Bishop Consecration and Installation: The Rev. Rob
Skirving will be ordained and consecrated as the eighth
bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina on November 8 at Rock Springs Center, Greenville. Kay
and Bill Horne will participate in the service as banner
bearer and usher respectively.
Bishop Visitation: Our new bishop will visit Grace
Church on December 7. A reception will
follow the service. Please watch the bulletin board for a food sign-up sheet.
During the worship service, Greg Currie will be
confirmed and Alice Murphy will be received into the Episcopal Church.
Denominational Service Schedule: Reminder - Our
usual arrangement of Sunday worship services will change slightly during November and December.
Special events and feast days will cause alterations in the
schedule. Please check the newsletter monthly calendars to see when a particular denominational service will be
held. This month, the schedule is as posted below: November 2 Episcopal Holy Eucharist, Rite II – All
Saints’ Day (transferred) November 9 Episcopal Holy Eucharist, Rite II November 16 Episcopal Holy Eucharist, Rite I November 23 Lutheran Holy Eucharist – Feast of
Christ the King
November 30 Episcopal Holy Eucharist, Rite II – First Sunday of Advent
Midweek Eucharist Wednesday, November
26th
will be a Thanksgiving Service.
Worship starts at 6 pm. Fellowship meal and Bible Study are cancelled for that evening.
This month’s Grace Family night will be held on
November 19 at 6:30 pm. Please bring a canned food offering for the Food Pantry. Come give thanks!
The new kitchen cabinets
and nursery door have been installed. They (as well as the
entire kitchen) are scheduled
to be painted by Paul Etheridge beginning November 10. Paul is the
professional painter who painted the rector’s office and
parish hall prior to our replacing the floor coverings several years ago. Quotes also are being obtained to re-
paint the red front doors of the church and white wash
the face of the church steps. John Deans has offered to
power wash the steps prior to painting.

Repairs: Jerry Jupina, our ever handy Junior Warden,
has repaired/replaced the plumbing under the sink in the sacristy. He has removed the non-functional lighting
over the kitchen sink and is searching for a more modern
replacement.
The Fall Clean-up Day held Saturday,
October 19th was very successful! Twenty
church members showed up to trim bushes, pull weeds, and do general sprucing up of church lawns
and buildings as well as provide a thorough cleaning of
the kitchen, parish hall, and pantry. Thanks to the “inside team” of ladies lead by Paula Blanchard and Elsie
Campbell, we all enjoyed a satisfying light lunch after
working. A huge “THANK YOU” for all who
participated.
New Mats and Plants: Thanks to the generosity of
Donna and Ray Thigpen, Grace Church now has new non-skid welcome mats for the front church and office
doors. We also have two new decorative plants to fill the
urns by the front steps. Be sure to thank them.
Dates to save: Founders’ Day – May 3, 2015; Centennial
Celebration – July 19, 2015
Addresses for Invitations: The Centennial Committee
needs names and addresses of friends, family members, and former members to invite to Grace Church’s
Centennial Celebration service, July 2015. Please jot
down the contact information of those you think might be
interested in attending in the notebook located on the table by the entrance to the Parish Hall.
Centennial Fund: Please remember that
donations/memorials may be made to the Centennial Fund to help defray celebration expenses.

Christian Formation Beginning Wednesday, November 5, we will begin an early Advent Study titled Mary Had a Baby: An Advent Study Based
on African American Spirituals. During the weeks prior to and
in the season of Advent, one African American spiritual will be
featured, with discussion and interaction based on the Biblical,
Our food pantry continues to be visited by our
neighbors in need. We have to restock all the time:
canned meats and fish, hearty soups and stews, beanie weenies and chili, veggies (especially green
peas, green beans, succotash, tomatoes), fruits, oil,
sugar and flour, tea and coffee, jelly, dried lima and pinto beans, white rice and grits, cereal, cake mixes
and snacks, toilet paper, soap, personal hygiene
items, laundry and dish soap. Food cards to local
grocery stores also are appreciated.
UTO Fall Ingathering: November 2, 9, and 16.
United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of the Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole
church. It is entrusted to promote thank offerings and
to distribute the UTO monies to support mission and ministry throughout the Episcopal Church and in
invited Provinces of the Anglican Communion in the
developing world. UTO envelopes will be placed in
the pews in November. Please be generous. For more information, see Gean Claire Gault.
Coming soon: Operation Christmas Child. Fill a shoe box of gifts and pray for a needy child. Plastic
boxes, as found at the various dollar stores in the
area, are the preferred containers for your gifts.
Labels and lists of suggested items are located on top the bookcase in the parish hall. National collection
week is November 17-24. For more information, see
Kay Horne.
The list of Christmas Families will be posted on the
bulletin board by the rector’s office by mid-November. When you sign up for one (or more) of
the requests, you help brighten the season for
members of our extended family of God and you
reflect our desire as a parish to live out our faith ‘not only with our lips, but in our lives.’ We will wrap the
presents as
part of our December Family Night activities. This year’s families will be clients
of Families First. More details TBA.
Rector’s Discretionary Account: Please consider
making a contribution to the Rector’s Discretionary
Account to assist our neighbors needing help with
power bills in the coming cold weather. You may place your donation in the small brown envelopes in
the pew. If you write a check, please make a note on
the memo line indicating that you want your funds to go to the Discretionary Account. For either a cash or
check contribution, mark the appropriate box on the
front of the envelope. Gift cards ($10) for gas money
are also welcome.
historical and spiritual themes of the lyrics and music of the
featured spiritual. The four spirituals will be: 11/5 “Mary Had a Baby”, 11/12 “Rise Up Shepherd and Follow”, 12/3 “Children,
Go Where I Send Thee”, and 12/10 “Go Tell It on the Mountain”.
Results of the Annual Parish Meeting Voting: The following persons were elected to serve on vestry for 3-year terms beginning Jan. 2014:
Paula Blanchard and Alice Murphy
The following will represent us at Diocesan Convention, Feb. 2015:
Bill & Kay Horne (delegates), Paula Blanchard (alternate).
Community Events Plans are underway for our annual Holiday Bake Sale, Saturday, November 22 from
9 AM to 1PM. The next organizational meeting is scheduled for November 9 after the Sunday services.
We need volunteers to make soup, frozen casseroles, and tons of baked goods. Recipes are available if you need help with ideas. We also appreciate a few strong folks to help set up tables on Friday November 21
and to clean up on Saturday afternoon, November 22. For information, contact co-chairs Elsie Campbell and
Paula Blanchard.
Frozen Bale Sale Items: If you have prepared frozen soup, chili, or casseroles for the Bake Sale, please label and store
them in the kitchen chest freeze. Selected crafts also will be offered for sale. For more information, contact Paula Blanchard.
Church Growth and Mission Results of our Stewardship campaign so far: number of pledges 28; amount pledged $97,224. This is an increase in the number of pledges made (Thank you for your commitment!); however it is also a DECREASE of over $20,000 in the
amount pledged from the previous year and over $30,000 below what is needed for 2015. Because of the precarious
financial situation, the vestry and treasurer will make quarterly reports concerning the parish’s financial status.
Please be sure to thank Dr. Ray Thigpen once again for his leadership in our Stewardship Campaign and Connie Ghent, our
Treasurer, for her hard work on the budget preparation.
Treasurer’s Request - 2014 PLEDGE PAYMENTS
As we get closer to the end of this year, please note that I will be closing the financial records’ books for the 2014
fiscal year on January 1, 2015. Please note that any contributions you want posted to your 2014 pledge record
must have a December 2014 date on them and be received no later than January 1, 2015. Many Thanks.
