RUMMAGE SALE
All You Will Ever Want to Know About Grace’s Attic!
This is an all-church mission project in which our community of faith ministers to those in the community
where we worship (remember Pastor Kevin’s two and a half mile radius?). We need everyone’s help and there
are plenty of areas in which you can use your given talents. Sign-up sheets for volunteers are available in
the narthex. Here are the details:
The sale dates: Wednesday, August 17th – 8:00 a.m. -6:00 p.m.
Thursday, August 18th - 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Friday, August 19th – 8:00 a.m. - noon
When and how we can use your help:
Wednesday, August 10th, from 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.: This is a change from the original date. Set up
clothing racks and tables in fellowship hall, move church items from the rooms we are using for security
and move some donated items to fellowship hall from storage areas. Since this is our first donation day,
we need volunteers to accept and process donations.
Thursday, August 11th: Drop-off is from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Accept and process donations.
Saturday, August 13th: Drop-off is from 9:00 a.m. - noon. Accept and process donations. Begin organiz-
ing all rooms.
Sunday, August 14th: Drop-off is from 8:00 a.m. - 2:00. pm. This is expected to be our busiest day
and we need extra help. We will continue to organize.
Monday, August 15th: This is also a change. We need extra help! It is still a drop-off day from 9:00
a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; but the focus will be on organizing and considering prices for items which are not group
-priced. Here’s the change. We do not have enough tables, so Glendale UMC is leading us some, but they
are not available until after the Ruby’s Pantry distribution. Therefore, we need volunteers about 6:30
p.m. to rearrange the tables we have, add the new ones and move some tables to the hallway and nar-
thex. It is essential that this be done Monday, because we have only one day of full facility use before
the sale.
Tuesday, August 16th: Drop-off is 9:00 a.m. - noon only. We will process final donations, price, put up
signs and set up the cashier station. This requires everyone who can possibly come.
Wednesday - Friday, August 17th - 19th. On sale days, we need volunteers to greet, distribute price lists,
direct customers to the proper areas, answer questions, reorganize and straighten, cashier, bag, carry
out heavy items and monitor the areas where the public is. Even though we have scheduled “shifts” for
your convenience, please come any time you can for as long as you can.
As you contemplate your donations, keep in mind that we cannot accept electronics, large furniture, plastic
baby items such as teethers, bottles or pacifiers, or regular books. Children’s books are fine.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Nancy Milne.

JOY is the wild story of
a family across four
generations centered on
the girl who becomes
the woman who founds
a business dynasty and
becomes a matriarch in her own right. Betray-
al, treachery, the loss of innocence and the
scars of love, pave the road in this intense
emotional and human comedy about becoming
a true boss of family and enterprise facing a
world of unforgiving commerce. Allies become
adversaries and adversaries become allies,
both inside and outside the family, as Joy’s
inner life and fierce imagination carry her
through the storm she faces.

Why I Serve - By Bethany Rinn
In college, I thought that I was being called to the
ministry. I started the discernment process and joined
the pre-seminary group at my school. I went to a small
United Methodist university where I was an active
member of puppet ministry, worship design, and gospel
ensemble. I gave the first student sermon that the
school had.
About a year into the discernment process, I realized
that God was calling me, as he calls each and every one
of us, to give of myself, my time, and talents, but not
into ordained ministry. I'm still not sure what I want
to be when I grow up, and will maybe never figure that
out. I do know though that I am being called every
day to serve God and my neighbor regardless of my
career.

Dear Friends,
What a wonderful Vacation Bible School. I think I have enjoyed this year’s program as much as ever. The chil-
dren, about 35, and volunteers all seemed to have a great time of singing, learning, playing, praying, and walking
on water (Honest, we really did!). The kids made sandwiches for Simpson shelter and raised money to buy a new
slide for our nursery. I want to thank all of the many volunteers who helped in so many ways to make this year’s
VBS a great success. From cutting the grass, preparing meals, generously donating food, money and supplies,
youth helpers, teachers, those who helped to set up and those who helped to clean up, and so many others. You
are GREAT and very much APPRECIATED!
I do want to give a special thanks to Anna Kjesbo who put in many hours and a lot of effort before, during and
after VBS to recruit volunteers, order and gather supplies, publicize, organize, and strategize so that every-
thing ran smoothly. It was a big job, and Anna did it wonderfully, again. On behalf of all of us, thank you.
On another subject, I would like to invite all of you to read and reflect regularly over the next several weeks on
Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-16. As we prepare, this fall, to begin looking at the next steps in our shared journey as
Grace UMC, and how we will reach out to the people of our neighborhood, I would ask you to consider a few
questions:
* What is the nature and mission of the Church?
* What does it mean to be the body of Christ?
* What is God’s vision for the Church? For Grace Church?
* What does the community need from Grace Church?
Your prayerful reflection on these questions will be an important part of our looking toward our future in minis-
try together as Grace UMC.
There is still plenty of summer ahead, my friends. Please take time to enjoy it, but stop in from time to time.
We do miss you when you’re gone.
Blessings,
Pastor Kevin
Greetings Grace UMC! I am so excited to begin my ministry in Burnsville with all of you. My family first
met Kevin and Kathy Schill at Christ United Methodist Church in Rochester while Pastor Kevin was serving
as an associate minister. I am delighted to have this opportunity to work with him.
I would like to tell you a little about myself. I am a pastor’s daughter. I have lived in Georgia, South
Carolina, Missouri, various places in Texas, Arkansas and for the last 15 years, Minnesota. I met my hus-
band Ricardo while in Seminary in Texas. My husband is the Supervisory Chaplain at the Federal Medical
Center in Rochester and the pastor of two little Methodist Churches; Bethlehem UMC in Hammond and
Douglas UMC. We have two daughters: Rosalia lives in St Louis and Rosa Lin is attending Drury Universi-
ty. I can’t wait to meet all of you and help you realize God’s vision for Grace church in this rich, fertile
mission field.
Soli Deo Gloria,
Rosalie Alcoser

BOOK CLUB
Timely and timeless, The Secret Wisdom of the Earth by Christopher Scot-
ton is a dramatic and deeply moving novel about an act of violence in a small,
Southern town and the repercussions that will forever change a young man's
view of human cruelty and compassion.
After seeing the death of his younger brother in a terrible home accident,
14-year old Kevin and his grieving mother are sent for the summer to live
with Kevin's grandfather. In this peeled-paint coal town deep in Appalachia,
Kevin quickly falls in with a half-wild hollow kid named Buzzy Fink who
schools him in the mysteries and magnificence of the woods. The events of
this fateful summer will affect the entire town. 5
