnottypicallyofferfinancialsupportforMSstudents-thisincludesstudentswhochangefromPhDintotheMSprogram.Thedepartmentwillnotnormallyprovidefinancialsupportbeyondthe6thyearofaPhDprogram.Afterthe6thyearinaPhDprogram,requestsforsupportcanonlybeconsideredonaterm-by-termbasis.FinancialsupportiscontingentoncontinuedsatisfactoryprogresstowardsthedegreeandissubjecttotheavailabilityoffinancialresourcesoftheDepartment(GTA)and/oradvisor(GRA).
5.5.CoalitionofGraduateEmployees(CGE)CGEisalocal,member-runlaborunionrecognizedbyOSUandtheStateofOregonastheexclusiverepresentative forOSU graduate assistants on allmatters involvingwages, benefits, andworkingconditions. CGE is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). All OSU graduatestudentsareeligibletojoinCGE.AllCGEmembershaveaccesstovariousdiscountsandinsuranceprovided through AFT. CGE offers two levels of membership. Associate membership is optional.MembershipformsareavailablebycontactingCGE.TheemploymentrightsandbenefitsofgraduateassistantsarecontainedinacontractCGEnegotiateswithOSU.6.INTERNATIONALSTUDENTSAdditionalconditionsandregulationsgovernyourstayintheU.S.ifyouarehereonanon-immigrantstudentvisa(F-1orJ-1visa).Itisimportanttofollowtheseconditionsandregulations;failuretodosomayhaveseriousconsequences.Aslongasyoufollowalloftheregulationsandmeetalloftheconditions during your stay, your immigration status remains in effect. 8.ACADEMICREGULATIONS
8.1.Registration TheOSUScheduleofClassesisavailableonlineandcontainsacademicregulationsandregistrationproceduresthatapplytoallstudentsintheuniversity,aswellasthefinalexaminationweekschedule.Theonlinecatalogisthesourceforup-to-datechangesforthecurrentandimmediatelyupcomingterm.Itisyourresponsibilitytoregisterfortheappropriatenumberofcreditsthatmayberequiredfor any funding eligibility and/or to meet the requirements of the continuous enrollmentpolicy.Problems arising from registration procedures, such as late registration, adding orwithdrawingfromcoursesafterdeadlines,orlatechangesfromletterorS/UgradingareresolvedthroughthepetitionforlatechangeinregistrationfiledwiththeGraduateSchool.Alateregistrationfeemaybeapplied.Studentsareresponsibleforstayingcurrentonregistrationrequirementsthatmay supersede the Graduate School requirements (i.e., international, financial aid, veteran’s).Internationalstudentswhoareconcernedwithregulationssurroundingregistrationshouldalsoseethe“InternationalStudents”sectiononp.9.RegistrationrequirementsforgraduatestudentsareestablishedbytheRegistrarandtheGraduateSchool.“Full-time”statusmeansyouhaveregisteredfor9–16creditsinaterm;“part-time”statusmeans you have registered for less than 9 credits in a term. ForregularacademicyeartermswhereyouareappointedasaGTAorGRA,youmustregisterforatleast12credits(SummerTermregistrationdependsonyoursituation,typicallybetween3-6creditsare required, guidance will be offered during spring). This requirement includes internationalstudents.Degree-seekingstudentsmustregisterforatleast3creditsineverytermtheyenrollatOSU.Studentsmustbeenrolled(andthusregisteredforatleast3credits)duringthetermoftheirthesisdefense.ContacttheGraduateSchoolifyoumaywishtoscheduleathesisdefenseduringatermbreaktoavoidpayingtuitionforanadditionalterm.8.2.ContinuousEnrollmentAllgraduatestudentsenrolledinadegreeprogrammustregistercontinuouslyforaminimumof3graduate creditseach term(fall,winter, andspring terms)until alldegree requirementsaremet,regardless of student’s location. Students on approved leave are exempt from the continuousenrollment policy for the term(s) they are on leave. Graduate students who use facilities orfaculty/stafftimeduringsummersessionarerequiredtoregisterforaminimumof3creditsduringthesummersession.Studentsdefendinginthesummertermarerequiredtoregisterforaminimumof3graduatecredits.Studentsmayappealtheprovisionsofthecontinuousgraduateenrollmentpolicy ifextraordinarycircumstancesarisebysubmittingadetailedrequestinwritingtotheDeanoftheGraduateSchool.Schedulingdifficultiesrelatedtothepreliminaryoralexamorthefinaloralexamarenotconsideredanextraordinarycircumstance.Graduateassistantshipeligibilityrequiresenrollmentlevelsthatsupersedethosecontainedinthiscontinuous enrollment policy. 8.4.UnauthorizedBreakinRegistrationDegree seeking graduate students who take an unauthorized break in registration relinquishgraduatestandingattheUniversity.Tohavegraduatestandingreinstatedafteranunauthorizedbreak,studentsarerequiredtoreapplytotheirprogram(completetheonlinegraduateadmissionapplication,paytheapplicationfee,andmay be required to register for three graduate credits for each term of unauthorized break inregistration).Itisadvisablethatstudentsinthissituationstatethattheyareapplyingforreadmissionintheapplicationpacket.Areapplicationdoesnotensureadmittancetotheprogram.

8.6.GradeRequirements
Agrade-pointaverageof3.00isrequired:1)forallcoursestakenasadegree-seekinggraduatestudent,and2)forcoursesincludedinthegraduatedegreeorgraduatecertificateprogramofstudy.ThegraduateschoolspecifiesthatgradesbelowC(2.00)cannotbeusedonagraduateprogramofstudy.Agrade-pointaverageof3.00isrequiredbeforethefinaloralorwrittenexammaybeundertaken.Enforcedgraduate-levelprerequisitecoursesmustbecompletedwithaminimumgradeofC.Programsmayhavemorestringentgraderequirementsthanthoseabove,whichareprescribedbytheGraduateSchool;thisisthecasefortheChemistryprogram.
TheDepartmentofChemistryviewsgradesbelowBasunsatisfactoryperformance.Lowgradeswillresultindepartmentalactions,includingretakingtheclasses,restrictiontotheMaster’sdegree,ordismissalfromthegraduateprogram.Wgradesarealsogenerallyconsideredunsatisfactory.TheChemistryDepartmentrequiresthatgraduatestudentscontinuetomakesatisfactoryprogressintheirprogramthroughouttheirstudiesatOSU;thisincludesconveningrequiredmeetings,completingallotherrequirements,andmakingcontinuousresearchprogress.
8.7.IncompleteGrades
An“I”(incomplete)gradeisgrantedonlyatthediscretionoftheinstructor.Theincompletethatisfiledbytheinstructorattheendofthetermmustincludeanalternate/defaultgradetowhichtheincompletegradedefaultsattheendofthespecifiedtimeperiod.ThetimeallocatedtocompletetherequiredtasksforthecoursemaybeextendedbypetitiontotheUniversityAcademicRequirementsCommittee.YoucanobtaintheformfromtheRegistrar’sOffice.Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytoseethat“I”gradesareremovedwithintheallottedtime.

8.8.EthicsRequirement
OSUrequiresethicalresearchtrainingaspartofallgraduatestudentprograms.AllgraduatestudentsinChemistrymustcompleteeithertheCollaborativeInstitutionalTrainingInitiative(CITI)courseintheResponsibleConductofResearch(RCR)oranRCRcourseprovidedbyOSU.TheCITIRCRcourse(http:\\www.citiprogram.org)containsseverallearningmodulesthataretakenindividually,andcanbecompletedonlineatnocost.Youshouldregisterforthesite(indicatingyouraffiliationwithOSU),andcompletealltherequiredmodulesforoneoftheRCRcourses.AftercompletingtheRCRcourse,usethemainmenulinktodownloadorprintacoursecompletionreport,andsendthisreporttotheChemistryOffice.YoudonotneedtoregisterforCEcredits(whicharenotfree)aspartofChemistryDepartmentorOSUrequirements.Forstudentswhohavenotyetscheduledtheirprogrammeetings,thecoursecompletionreportmustbereceivedpriortothismeeting.Completionofthiscourseisrequiredpriortoyourfirstgraduateprogrammeeting.Ifyourresearchinvolveshumanoranimalsubjects,youmayberequiredtocompleteadditionaltrainingmodulesontheCITIsite.Youcandiscusstherequirementswithyourmajoradvisor.
8.9.PublishingFacultymembershavearangeofpoliciesonpublishingresults,forexample,onwhereandwhentosubmitresults,andonthenumberandorderoftheco-authorslisted.Insomecases,thesedecisionsdepend on external factors such as the source of project funding. The best time to clarify anyquestionsisatthebeginningofaresearchproject.Bringanyconcernsorquestionsaboutpublishingresultsdirectlytoyourmajoradvisor.
8.10.StudentConductandCommunityStandardsGraduatestudentsenrolledatOregonStateUniversityareexpectedtoconformtobasicregulationsandpoliciesdevelopedtogovernthebehaviorofstudentsasmembersoftheuniversitycommunity.TheOfficeofStudentConductandCommunityStandards(SCCS)isthecentralcoordinatingofficeforstudentconduct-relatedmattersatOregonStateUniversity.ChoosingtojointheOregonStateUniversitycommunityobligateseachmembertoacodeofresponsiblebehaviorwhichisoutlinedintheStudentConductCode.TheassumptionuponwhichthisCodeisbasedisthatallpersonsmusttreatoneanotherwithdignityandrespectinorderforscholarshiptothrive.Violationsoftheregulationssubjectastudenttoappropriatedisciplinaryaction.8.11.AcademicDishonestyAcademicDishonestyisdefinedasanactofdeceptioninwhichastudentseekstoclaimcreditfortheworkoreffortofanotherperson,orusesunauthorizedmaterialsorfabricatedinformationinanyacademicworkorresearch,eitherthroughtheStudent’sowneffortsortheeffortsofanother.Itincludes:

9.2.RoleofMajorProfessor(Advisor)andProcessforSelection
Althoughyouwillspenda lotof timethe firstyearwithclassesandteaching,aChemistryPhD ismainlyabout research.FormostMaster’s students, research is alsoamajorpartof theprogram.SelectingamajoradvisorandaresearchtopicisthereforeoneofthemostimportantdecisionsthatyouwillmakeatOSU!Werecommendexploringatleastfourresearchgroups/opportunitiesbeforemakingyourdecision.AworksheettotrackinteractionswithpotentialadvisorsisavailablehereandthecompletedformshouldbehandedintoSarahBurtonbeforetheendoffallterm.OnceyouhavereachedagreementwithaProfessorwhowillserveasyourmajoradvisorandjoinedaresearchgroup,becomeinvolvedinresearchassoonaspossible.Substantialpresenceintheresearchlaboratoryistypicallyrequired.Unlessyoupreviouslyreachedagreementwithandjoinedtheresearchgroupofamajoradvisor,youwill be assigned a temporary advisor when you begin your graduate program. Yourgraduatecommitteeguidesyourcourseworkandresearchandservesasyourfinalexaminingcommittee. 9.4.ProgramofStudy
GraduatestudentsmustfileaProgramofStudyformwiththeGraduateSchool.Thefirststepistodiscuss your program with your advisor. 9.5.AnnualIndividualTrainingandDevelopmentPlanReportsOnceeachyear,betweenMay1andMay15,allgraduatestudentsmustsubmitanupdatedIndividualTrainingandDevelopmentPlan (IDP) to theGraduateProgramCoordinator (SarahBurton). ThereportattachedtotheIDPshouldinclude(1)activitiesandaccomplishmentsduringthepastyear,(2)anticipatedresultsofcurrentresearch,(3)aprogramstatusupdate,and(4)anyimpedimentstoprogressandsuccess.Thereportshouldbe1-2pagesinlengthandsignedbyyourmajoradvisor.Thepurposeofthereportistoensurethatallstudentsaremakingadequateprogressintheirprograms.If there are issues, corrective action can begin immediately. For first-year students, a report canindicateperformanceincoursework,selectionofamajoradvisor,researchplans,andindicatethataProgramofStudyhasbeenfiled.AllgraduatestudentsmustsubmitasignedIDPinorderforsummerfinancialsupporttobeawardedbythedepartment.

Asdescribedbelow,manyPhDstudentsnowobtainaconcurrentMaster’sdegree(seesection9.10).An application to the Graduate School is required to enroll in concurrent degree programs. TheMaster’s final oral exammay be scheduled on the same day as the PhD preliminary oral exam.However,allcourseworkfortheMaster’sdegreemustbecompletedpriortotheMSfinaloralexam.PhDcandidacyexamination(the'oralprelim')Toadvancetocandidacy,PhDstudentsmustpassanoralpreliminaryexaminationbytheirdoctoralcommitteenearthecompletionoftheircoursework.Thisca.two-hourexamexaminesmasteryofconceptsandpreparednesstocompletethesisresearch.Theexammayincludeapresentationofyourprogress on thesis research, research proposals (generally on topics pre-approved by themajoradvisororthecommittee),and/orgeneralquestionsaboutyourareaofchemistry.Theoralpreliminaryexamisnormallyscheduledduringthethirdyearofgraduatestudybutsomedivisionsmayholdthemearlier.Atleastonecompleteacademictermmustelapsebetweenthetimeof the preliminary exam and the final defense. PhDFinalExamination/ThesisDefenseAfter completing their PhD research and preparing their theses, students take a final oral exam/thesisdefense.Themeetingisnormally2-3hoursinlengthandbeginswithanoralpresentationofthethesisresearchthatisopentothepublic.Thisisfollowedbyaclosed-doorexambythecommitteefocusingonyourthesisworkandyourfieldofspecialization.SchedulethisexamwiththeGraduateSchoolandyourcommitteeasa3-hourmeetingatleasttwoweeksinadvance.Thefinalexammustbescheduledat leastonefullacademicterm,butnomorethanfiveyears,aftercompletionofthepreliminaryexam.SomedeadlinesforyourfinalexamandPhDcompletionareasfollows:

9.10.ConcurrentPursuitofMSandPhDDegrees
OSUencouragesPhDtrackgraduatestudentstoobtainanMSdegreeintheirdisciplineenroutetothePhDdegree.ThisispermittedprovidingthatthestudentdoesnotalreadyholdanMSdegreeinthatsubjectfromaUSbasedinstitution.ToincentivizetheconcurrentpursuitofMSandPhDdegreesamongourgraduatestudents,theDepartmentofChemistryhasadoptedthefollowingpolicy:
• forallPhDtrackgraduatestudentswhostartedafter2015andwhohavenotpreviouslybeenawardedanMSdegreeinChemistryfromaUSinstitution,afiledMSprogramofstudywillberequiredtoqualifyforconsiderationfor:
(a)departmentalmatchingfundsforqualifyingtravelorprofessionaldevelopment,and(b) firstpriorityforsummerandacademicyeardepartmentscholarships/fellowships
ObtaininganMSdegreeinChemistryenroutetoaPhDdegreeinChemistryatOSUiseasytoachievefromaproceduralstandpoint.Forsomestudentsitmayrequiretakingoneortwoadditionalclasses,but many students will already have enough classes in their PhD programs to also satisfy therequirementsforanMSdegree.Topursuethisoption,youmustfileaprogramofstudyforthekindofMSdegreeofinterest(eithernon-thesisorthesis),inadditiontohavingaPhDprogramofstudyon file, and make the Graduate School aware that MS and PhD degrees are being pursuedconcurrently. Before going ahead, please talk to your advisor about the best option for you, andconsult with the Graduate School for any further guidance.
