Journeys With Joel

What do you do when a friend may die?

32 Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured in a great con-flict full of suffering. 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. 34 You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. 35 So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. 36 You need to perse-vere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. Hebrews 10:32-35 NIV

Since college Rev. Donna has been good “long distance” friends with one of her college room-mates, Ann. Ann lives in Dayton Ohio. She has had Cystic Fibrosis for most of her life. On several occa-sions Ann nearly died due to CF and its complications. Her husband Jon is a true believer in the healing power of Christ. Time and time again he has been given the word that Ann’s death was immanent. Jon continued to pray and involve others in prayer. He would not give up and there has been miracle after miracle. Rev. Donna plays the role of Pastor-Friend for Ann. She is someone Ann can confide in and receive unconditional love and support. Ann credits Rev. Donna with leading her to Christ. Donna is also someone the whole family feels they can turn to with their hopes and fears. Rev. Donna’s chronic fatigue has been acting up the last few weeks. It is often amplified by mold allergies, especially during the har-vest season. These allergies led to a nasty sinus infection. Rev. Donna has been mostly bed-ridden for the last few days. I got this text from Donna this morning:

“I won’t make it to Ohio in time. Jon just called – doctor said she has multiple organ failures and don’t give her very many days. He is remaining brave and still aware that a miracle could happen, but the confusion is overwhelming for him. It broke my heart to hear his breaking heart.”

So what do you do? Of course we will try to figure a way to get Donna there if her health will al-low. But, the scripture at the top of the page challenges us with the examples of those who suffered, en-dured, persevered and remained strong “Confident” in their faith. Rev. Donna and I are still praying for a miracle for Ann. This is real life stuff we all have to deal with. Hebrews 10:32-35 reminds us that in the midst of the pain, the struggle, the hurt, and the confusion, God is there. What ever happens, God is there. God has already won the victory. On the other side of the persecution and pain is the promise for those who persevere and remain confident in their faith. The rewards are coming in this life and far more in the next. That I believe!

Pray for John and Ann, their family, and anyone else you may know who is struggling right now. Remain confident, and when you can’t, remember the church is here to be confident for you when doubt

and pain would steal your hope. You are not alone. The promise is coming!

It is a privilege to be your pastor,

Pastor Joel

P. S. Precious Ann’s Cystic Fibrosis kept her from ever really being able to dance. Since about 9:30 P.M. Wednesday September 21, Ann has been dancing with Jesus!

Grace Notes

The Rev. Frank Beard, pastor of Castleton United Methodist Church in Indi-

anapolis, has been elected as a United Methodist bishop by delegates at the

North Central Jurisdictional Conference.

Beard was elected July 13 at the jurisdiction’s quadrennial meeting in Peo-

ria, Illinois.

Beard told delegates that in 1968, he was a “snotty-nosed” kid playing

around a United Methodist church when its members invited him for cookies

and Kool-Aid — and then provided a scholarship so he could attend United

Methodist Church camp.

“That little Methodist Church took me under their wing,” he said. “In 1968,

it wasn’t popular for white churches to invite little black boys to be part of

their congregation.” Beard said that church blessed him, and God called him

to the glorious task of preaching the good news.

Beard was the second bishop elected by the delegates, an equal number of United Methodist clergy and

laity, from the nine states that form the North Central Jurisdiction. The assignments of bishops for the

next four years will be announced later in the week. His four-year term of service begins Sept. 1.

Beard has served Castleton United Methodist since 2012. He was previously superintendent of the Ko-

komo District 2004-2012. He has been vice chair of the General Commission on General Conference

since 2004 and a member of the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry since 2012.

He is a five-time General Conference delegate and a six-time Jurisdictional Conference delegate. He is a

graduate of Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky.

A consecration service for the four new bishops will be held July 16. The ceremony can be watched live

at the North Central Jurisdiction’s website.

Within the United States, local United Methodist churches are organized into increasingly larger

groups: numerous districts, dozens of annual conferences and five jurisdictions (regions). Nine active

bishops now lead the 11 annual conferences that form the North Central Jurisdiction.

A United Methodist bishop is elected for life. Typically, a bishop will serve in a specific annual confer-

ence for eight years. The United Methodist Book of Discipline, the denomination’s law book, directs each

bishop to “guard the faith, order, liturgy, doctrine, and discipline of the Church” and to “lead all persons

entrusted to their oversight in worship, in the celebration of the sacraments, and in their mission of wit-

ness and service in the world.” Bishops also are to be “prophetic voices and courageous leaders in the

cause of justice for all people.”

The states represented in this jurisdiction are: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Da-

kota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

NEW BISHOP ELECTED!

Bishop Beard will be at Grace UMC.

Leave your calendars open for

Sunday, November 20th!

Current Events

The Marigold Festival Potato Bar is always an event that keeps us occupied at the beginning of Septem-ber! We had to adjust a few things this year due to the rain, but overall it turned out to be another suc-cessful fundraiser for our mission trip. Thank you for your support, we hope you enjoyed the potatoes! Other than that, we have mostly been getting back into the swing of meeting each Wednesday with our normal Radical schedule. Our students are adapting to their new school schedule and extracurriculars which keeps them very busy! We are blessed to have a committed group who make the effort to be here for 2 hours once each week.

What are we learning?

On Wednesday nights we began a new topic to start the school year. Recognizing that reading the Bible and getting a lot out of it can be intimidating, even difficult for many of our students, we wanted to spend some time helping them know how they can best read it and apply it to their lives. This meant talking about the value of finding the author's intended meaning, the context, and specifically the cultural con-text of the Bible. This is an important tool for them to have as they go through life as a Christ-follower. For Sunday school, we have been continuing our look at stories found in the Gospels that each of the 4 gospel writers offer their perspective on. We have been diving into the way each wrote them, comparing and contrasting to get the most out of each story and see a fuller picture of who Jesus was.

Coming Up

Our annual See You at the Pole Youth prayer gathering and youth rally will be on September 28th! Our students will gather for prayer at their schools' flagpoles in the morning and then meet for a time of wor-ship and fun, as George Moss comes to lead a free concert for students in the area. Please be praying for our students, their schools, and our community on this day that God is glorified and Christ is made known! October will be a busy month, as we will be joining other youth groups for a night of worship and equipping on October 12th. We will also have a special retreat for our Sr. High Girls called, Treasured the weekend of October 21-22 where we will take a look at God's view of them and His design for relation-ships. Our group will also have a Wednesday meeting just for fun on October 28th where we will enjoy the fall season together and have a Halloween-themed party hosted by the Wymans. Any and all prayers are appreciated, as we want all that we do to be God-directed and glorifying, so please cover all that we do in prayer!

Christian Education News

It is Fall and our Education Program is underway. Our teachers are wonderful! Thank you especially to the teachers in

our children’s programs: Sunday School: Katelyn Tassart, Tanya Bruns, Sherie Garthaus, Tori Hunt, Ed Betzelberger;

Nursery: Marcia Gazza and Rachel Knight; TLC: Jan Darnell, Fran Stroehmer, Tammy Presley, and Vera Byrd; and

JAMtime: Beth Fowler, Kathy Towne, Trela Caine, Fred Block and Lisa McKenzie. Thanks also to those who have

volunteered to make meals for JAMtime and Radical this year (and to Michelle Hunt and Tammy Presley who made our

first dinner). More volunteers are still needed to make and serve dinners.

We have invited area schoolchildren to attend our “trunk or treat”. This is an opportunity to enjoy the fall season with

the children of the church, and to reach out to other children and their families, and letting them know they are welcome

at Grace. We need your help! If you are able to be here to provide candy, or to pass out candy and appreciate the chil-

dren in their costumes, please be in the church parking lot at 2:30 on Saturday, October 29.

TLC (time to Love Children – our Mom’s Morning Out program) is underway. We have openings in the 2 year old

class. If you know of any families with two year olds who might be interested in participating in the program, please

ask them to contact me.

Our JAMtime children are starting off the year learning about the early leaders in the Methodist church, and life in the

early 18th century.

Best wishes for a healthy fall!

GUMC’s SNACK PACK INFORMATION

On behalf of the Willow School staff and many Willow stu-dents and their families, I want to sincerely thank you for your ongoing support for the Willow School Snack Pack program. Grace United Methodist Church’s partnership with this school’s program has benefited hundreds of stu-dents through the past few years (Willow School has over 70% low income families based upon free/reduced lunch status). Each week, students who are signed up receive a Snack Pack with 4-6 food items to eat over the weekend. It may not seem important until we realize that most of these qualifying students eat both breakfast and lunch at school every day and may not have much food at home for the weekends. This program several years ago, our congregation has been VERY generous with financial donations and bringing supplies in to put in the snack packs. GUMC’s Snack Pack program is one of a few in town that is self-sustaining with-out received outside donations, and that is because of YOU and your donations! A few years ago when I was the principal there, Willow’s PTA purchased the supplies for one week and the cost was over $130.00. This program will supply snack packs 33 weeks this year; even at the $130/week, that amounts to $4,300.00. We are also very blessed because our Food Pantry program also gives many snack foods to the Snack Pack Program. Last spring, First United Methodist Church reached out to include our church with a Golf Outing/Fundraiser that was held at Mashies’ in July. Thank you very much to all of you who supported that event by either playing golf, purchasing meals, volunteering to help at the event, donating and/or bidding on the silent auction and raffle items. This collabo-rative event between our two sister churches was special in many ways, and your support was greatly appreciated! You are welcome to help pack the snack sacks anytime; the schedules are available near the Grace Notes and oth-er handouts. Alternating on Wednesdays in the Hospitality area, the Jam Time Youth pack at 5:00 p.m.; Radical Youth pack at 5:45 p.m., and Wednesday morning Bible Study members pack at 9:10 a.m. The Journey Sunday School members pack on Sunday mornings at 9:15 in the gym. Please feel free to join us at any of these times! Please call me if you have any questions, ideas, or need more information. God bless all of you for helping hun-dreds of potentially hungry children in our town. Loving and helping children is another mission from Jesus!

Gloria Ranney, 353-3102

SNACK PACK ANNOUNCEMENT For several years we have had a pilot partnership with the District 108 under the umbrella of the Pekin Outreach Initia-tive, by providing nutritious snacks for the school children who live within the federal poverty guidelines. The snack packs will be sent home with the children at the end of each school week to assure them food throughout the weekend. These are simple, yet nutritious snacks that will represent the difference between a happy and a hungry belly for a child. Please consider purchasing one or more of these items and deliver your donations to the designated snack pack basket located in Grace’s Hospitality Area.

Snack Pack Donation List individually wrapped peanut butter or cheese sandwich crackers

individually wrapped cookies

granola bar

individual fruit or applesauce cups

individual fruit snacks

pudding cups

jello cups

individual raisin packs

individual cereal cups

pop tarts

cereal bars

drink/juice boxes

Donations accepted anytime.

The snack packs will include 4-6 of these items. Most of

the above items can be purchased at Dollar Tree. The packages have 4-10 items in them, and the cost of each package runs about $1.00.

Costco & Sam’s Club also has large quantities in very economical packs that will provide for more students, at less cost per student. This is a perfect opportunity for a group to collectively donate a larger quantity.

Grace UMC will assemble the snack pack bags for the students. If you would like to join us in helping to make the bags, please contact me, but there will also be a schedule coming out for the snack pack assem-bly. We welcome any group or individual who would like to join us.

In the Name of Jesus Christ who loves All Children,

Snack Pack Chair: Gloria Ranney

One hundred percent of the money raised will be given to those worthwhile charities. The money will be used exclusively for food.

The high participation in the monthly food pantry at Grace Church and Grace Cafe as well as the poor econo-my substantiates the need in our community to provide food for the hungry.

Walkers are encouraged to solicit donations from family members and friends. Walkers are asked to meet at the dug-out parking lot (south of the pavilion) prior to the walk.

Checks should be made payable to GRACE CHURCH HUNGER WALK.
