NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE• NSC is a school-leaving certificate, not a university-entrance

certificate• Changes are being made each year as each successive

group of pupils write the NSC and enter tertiary education, of grave concern is mathematics and literacy

• National Pass Rate remains dismal in state schools, however, they are striving to reach their targets

• As each group of learners arrive at tertiary level, universities make adjustments to their entrance requirements to meet the new demands

• Universities are lifting entrance requirements and applicants are required to write the National Benchmarking Tests

• Candidates interested in applying to health sciences must ensure they write the earlier sitting of the NBT

NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE

What does this all mean?

It is easier to pass matric!

It is easier to achieve University Exemption!

It is more difficult than ever to get into university and faculty of your choice!

Page 8: GRADE 12 MEETING TUESDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2014

To achieve a NSC Certificate

Minimum pass requirements:Home Language (English) – 40%2 X 40%3 X 30%1 failing subject condoned

This does not get you into universityAll portfolio requirements must be met(Non-compliance in LO= grounds for failing)

Page 9: GRADE 12 MEETING TUESDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2014

University Entrance Requirements• For a Higher Certificate, NSC is enough• For a Diploma, a 4X3 is needed• For a Degree, a 4x4 is needed (English must be one)

LO does not count as one of the 4, however, a minimum of level 4 must be achievedMaths Lit candidates must carefully check the faculties requirements

RATING RATING MARKS%

University Entrance Requirements• NSC is the primary gateway but does not

guarantee entry• Autonomy of HE Institutions – own criteria as

well as within each faculty• Other hurdles put in place – escalating minimum

requirements for each level of HE• Institutions and faculties differ, keep checking

the institution’s website for updates• PARENTS AND BOYS MUST BE PROACTIVE

IN THIS REGARD• CAREERS DAY: 15th of May at St Andrews

the course that you have registered for.

• You apply to more than one university.

• You apply to more than one faculty(plan B).

Page 15: GRADE 12 MEETING TUESDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2014

• In the past when people submitted similar work it was called copying

• Now it is called collaboration

Page 20: GRADE 12 MEETING TUESDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2014

Purpose of the Portfolio

• To produce at least 25% of your son’s result before the final exam is written

• Consists of tasks and test (incl prelim) during the year

• Intended to be advantageous• Should be at least 10% above the final exam mark• Provides the IEB with a rank order for statistical

adjustment

February 2011 20

Page 21: GRADE 12 MEETING TUESDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2014

Copying in an IEB Exam

• Confiscate incriminating information• Remove book and indicate on it the time of

removal• Issue the candidate with another book and

allow the candidate to continue writing• A report is then sent with the paper back to

IEB(irregularities) who will then make a decision whether or not to prosecute

February 2011 21

Page 22: GRADE 12 MEETING TUESDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2014

Copying in an St Benedict’s Exam – Similar Procedure

• Confiscate incriminating information• Remove book and indicate on it the time of

removal• Issue the candidate with another book and

allow the candidate to continue writing• A hearing will be held, if the exam is the

prelim, the SBA will be deemed non compliant by the IEB.

Page 24: GRADE 12 MEETING TUESDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2014

Plagiarism• Copying directly or even rewording text without

referencing• IEB takes this very seriously• All the moderators/teachers need is one line of text• If detected by a teacher at St Benedict’s –

– First offense - task is given 0, Conduct record entry, 5 demerits, level 2 detention

– Second offense - task is given 0, 10 demerits, expulsion/suspension/exclusion

• If detected by IEB - candidate sent to irregularities and dealt with in a similar way as cheating in an exam

February 2011 24

Page 25: GRADE 12 MEETING TUESDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2014

Referencing

• If a text is copied or reworded it needs to be cited DIRECTLY after the paragraph e.g.

(Marieb, 2000)• In addition, this citation must be referenced in

its complete form at the end of the task• Burns, Nancy and Grove, Susan K. (1997) The practice of nursing research: conduct,

critique & utilization. 3rd edition. London, Saunders• Marieb.E. (2000) Essentials of Human anatomy and Physiology: AWL Companion

Web Site.[online]. 6th edition. San Francisco, Benjamin Cummings. Available from: http://occ.awlonline.com/bookbind/pubbooks/marieb-essentials/ [Accessed 4th July 2001].

Copying Tasks or Homework– “working in a group”

• Reference shared ideas. • Indemnifies you• At St Benedict’s

– First offense - task is given 0, Conduct record entry, 5 demerits, level 2 detention

– Second offense – task is given 0, 10 demerits, expulsion/suspension/exclusion

February 2011 28

Page 29: GRADE 12 MEETING TUESDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2014

Tasks Not Submitted

• According to IEB, the portfolio is deemed non compliant and the candidate does not qualify to write the exam

• At St Benedict’s, boys need to submit each and every task

• Strict measures are in place to ensure work is submitted timeously and of a good quality

• Encourage boys to hand in work before the due date so that it can be checked before it is due

MATHS & AP MATHSMrs Marj Povall

HOD: Mathematics

The New Curriculum

• Paper 3 no longer exists

• Most of the content has been has been re-absorbed into Paper 1 and Paper 2

• A few topics that were previously in these papers have been omitted

• We are very confident that this change will happen very smoothly at St Benedict’s as the majority of our learners have been writing Paper 3

anyway

Page 32: GRADE 12 MEETING TUESDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2014

OUR ONLY CONCERN• Geometry forms a large part of the compulsory Paper 2 curriculum

• Grade 11 learners were not very confident with this section last year Planning to do a very large portfolio task to remedy this situation

• Time – Sections taken out ≠ Sections re-absorbed. So the need for a compulsory camp does not go away.

• Practise makes perfect

February 2014 32

Page 33: GRADE 12 MEETING TUESDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2014

THE PILOT PROJECT• Designed for pupils who are likely to pass Mathematics but not assured of getting

50%

• Could risk them getting BD pass ie. University entrance

• Enables them to do both Maths and Maths Lit as subjects

• Don’t need to complete both portfolios - but certain requirements need to be met - extra tests will need to be written

• If more that 50% achieved for Core Maths this mark appears on certificate otherwise the mark for Maths Lit is used

• Some students benefited from this project last year

February 2011 33

Page 34: GRADE 12 MEETING TUESDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2014

ADVANCED PROGRAMME MATHS• 37 boys taking AP Maths at this stage

• Involves a commitment from learners which is difficult in their busy lives. Must attend extra lesson once a week and all camps.

• The Core Maths mark is used for university entrance – so can’t let this be jeopardised

• AP extends the learners beyond basic minimum and enriches understanding

• AP better prepares them for higher order tertiary study

• Doesn’t affect averages. Separate certificate awarded for this course

• Well worthwhile

Page 35: GRADE 12 MEETING TUESDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2014
