Dear Friends,

After Dean Shaw left in June for her promised three-month sabbatical, in my role as acting vice dean in her absence I was able to report that things were jogging along smoothly. We were concluding some key hires, there was a reprieve of a few months for “The Ribbons” through popular demand, the Year of Sustainability was underway, and the calendar was filling up with excellent events. Even The Forum was being planned after promising conversations with proposed guests.

When news of the Dean’s appointment to Stanford was announced, we rejoiced for her in this calling and set about coming to terms with our various reactions spanning surprise, uncertainty and optimism, as we looked to the future. We the Cathedral staff feel robust and energetic as we prepare for the appointment of the next Dean to succeed Jane Shaw, who has fostered so much in her almost four-year tenure here.

It is timely therefore to be writing an acting vice dean’s letter to you as I continue in this caretaking role while the search committee seeks a new Dean. After a year of retirements, organizational development and movements, it is with much satisfaction that I write to say that as of September 1, we have a fully staffed Chapter onboard, intent on managing the business of Grace Cathedral with great effectiveness.

A busy fall program of events is on the calendar: The Forum, events marking the Year of Sustainability spearheaded by food guru Bryant Terry, our Artist in Residence, and wonderful music events. In November we celebrate 50 years since the consecration of the Cathedral. The Christmas program is in place, and promises to be as excellent as always.

So it is business very much as usual here at the Cathedral. We are geared up. We of course includes all of you, each and every one of you who cares about Grace Cathedral. For in the way we say we are church, it is with a great sense of gratitude, affection and common purpose to serve in God’s kingdom, that we also say we are Grace Cathedral, united in its mission and vision.

GRACE CATHEDRAL TURNS 50 On November 20, 1964, the final phase of Grace Cathedral’s construction was completed and our Cathedral was consecrated with fanfare. Celebrate the Cathedral’s past, present and sustainable future with us on this special 50th anniversary:

ANNOUNCING: BRYANT TERRY, ARTIST IN RESIDENCE As part of our 2014 focus on food and sustainability, Bryant Terry joins us as this year’s Artist in Residence. Terry is an acclaimed chef, educator and author renowned for his activism to create a healthy, just and sustainable food system. He was a guest speaker at 2014 Carnivale.

ALL SOULS’ REQUIEM SERVICE SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 11 A.M. Come to remember those you love and yet see no longer at an All Souls’ Requiem service, which includes Mozart’s Requiem.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 3 P.M. Thousands of poppy petals cascade onto the main altar in this poignant and visually arresting service com-memorating those who have died in armed conflict.

ADVENT PROCESSION AND TEA SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 3 P.M. Led by the Choir of Men and Boys, we begin the new liturgical year with Advent lessons and carols. A festive tea will follow in the Chapter House dining room. More at gracecathedral.org/advent

WEEKLY WORSHIP SCHEDULE Our regular worship includes four services on Sundays — 8:30 a.m. Eucharist; 11 a.m. Choral Eucharist; 3 p.m. Choral Evensong and 6 p.m. Eucharist on the labyrinth — as well as Choral Evensong sung by our Choir of Men and Boys on Thursdays at 5:15 p.m.

The Rev. Elizabeth Grundy is Canon for Pastoral Care and Formation. She brings extensive experience with family, youth and children’s ministries from her years in the Diocese of Massachusetts at the parish and diocesan levels.

Greg Sondern, our new Canon Sacrist, comes to us with a wealth of relevant skills and experience, including most recently at the historic Swedenborgian Church of San Francisco, where he was responsible for facilities management.

The Rev. Canon Justin White, Canon Precentor, will organize worship at the Cathedral. For the past eight years he was Dean of Chapel at Winchester College, with close liturgical involvement at Winchester Cathedral.

A FOND FAREWELL

Early this fall, we wished a fond farewell to the Very Rev. Dr. Jane Shaw, eighth Dean of Grace Cathedral. Dean Shaw recently joined Stanford University as Dean for Religious Life. We are grateful for her leadership, culminating in four wonderful years of growth. In her farewell sermon on September 14, she reminded us that as Christians, we grow by looking outwards to friend and stranger alike. This outreach — an inspired welcome to the wider commu-nity — is central to her legacy, calling us to live Grace Cathedral’s mission in worship, education, service and the arts. We wish her every blessing in her new calling.

THE YEAR OF FOOD AND SUSTAINABILITY CONTINUES

Grace Cathedral progresses in its exploration of critical issues of sustainability at The Forum, in worship and through education and the arts.

Of special note: Environmental Defense Fund Climate Corps Fellow Benjamin Butterworth completed a ten-week study of the Cathedral’s energy systems and usage. It will be useful as we consider opportunities for greater efficiency and cost savings, from lighting to heating, for a more sustainable future. Our Seniors Program, Dinner with Grace and guest chefs have begun cooking in our newly-completed, modernized Chapter House Kitchen, a place for old friends and new to experience the preparation and sharing of healthy food.

As part of our 2014 focus on food and sustainability, we are honored to have Bryant Terry as our 2014 Artist in Residence. Terry, an acclaimed chef, educator and author renowned for his activism to create a healthy, just and sustainable food system, was our guest speaker at Carnivale. Terry’s mentor, noted Bay Area chef and author Alice Waters says, “Bryant Terry knows that good food should be an everyday right and not a privilege.”
