Advanced Joystick Controls.Two electro-hydraulic joysticks reducehand and wrist movement as much as78% compared to conventional levercontrols for greatly enhanced operatorefficiency. The intuitive pattern iseasy to learn and provides the preciseimplement control you expect fromCaterpillar.

Auxiliary Pod and Ripper Control.The optional ripper control and auxiliarycontrol pod are ergonomically positionedto allow simple, comfortable operationfor the multiple hydraulic options.

Low Interior Sound and VibrationLevels. Isolation mounts for the cab,engine and transmission, in additionto the relocation of the hydraulic pumpand valves, provide significant soundand vibration reductions. The lowvibration levels and quiet interiorprovide a comfortable work environment.

HVAC. The heating, ventilation andair conditioning system uses intelligentvent placement for consistent climatecontrol and clear windows for everycondition. The high-capacity systemdehumidifies air and pressurizes thecab, circulating fresh air and sealing outdust. An easily accessible fresh air filteris located outside the cab at groundlevel for quick replacement or cleaning.

Additional Cab Features. Additional cabfeatures include cup holder, lighter andashtray, coat hook, storage area, nighttime light, power port and heater.Optional rearview camera, 25 amppower converter and radio are alsoavailable.

Ease of Operation. The revolutionaryjoystick controls and exceptionalvisibility make the 120M easier tooperate without sacrificing control.

The intuitive joystick control patternallows both new and experiencedoperators to become productive quickly.

Logical grouping of hydraulic functionsin the joysticks allow any operator toeasily control several functions at thesame time. This allows the operatorto be more productive and remaincomfortable throughout the work shift.

Intuitive Steering Control. The 120Mintroduces a breakthrough in joysticksteering control. This technologycreates a direct relationship betweenthe lean angle of the joystick and theturning angle of the steer tires.

A brake tensioning system holds thejoystick in position until the operatormoves it. In addition, the steeringcontrol automatically reduces steeringsensitivity at higher ground speeds forcomfortable and predictable control.

Electronic Throttle Control. ElectronicThrottle Control (ETC) provides theoperator with easy, precise, and consistentthrottle operation. An automatic andmanual mode on a single switch offersflexibility for different applications andoperator preferences.

Front Frame Structure. The 120M frontframe is a formed structural carbon steeltube. Advanced fabrication technologysignificantly reduces the number of weldjoints, which more evenly distributesstress loads. The result is a robustmachine that delivers the durabilityyou expect from Caterpillar.

Rear Frame Structure. The box-sectionedhitch design helps resist torsion loadsand ensure structural durability.The integrated bumper ties the rearframe together as a single, solid unit,so the frame can withstand heavy-dutyapplications such as ripping andwinging snow.

Articulation Hitch. A large taperedroller bearing at the lower pivot carriesloads evenly and smoothly. This joint issealed to prevent contamination in thiscritical area.

A mechanical locking pin preventsframe articulation to help ensure safetywhen servicing or transporting themachine.

Circle Construction. Our one-pieceforged steel circle is built to stand up tohigh stress loads and provide structuraldurability. The front 240° of circle teethare hardened to reduce wear and ensurecomponent reliability.

Drawbar Construction. The A-framedrawbar features a tubular design forhigh strength and optimum durability.

Aggressive Blade Angle.With a longwheelbase the operator can obtainaggressive moldboard angles, so materialrolls more freely along the length of theblade. This is particularly helpful whenhandling very dry materials or cohesivesoils. Better material control gets thejob done faster, requires less powerand saves fuel.

Top-Adjust Drawbar Wear Strips.The patented top-adjust wear stripsdramatically reduce drawbar/circleadjustment time. By removing theaccess plates on top of the drawbar,shims and wear strips can easily beadded or replaced. This feature reducesservice downtime and lowers overallmachine operating costs.

Replaceable Wear Inserts. Tough,durable nylon composite wear insertsreduce rotational friction for maximumcircle torque and longer component life.They are located between the drawbarand circle, and between the supportshoes and circle. High load-resistantbrass wearstrips are placed between theblade mounting group and moldboard.This sacrificial wear system can bereplaced easily and helps keepcomponents tight for fine grading.

Moldboard. The optimal curvatureand large throat clearance help movematerial quickly and efficiently.Heat-treated moldboard rails, hardenedcutting edges and end bits, and largediameter bolts assure reliability andlonger service life. The moldboard sideshift cylinder is positioned on the leftside to eliminate snow wing interference.

Moldboard Positioning. The blade linkbar design extends the possibilities formoldboard positioning, most beneficialin mid-range bank sloping and in ditchcutting and cleaning.

Shimless Moldboard Retention System.The unique shimless moldboardretention system reduces the potentialfor blade chatter. Vertical and horizontaladjusting screws keep the moldboard’swear strips aligned for precise bladecontrol and dramatic reductions inservice time.

Smooth Shifting Transmission. The 120Mcombines several key innovations toensure smooth, powerful shifts throughoutthe gear range.

Electronically Controlled Shifting.The full Electronic Clutch PressureControl (ECPC) system optimizesinching modulation and smooths shiftingbetween all gears and directionalchanges. This provides outstandingcontrol and also extends the life of thetransmission by reducing stress on gears.

Load Compensation. This standardfeature ensures consistent shift qualityregardless of blade or machine load.

Controlled Throttle Shifting. This standardfeature helps to smooth directional andgear changes without use of theinching pedal.

Engine Over-Speed Protection.Helps protect the transmission andextend component life by preventingdownshifting until a safe travel speedhas been established.

Power Shift Countershaft Transmission.Designed and manufactured specificallyfor the 120M motor grader, the directdrive countershaft transmission ismatched with the powerful Cat C6.6engine to maximize power to the ground.

Front Axle. The Cat sealed spindle keepsthe bearings free from contaminantsand lubricated in a light-weight oil (1).This durable, low-maintenance designreduces your owning and operating costs.Two tapered roller bearings (2) supportthe wheel spindle. The Cat “Live Spindle”design places the larger tapered rollerbearing outboard where the load isgreater, extending bearing life.

Gear Selection. Eight forward andsix reverse gears give the operator awide operating range. The specificallydesigned range of gears ensuresmaximum productivity in allearthmoving applications.

Programmable Autoshift. The operatorcan easily customize various shiftparameters through Cat Messengerto match the specific applicationrequirement. This feature automaticallyshifts the transmission at optimal pointsso the operator can focus on the work,improving safety, productivity andease of operation.

Inching Pedal. Allows precise controlof machine movements in any gearwith low pedal effort and excellentmodulation, critical in close-quarterwork or finish grading.

Hydraulic Brakes. The oil bathed,multi-disc service brakes arehydraulically actuated (1), providingsmooth predictable braking and loweroperating costs. With brakes located ateach tandem wheel, the 120M offersthe largest total brake surface area inthe industry (2), delivering dependablestopping power and longer brake life.

Brake Serviceability and Reliability.An easily accessible brake wearindicator/compensator system (3)maintains consistent brake performanceand indicates brake wear withoutdisassembly. This system cuts servicetime and extends brake service life.

Parking Brake. The spring-applied,hydraulically released multi-discparking brake is a sealed, oil-cooleddesign extending component life andreducing the need for service. The parkingbrake is integrated into the OperatorPresence System to prevent unintendedmachine movement.

ACERT™ Technology. ACERTTechnology allows Cat enginesto supply more power per unit ofdisplacement without causing prematurewear. This breakthrough technologyreduces emissions during the combustionprocess by using advanced technology inthe air and fuel systems, in conjunctionwith integrated electronics. ACERTTechnology enhances overall engineperformance while dramaticallyreducing exhaust emissions.

Fuel Delivery. The C6.6 engine withACERT Technology uses multipleinjection fuel delivery to precisely shapethe combustion cycle. Several smallignitions lower combustion chambertemperatures, generates fewer emissionsand optimizes fuel combustion. Bottomline: more work output for your fuel cost.

Power Management. The 120M PowerManagement System automaticallydelivers an additional five horsepowerin each forward gear 1st through 4th,and each reverse gear 1st through 3rd.This standard feature optimizes rimpullfor all gears by balancing traction,speed and horsepower while conservingfuel. The system limits horsepower inlower gears, which helps reduce wheelslip where traction is limited. With theVariable Horsepower Plus (VHP Plus)option, an additional five-horsepoweris delivered in each forward gear 5th

through 8th for more power athigher speeds.

Performance. The Cat C6.6 engine meetsspecific performance requirements for120M applications. Its superior torqueand lugging capability can pull throughsudden, short-term increases in loads,maintaining consistent, desirablegrading speeds to get the work donefaster without downshifting.

Hydraulic Demand Fan. The hydraulicdemand fan automatically adjustscooling fan speed according to enginecooling requirements. This systemreduces demands on the engine, puttingmore horsepower to the ground andimproving fuel efficiency.

Exhaust Emissions Certified.The Cat C6.6 with ACERT Technologymeets or exceeds all U.S. EPA Tier 3and European Union Stage IIIaemissions control standards.

Advanced Electro-Hydraulic System.The 120M incorporates a state-of-the-artelectro-hydraulic system. This technologyis the foundation for revolutionarychanges of the machine and implementcontrols. Advanced joystick controlsprovide unmatched controllability withprecise, predictable hydraulic movementsand the reliability you expect fromCaterpillar.

Blade Float. Blade float is built into theblade lift control valves and is optionalfor some auxiliary hydraulic functions.The blade float feature allows the bladeto move freely under its own weight.By floating both cylinders, the bladecan follow the contours of the roadwhen removing snow. Floating onlyone cylinder permits the toe of theblade to follow a hard surface whilethe operator controls the slope withthe other lift cylinder.

Independent Oil Supply. Large, separatehydraulic oil supply prevents cross-contamination and provides proper oilcooling, which reduces heat build-upand extends component life.

Load Sensing Hydraulics (PPPC).The time proven load-sensing systemand the advanced Proportional PriorityPressure-Compensating (PPPC, or“triple-PC”) electro-hydraulic valveson the 120M are designed to providesuperior implement control and enhancedmachine performance in all applications.Continuous matching of hydraulic flowand pressure to power demands createsless heat and reduces powerconsumption.

Cat® XT™ Hose. Cat hose technologyallows high pressures for maximumpower and reduced downtime.Intelligent routing minimizes exposureto damage. Hose clips prevent hoserubbing and excessive vibration forlower owning and operating costs.

Balanced Flow. Hydraulic flow isproportioned to ensure all implementsoperate simultaneously with little effecton the engine or implement speeds.If demand exceeds pump capacity,all cylinder velocities are reduced bythe same ratio. The result is improvedproductivity in all applications.

Consistent and Predictable Movement.PPPC valves have different flow ratesfor the head (red) and rod ends (blue)of the cylinder. This ensures consistentextension and retraction speeds foreach cylinder, and gives the operator aconsistent and predictable response everytime an implement control is moved.

“Smart Machine”. The 120M fullyintegrates all core systems creating a“Smart Machine.” The Cat data linkshares key data among systems,optimizing machine performance whilepreventing potential machine damage.

Diagnostics. Cat Messenger, combinedwith full systems integration, enhancesthe diagnostic capability of the 120M.Machine system errors are displayedin text as well as with fault codes,allowing service technicians andoperators to quickly analyze criticaldata, increasing machine availability.

Optional Automatic Blade Control.The Cat AccuGrade System automaticallycontrols the blade, improving operatorefficiency and productivity. AccuGrade™technology reduces the need for traditionalsurvey stakes or grade checkers, so youcan reach grade faster and in fewerpasses than ever before.

AccuGrade Attachment Ready Option.The AccuGrade System is fully integratedinto the machine design, makinginstallation quick and easy. Integralhydraulic and electrical components arestandard on the 120M (Grade ControlReady). Electronic Technician (Cat ET). Cat ETis a two-way communication tool thatgives service technicians easy accessto stored diagnostic data and lets themconfigure the machine parametersthrough the Cat Data Link. This integratedfeature reduces machine downtime andlowers operating costs.

Cat Messenger. Standard on the 120M,Cat Messenger provides real-timemachine performance and diagnosticdata with an easy-to-use interface.Messenger monitors all system data andalerts the operator of any faults througha digital text display that can be shownin multiple languages.

Low Battery Elevated Idle. After the120M is at low idle for an extendedperiod and low system voltage is detected,idle speed is raised. This ensuresadequate system voltage and improvesbattery reliability.

Automatic Engine Deration. Protects theC6.6 engine by automatically loweringengine torque output and alerting theoperator if critical conditions are detected. Machine Security System (MSS).

The optional MSS uses electronicallycoded keys to limit usage by specificindividuals or times of the day.MSS deters theft, vandalism andunauthorized use.

All Wheel Drive (AWD) System.The optional AWD system utilizesdedicated left and right pumps forprecise hydraulic control. The infinitelyvariable pumps and motors maximizetorque in each gear delivering the mostpower to the ground in the industry andincreasing productivity in the mostdemanding applications.

Precise control

AWD – Maximum Net Power.When equipped with AWD, the 120Mwill automatically increase power upto 26 kW (35 hp) when the systemis engaged. This offsets the parasiticlosses and maximizes net power tothe ground for increased productivity.

AWD – Hydrostatic Mode. Standardwith AWD, this mode disengages thetransmission and provides hydraulicpower to the front wheels only.The ground speed is infinitely variablebetween 0-8 km/h (0-5 mph), perfectfor precise finish work.

AWD – Steering Compensation.The Cat Steering CompensationSystem is standard with All WheelDrive. This feature enables a “poweredturn” by adjusting the outside front tirespeed up to 50% faster than the insidetire. The result is improved control,less damage to surfaces and a dramaticreduction of turning radius in poorunderfoot conditions.

Moldboard Options. A 3.7 m (12 ft)moldboard is standard on the 120M,with an optional 4.3 m (14 ft) moldboardavailable from the factory. Left sidemoldboard extensions are also available,increasing versatility.

Ground Engaging Tools (GET). A widevariety of Cat GET is available on the120M, including cutting edges, graderbitsand end bits, all designed for maximumservice life and productivity.

Front Mounted Groups. A front mountedpush plate/counterweight or front liftgroup can be ordered on the 120M.The Cat Work Tools front lift groupcan be combined with a front dozer bladeor front scarifier for added versatility.

Snow Removal Work Tools. Cat WorkTools offer a variety of snow removalequipment specifically for the 120M.Multiple snow plow, snow wing andmounting options are available, addingadditional machine versatility andutilization throughout the year.

Air Compressor. An optional aircompressor is available, giving you aconvenient on-board air system to blowdebris off the machine and operatepower tools.

Rear Ripper/Scarifier. The 120M optionalripper is made to penetrate tough materialfast and rip thoroughly for easiermaterial movement with the moldboard.The ripper includes three shanks withthe ability to add two more if needed.Nine scarifier shanks can also be addedfor additional versatility.

Operator Presence System. The OperatorPresence System keeps the parkingbrake engaged and hydraulic implementsdisabled until the operator is seated andthe machine is ready for safe operation.

Secondary Steering System. The standardsecondary steering system automaticallyengages an electric hydraulic pump incase of a drop in steering pressure,allowing the operator to steer themachine to a stop.

Speed Sensitive Steering. The steeringsoftware automatically provides aninfinitely variable ratio between thejoystick and the steer tires, resultingin less sensitive steering as the groundspeed increases.

Low Sound and Vibration Levels.Isolation mounts for the cab, engineand transmission maximize operatorcomfort and help to minimize soundand vibration. These modificationsprovide a quieter and more comfortableworking environment, optimizingoperator focus.

Hydraulic Lockout. A simple switchlocated in the cab disables all implementfunctions while still providing machinesteering control. This safety feature isespecially useful while the machineis roading.

Brake Systems. Brakes are located ateach tandem wheel to eliminate brakingloads on the power train. In addition,the brake systems are redundant andutilize accumulators to enable stoppingin case of machine failure, furtherincreasing operational safety.

Circle Drive Slip Clutch. This standardfeature protects the drawbar, circle andmoldboard from shock loads when theblade encounters an immovable object.It also reduces the possibility of abruptdirectional changes in poor tractionconditions, protecting the machine,operator and surroundings.

Steel Tandem Walkways. Perforatedraised steel walkways cover the tandems.This provides a sturdy platform forstanding and walking, and additionalprotection for the brake lines.

ROPS/FOPS Cab. Isolation mountedto the frame to reduce vibration andsound, the integral ROPS/FOPSstructure meets ISO and SAE criteriafor operator protection.

Blade Lift Accumulators. This optionalfeature uses accumulators to help absorbimpact loads to the moldboard byallowing vertical blade travel. Blade liftaccumulators reduce unnecessary wearand help to avoid unintended machinemovement for increased operator safety.

Engine Shutoff Switch. An engineshutoff switch is located at ground levelon the left rear of the machine, allowinganyone nearby to shut it down in case ofan emergency.

Electrical Disconnect Switch. A batterydisconnect switch, located inside theleft rear enclosure, provides ground-level lockout of the electrical systemto prevent inadvertent starting ofthe machine.

Fenders. To help reduce objects flyingfrom the tires, as well as build-up ofmud, snow and debris, optional fenderscan be added.

Additional Safety Features. The 120Mhas many additional standard safetyfeatures, including laminated glass onthe front windows and doors, lockabledoors, back-up lights and soundingalarm, black glare-reducing paint onthe front frame and engine enclosure,and conveniently located grab rails foradded safety.
