Grace United Methodist Church NEWSCASTER June/July 2011 Edition Meetings The Appointive Process Every local church needs a pastor. The United Methodist Church has a unique way of matching pastors and congregations. Rather than local churches hiring and firing their own pastors-as in some denominations-United Methodist bishops and their cabinet (made up of the 9 district superintendents) appoint pastors to serve in local churches and other ministry settings. One advantage to this process is that a local church never has to go without a pastor. Likewise, a pastor (specifically, a full member of an annual conference in good standing) never goes without a setting for ministry. Pastors here in Florida are members of the Florida Conference, which means we can serve churches from Key West to Jacksonville to Chattahoochee (60 miles west of Tallahassee). The primary goal of the appointment system is to match the gifts and graces of a particular pastor to the ministry needs of a particular congregation at a particular time. The itinerant system, where pastors move from one appointment to another, dates back to American frontier days when circuit riding preachers traveled on horseback from town to town. At that time, bishops often matched preachers to circuits four times a year. Now bishops typically fix appointments once a year, at the end of annual conference. As pastors in the United Methodist Church we agree to participate in the itinerate process. Many ask how a pastor and their family can stand this process. Let me assure you that while moves are always difficult there are also many blessings. We have the opportunity to live in different parts of our beautiful state, serve very different churches, become involved in various communities and make a lot of friends. Each ministry setting has had its own special blessing. As we make our preparation to say good bye, it is with great sadness. However, there is much anticipation to see how God will work in our new appointment. Here at Grace you will have a unique experience as Tom who is currently the associate pastor will move into the lead pastor position. While you will not have to meet a new pastor, I hope you will remember that Tom is moving into a new role that, against the backdrop of a staffing change from two ordained clergy to one. I hope that as Tom prepares to make a change here at Grace that you will pray for him and Ginny. I also covet your prayers for my family as we pack and move to a new ministry setting. Thank you for loving us and we have loved you, Jay and Eileen JUNE Trustee Committee Meeting Monday, June 13 at 7PM in the Library Church Council Meeting Monday, June 20 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel Finance Committee Meeting Tuesday, June 21 at 8:00AM in the Library Staff Parish Committee Meeting Tuesday, June 27 at 5:00 PM in the Parlor Grace Reading Fellowship Tuesday, June 28 at 10:00AM in the Parlor B JULY Trustee Committee Meeting Monday, July 11 at 7PM in the Library Church Council Meeting TBA Finance Committee Meeting Tuesday, July 19 at 8:00AM in the Library Staff Parish Committee Meeting Tuesday, July 19 at 5:00 PM in the Parlor Grace Reading Fellowship Tuesday, July 26 at 10:00AM in the Parlor B

Meetings

The Appointive Process

Every local church needs a pastor. The primary goal of the appointment system is to match the gifts and graces of a particular pastor to the ministry needs of a particular congregation at a particular time. The itinerant system, where pastors move from one appointment to another, dates back to American frontier days when circuit riding preachers traveled on horseback from town to town. As pastors in the United Methodist Church we agree to participate in the itinerate process. Many ask how a pastor and their family can stand this process. Let me assure you that while moves are always difficult there are also many blessings. Summer Office Hours June—August

Monday—Thursday 9AM to 4PM Friday 9 AM to Noon

Thank you from Tyler Rogers for the

Grace UMW Scholarship. It will greatly help with expenses toward my education

at State College of Florida and I appreciate it. Tyler is the son of Bev Rogers

and the late Dave Rogers.

If I ever questioned why I stayed at my job for 32 years, Sunday April 10th was the answer. I have loved

every minute of working at Grace and the reason for this is all the wonderful people I have met and worked

with all these years. I want to thank everyone for making my retirement special. My memories will be

cherished forever. ....... Linda

We have survived another school year – kidding! We had an awesome year with our children and our summer is shap-

ing up to be even better!

First however our Graduation and Spring Concert was a huge success. We had a very large crowd attend and the children performed beautifully. And then they sang in church! What an awesome example of the work that our stu-

dents and teachers do each and every day. A great big thank you to Carol Erb and Liz VanBuren for providing the direction and piano playing for us all year long!

Summer session begins on June 6th with lots of field trips, water play and good ole summer time fun!

Getting ready for the fall session, our Parent Meeting will be held on August 17th and our Open House will be on Au-

gust 19th. Then we hit the ground running on August 22nd.

Have a great summer – we’ll see you in the fall.
