2014 EDITION

Dear People of Grace:

One of the Conferences I try to attend every year is Willow Creek Church’s Global Leadership Summit that attracts over 190,000 Christian leaders every year around the world at hundreds of satellite sites. I recently attended the Summit for my tenth time in August. The Summit is now in its 20th year started from a vision by Bill Hybels to help Christians to grow in their leadership. The Summit features leading voices in church, business, and society. Louie Giglio closed the 2014 Summit with his talk. Louie Giglio is the founder of the Passion Movement that unites thousands of college students in events around the world and the pastor of Passion City Church in Atlanta. He is also the author of several books and several popular praise songs. Here are some thoughts from Louie Giglio from the closing session of the 2014 Summit:

Reflecting on “the summit.” “What is your mountain?” What are the heights you want to attend? Who do you want to take with you? A lot of times I don’t know what I’m doing, but I’m not going to let that keep God from doing something great! Sometimes you’re just trying to lead%but you just – don’t – know – what – to – do. You don’t have to know everything about getting up the mountain ahead of you to know how to take the next step.

1. Life is short. Most people don’t feel a great sense of urgency about the great things of life. What is it that God wants you to accomplish in this life?

2. God is big. The entirety of life is about the fame and the glory of the person of Jesus Christ. Knowing it’s all about him is the most important thing I can know about life. 3. Take the next step. Whatever your next step is, you can do it. But you can’t unless God does it in you.

The Passion Movement was born out of a dark season in Louie’s life (the death of his father). In 1964 Louie’s dad made the Chick-fil-a logo. In Jan 2014 Louie spoke to 64,000 students at the Passion Conference in Atlanta which was on top of the Chick-fil-a logo on the field because of a football game a few days before.

Humility is what makes great leaders.

God’s grace is sufficient for you. In our weakness, WE are made strong.

Good words – Thanks, Louie! How Great Is Our God!

I love being your Pastor!

Pastor Jim

Our middle school and high school students will meet every week on Sunday evenings for fun, discipleship, and worship. We also have several monthly events planned that are sure to be instrumental in building the faith of our youth. There are a few fundraisers planned and another exciting mission experiences as well. There will be a Confirmation class beginning in the Spring for students in 8th grade or older. If anyone is interested in helping out as an adult mentor please let me know. One of the ways we build youth ministry is with volunteers who give of their time to work with our students. I would also like to invite any student who is now in 6th grade or older to join us. On behalf of all the families that went to Georgia for the mission experience, I would like to again, thank the members of the congregation for all the support we received. The prayers and donations and the participation in our fundraisers were greatly appreciated. We would not have been able to do this without you. God has blessed others through your hands. It was such a wonderful experience for our youth and their families. I was so pleased with how our church came together and made this all possible. We are so blessed. I would like to thank Pastor Jim and Diane Bender for helping us make the practical and financial decisions on where to serve as missionaries this year. Their leadership and diligence led us to the place God wanted us to serve.

Staff Change

Katrina Cook has been given a new title along with additional responsibilities – “Office Manager” effective August 1. Katrina will continue with her responsibilities in the role as church secretary but also be responsible for managing the building and grounds of our church along with personnel functions. Volunteers will continued to be utilized in the church office in the mornings and afternoons.

I have been blessed to be the Church Secretary at Grace since October 2002. I am excited to be offered the opportunity to expand my position and start my new role as Office Manager. My husband Roy and I both transferred to Venice in 1992 and were married here in Venice 21 years ago. We became members of Grace in November 1998, our daughters Chrissy and Virginia (JJ) grew up at Grace and joined through confirmation in 2009 & 2011. Chrissy is starting her sophomore year of college at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers and Virginia will be starting her freshman year at Florida State University in Tallahassee. You may not know that I grew up just a few counties north in Clearwater or that I was a resident at the Florida United Methodist Children’s home in Enterprise Florida for little over a year. I have an AA degree in Psychology, love rollercoasters, cars, jet skiing, RVing, designing/renovating houses and watching movies with my family. Blessings! Katrina

MINISTRY FAIR ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28

The Goal: We want every active disciple here at Grace to have a Ministry & a Mission –

Ministry in the Church & Mission in the World. This month we are focusing on Ministry in the Church. On Sunday morning on September 28, we want to help you select a ministry within the Body of Christ here at Grace United Methodist Church. We invite you to come to the Ministry Fair in Punch Hall before or after the worship services. We will have many examples of ministry within Grace Church and will help you get connected in a ministry. Imagine what God can do through us in Grace Church if every active disciple was involved in a ministry! To God Be The Glory! Plan to be present on September 28 for the Ministry Fair. (Note: Future steps in our Discipleship Path will be a

Mission and a Grace Group.)

Happy September - time for our traditional music ensembles to resume regular rehearsals. The Chancel Choir will begin gathering for rehearsal on Wednesday, the 3rd of September, at 6:30 in the choir room. GraceTones Handbell Ensemble will crank back up on Tuesday, September 23, at 5:30. Between those dates, our annual Church-Wide Music Department, back-to-choir, covered dish dinner will take place. This event has been a huge success in past years so we're expecting nothing less this year. Everybody who currently makes music at Grace UMC, and all who are interested in becoming a member of one of our music groups is invited. On Thursday, September 18, we'll begin gathering in Punch Hall around 5:00, and dinner will be begin at 5:30. All we ask is that you let me know you'll be joining us, how many will be in your party, and what dish you'll be bringing to share. Send an email to me at: [email protected] or call the church office to leave a message: 488-1374. Let's try for a record number of at-tendees this year. Hope to see you there!

On a personal note . . . on the third Sunday of this past August, I began my 14th year as organist here at Grace Church. It's hard to believe that so much time has transpired, but you know what they say . . . "Time flies when you're having a good time!" I cannot imagine a job for me any more wonderful than my association with Grace United Methodist Church on the Island in Venice has been. My sincere thanks to all the good people of God here at GUMC who have supported my music ministry over the years and who have helped nurture me in my Christian growth. I am ever grateful!

I remain your humble village organist, Gene Hodges

Interested in volunteering at Grace but you work during the week or have a full schedule weekdays? We have a great ministry volunteer opportunity! Our Sunday pick up and take home ministry is a great outreach to our homebound and shut-ins. This ministry enables them to come to church to worship God with their fellow Christians in faith. This ministry uses the Grace Van, so no special license is required. You can sign up for either a pick up run, take home run or both. If you are only available certain months, we are totally open and flexible with your schedule! If you are interested in volunteering in this ministry outreach please give Trina a call in the church office 488-1374.

name , year of birth and year of death. Money received

from the purchase in excess of memorial bricks cost will

be used for the continued maintenance and upkeep of

the Memorial Garden and Walkway.

Orders for bricks will be batched in increments of no

In the Hospital?

If you or a loved one goes into the hospital, please call the church office and notify us. Clergy no longer have access to the patient listing that lists patients by local churches and denominations. This means that our church and Pastor Jim will not know if one of our church family is in one of the hospitals unless someone calls the church office and notifies us. Pastor Jim and others visits the hospitals Monday through Friday, and on the weekends and in emergencies. It is now important to call the church office at 941.488.1374 if you, a family member, or a friend is admitted to the hospital, We would like to know for visitations and prayers. Thank you for your help.

Homebound Ministry

We sometimes hear through casual comments of church members who are in assisted living, rehabilitation, or are home bound. Then it begs the question: how many are there that we don’t know about? Please, if you know of someone in assisted living, rehabilitation or homebound (even if they have a caregiver), please call the church office with their name and location. We want to make sure that we are not missing anyone and we want to do a better job in reaching out to our homebound members.

Thank you for your assistance.

Whew! We survived the beginning of a new year. We are off to a good start with some new fun classes and activities for our preschool children. In addition to Spanish, Dance, Gymnastics, Chapel and Music we have a new Science class for our 4 year old children and a re-invented Discovery Center and Nature Center. Stop over and visit – we’d love to show them to you! Ident-a-Kid will be at the preschool on September 10 & 11. This is a service that provides identification cards with your child’s photo and information that law enforcement officers would need in case of an emergency. Church families are welcome to bring their children over. Call preschool for times. Remember this year’s auction will be held on November 8 at Plantation G&CC. The theme this year will be “Evening Under the Big Top”. Tickets are $50 pp or $85 per couple. We are also looking for sponsorships or any donation to the auction (items or services) so if you have a business that would like to support our preschool at this great event – we’d love to hear from you! Finally we would like to express a great big THANK YOU to Gene Stover and his little band of community service helpers. They painted classrooms and hallways; they cleaned lanais and kitchens and worked on our playground to help get us ready for the new school year. We are forever grateful for their help. Another big THANK YOU to Frank Hall our church custodian who has put together, taken apart, disposed of trash and been a huge help getting us ready for school.
