Marian Villa Retirement Village We are a non-profit organisation based in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, that cares for 132 senior residents. They are at the centre of all we do.

Our residents say it much better than we ever could when they say it is like moving house (home) but not like moving into an “Old Age” Home. Rather they become part of a caring and compassionate community with their families always being welcome.

Our two-hectare estate has a parklike atmosphere, with colourful gardens and extensive lawns. It is securely fenced and the gate is manned at all times.

The historic Marian Villa homestead contains our offices, meeting rooms, lounge and dining room, a chapel and centre where our residents get together from time to time. The estate is also home to our cottages, mid-care and frail care facilities as well as our laundry and workshop.

Our residents spend time outdoors, some in contemplation, some feeding the birds, gardening or relaxing and passing the time of day with friends or family. When indoors there are many things to enjoy as part of a group or on one’s own including bible study, crafts, exercise classes - even making jigsaws. They are spoilt for choice! We have a “Can Do” approach. Our residents can do as much as they can for as long as they are able.

While they are capable of doing so, our seniors care for themselves but should there come a time when they need a helping hand we are ready to provide whatever is needed. We are committed to maintaining a happy, relaxed and caring environment for all. It may be that just for a short time a resident must move to the respite room as part of the journey to recovery or it may be that a resident becomes frail and needs ongoing care in our frail care facility.

Our AccommodationThe ideal time for a senior to move to a retirement village like Marian Villa is around their late sixties or early seventies while still in good health.

We offer a full range of accommodation facilities:

• Independent living: in a cottage - for those over sixties who take care of themselves.

• Full board and lodging: in a bedsitter or in a veranda room - for those who prefer the rest and relaxation of having others do the day-to-day household chores such as cooking, cleaning and laundry.

• Midcare: in the Victor Daitz Lodge - where a carer is present during the day and a CCTV camera monitors the bedroom areas after hours.

• Frail care: in our frail care wing - for the few who eventually need that extra attention and ongoing care.

• Respite care: for any resident requiring a short, but intense period of care or confinement.

Unfortunately, no pets are allowed, but the resident cat (who adopted us) is a friend to all our residents.

Catering has been outsourced to a specialised team who balance nutritional requirements with palatable, enjoyable meals.

There is undercover parking for residents’ vehicles.
