Summer School Registration March 2011

Dear Parent (s): Presented in this letter is an overview of walk-in registration and other necessary information for you and your son/daughter to successfully complete their summer school registration for 2011. Summer school dates are June 20 through July 29, 2011. Classes will not be held on Monday, July 4.

Summer School registration will be held at Oconomowoc High School 641 E. Forest Street, Oconomowoc

Saturday, March 12, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Important Information for walk-in registration: • Enrichment courses have a limit, class sizes will be clearly indicated in the summer school brochure. No sections of enrichment courses will be added. • Each adult may only register one family to allow all participants an equal opportunity to register for

courses. Registration process: • Parents will be given a number on a “first come-first served” basis when they arrive at Oconomowoc

High School. Please enter the building through the Gymnasium doors. Numbers will be distributed in the Lower Gym at approximately 7:50 a.m. on March 12th.

• Course registration will occur in the Cafeteria. Tables will be set up and clearly marked with courses. Parents will give their duplicate registration form to the staff member to write the course title, section, dates, and fees.

• Parents will then proceed to the check-out table. Staff will collect money and give parents a copy of the duplicate form for record of their child(ren)’s summer school schedule.

• Cash or check for the proper amount will be accepted for payment. Registrations will not be accepted without payment.

New for Summer School 2011: • The majority of Grades 5-12 summer school programming will be held at Nature Hill Intermediate

School. School hours at Nature Hill Intermediate School will be from 8:15 to 12:15. (All other sites will have summer school from 8:00-12:00). Please check the brochures carefully for course time and location.

If you are unable to attend walk-in registration, mail-in registration begins March 28, 2011 through April 22, 2011. Check the website at www.oasd.k12.wi.us for summer school updates. Please bring information needed for registration, listed on page 16 of the summer school brochure, to the walk-in registration on Saturday, March 12, 2011. Walk-in registration will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2011 from 8:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m. at Oconomowoc High School, 641 E. Forest Street , Oconomowoc. Registration forms will be completed at walk-in registration. Follow-up email or letters will only be sent in the event of conflict or closed classes. No waiting list will be maintained for classes capped at maximum enrollment. Should a class be canceled, parents will be notified and given an opportunity to choose an alternate offering if one is available. Mail-in registration forms will be available at each school office or on the OASD website beginning March 28, 2011 for any courses with openings after walk-in registration is completed on March 12. Summer School registrations will NOT be accepted after June 10, 2011, except for High School credit recovery courses.

Students are expected to attend summer school regularly. Parents are requested to contact the Summer School Office to report student absences. All calls to report student absences should be directed to Summit Elementary School: 262-560-8303 (Health Room). Students may wear casual dress during the summer session. It is expected that clothing worn be neat, clean, and appropriate for school purposes. Students MUST WEAR SHOES (NO FLIP-FLOPS). No hats are allowed. This information brochure contains classes for students entering Grades 4K-4 classes. It is important that you note the location where classes will be held. Grade 5-12 classes are in a separate brochure which is available on the district’s website: www.oasd.k12.wi.us.

MATH IMPROVEMENT Students will explore mathematical concepts through hands-on thematic activities. Problem solving will be the central focus of this mathe-matics program. Students will share their thinking and ap-proaches with each other as well as the teacher. They will learn several ways of representing problems and strategies for solving them. The class will be filled with thought provoking questions, speculations, investigations and exploration. Con-siderable instructional time will be spent helping children de-velop good number concepts that will help them with their computation work. This course is designed to meet students unique and individual needs. This daily, two-hour course will focus on rein-forcing the strategies of reading essential to be-coming a successful lifelong reader. Children will have the opportunity to explore and read a

SCRAP BOOKING Memories are precious, pictures are too! It’s time to learn what you can do when you put your photographs and creativity to-gether. Students will use their imaginations to design and cre-ate their own scrapbook pages. Students will work on develop-ing techniques to safely and creatively store their photographs. Each day will present a new technique. Students need to come to class with about 30 pictures that will be cut and creatively made into precious scrapbook pages. Who knew that studying geography and culture through art could be so much fun? Students will travel the world and make art projects that reflect the particular coun-try and all seven continents will be visited. Flags and maps will also be used on our travels. Some projects and places may include Mexico: metal tooling and Ojo de Dios, Canada: Maple Leaf quilt, France: clay gargoyles, Australia: paperweight, China: dragons, and much more. Several mediums will be in-corporated with different paints, markers, pencils, oil and chalk pastels, embossing tools, clay, plaster, and a variety of craft supplies like beads, feathers, wire, string, etc. Let's pack our art briefcases and jumpstart our creative, inquisitive minds. After teaching skills, there will be a small competition/meet the last week of summer school for grades 2 - 8. High School gymnasts will judge the competition. Become a part of a highly qualified group of kids engaging in top secret missions. The class will begin with basic agent training consisting of fingerprinting and completing an obstacle course. Students will do many activities to simulate the life of a real spy or detective such as decoding, having ali-ases or code names, examining evidence, assembling puzzles that lead to more clues, map reading/map making, physical mazes, observation skills, fingerprinting, and footprints. Stu-dents will make their own spy kit/briefcase to take with them to solve each “crime”. LEGO MANIA Build, build, and build. Use your imagination to design and construct your own Lego creations. Students will not only design and create their own Lego structures but will also use their Legos to further develop their reading comprehension. Stu-dents will use their Legos to create story settings as well as different objects based on categories they come up with. Stu-dents will need to come to class with a one gallon baggie filled with Lego pieces. In class they will take their own inventory so that their pieces will be returned at the end of the session. Walk-in registration will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Oconomowoc High School, 641 E. Forest Street, Oconomowoc from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. A registration form will be available for completion at registration. A registration form must be completed for each child and only one adult can register per family.
