    SPOTLIGHT

We often came to this small town on Chhotanagpur to spend out Puja holidays. Somestayed in ancestral houses, others stayed with relatives and friends and the rest went tothe local hotels. It was a peaceful place. Ten days in a place like this was enough to addat least six months to an average lifespan. My father often said, The cost of living mayhave gone up but the water you drink and the air you breathe are still free. And no onesay their quality has suffered in any way here.

We usually arrived in a large group, with the result that ten days went by very quickly, despite the absence of city life. If one were to ask whether what we did in these tendays varied from one year to the next, it would be difficult to find an answer. Weinevitably ate the same stuff every day: chicken, eggs, arhar ki dal, fresh milk, guavasand other fruits from our own garden. We followed the same routine to bed at 10 p.m.,rise at 6, spend the afternoon playing cards and Monopoly, go for a stroll in the evening:have a picnic at least once during our stay, by the side of the river. Everything we sawwas always just the same: bright sunshine and fluffy white clouds, the birds, theanimals, the insects, the trees, the plants and the flowers.

But not this time. On this occasion, things took a different turn. The famous AnshumanChattarjee was in the same town this time. He stayed in a rented house with three of hissycophants. They moved around the place in a yellow air-conditioned Mercedes withtinted glass windows.

Personally, I had never liked Anshuman Chatterjee. But of course, that did not stop himfrom being the most popular film star in my native state West Bengal. My twelve-year-old sister, Sharmi, had filled a whole scrapbook with his pictures from gloss filmmagazines.

There were boys in my own class who were his admirers. They had already startedcopying his hairstyle, his speech, his mannerisms and style of dressing. AnshumanChatterjee, the heartthrob of many a teenager, was in the same place as we were! This reminded me of something. Once, on our way to the Andamans, I had noticed how

the smaller boats rocked and swayed in the huge waves, which our own ship keptthrowing up. In my imagination, the celebrity Anshuman became a ship, rocking andswaying smaller boats, that is, the other visitors like us. When he came out on the streetin his Mercedes, the other tourists simply drowned in the ripples he left behind! Therehad never been such excitement in this small town, believe me!
