Emma Cruz makes caps for babies in the hospital.

Read the story and talk about it.

Essential QuestionHow can people help out their community?

Helping BabiesNarrative Nonfiction

Emma Cruz liked to help out at the hospital. She went there every Monday and helped take care of the babies. Emma sat in a rocking chair and gently rocked the babies.

Emma noticed that all the babies wore caps. A nurse explained that newborn babies need the caps to stay warm. There were many babies in the hospital. They needed a lot of caps. Emma came up with a solution. She realized that she could provide caps to the hospital!

Emma learned how to knit when she was little. She knew how to use knitting needles and yarn to make things. Emma told her friends that the babies

needed caps. She suggested that they get together and knit. They liked Emma’s idea and helped Emma knit caps.

Emma took the caps to the hospital. The nurses gave each baby a warm cap.

Emma said, “I like helping the babies. Now, our caps help babies, too!”

The ground dries up during a drought. Then plants can die.

Read the text and discuss it with someone.

Essential QuestionHow does weather affect us?

When It Doesn’t RainExpository Text

A drought is a long time with very little snow or rain. A drought is not sudden like a rainstorm with thunder and lightning. A drought can last for months or even years.

All living things need water to survive. Droughts can be dangerous for animals and plants. They can cause serious problems for people.

A drought can cause a lot of damage. It can harm lakes, rivers, and streams. A drought causes plants to dry up and die. This means there will be less food available. Wildfires are more dangerous when there are drought conditions. Fires spread faster when plants are dry.

There are many things people

can do to save water. They can take shorter showers. They can turn the water off when brushing their teeth. They can fix leaky faucets. And they can grow plants that don’t need much water. Remember, water is very important!
