DISPATCH FROM MATERNITY LEAVE I've been on maternity leave for a few Sundays, and

I wanted to let you all know how our family is

doing. Our daughter Aletta Fontabel Smith was

born on June 10 at 10:45am. Delivery and recovery

have been much easier the second time around, so

we are very grateful.

In preparation for Aletta's birth, my family and two

priests (including Stan) came to the hospital to

pray. I also received the laying on of hands and

anointing with holy oil. Although I've anointed and

prayed with people in the hospital, I had never

been on the receiving end of these gifts of the

church before. The prayers, the reassuring hands,

and the anointing helped me to adopt a trusting

spirit, which I needed very much.

Because Zadok's birth had been so complicated,

Aletta's birth was a scheduled C-section. When I

entered the operating room, I started shaking

involuntarily because I was afraid. But as I recalled

the ceremony around my bedside, God was able to

answer that instinctive fear with a deeper sense of

peace.

The surgery went smoothly, and before long I was

holding our little girl. We named her Aletta

Fontabel after Josh's two grandmothers. They have

played a huge role in his life, and they are both still

living. We are planning a trip to visit them both in

Illinois sometime in August so that they can meet

their namesake.

Zadok (20 mos.) is really enjoying his baby sister.

He asks to hold her, and he goes looking for her

whenever he comes home from anywhere. He

watches her intently, hoping that she will sneeze,

which Zadok finds absolutely hilarious. When

Zadok touches his sister, he says "gentle, gentle."

We have had a lot of help for the first three weeks

from friends and family. Josh's mother and my

mother were both here for the birth, and they have

taken turns staying with us afterward. I still can't

really lift anything heavier than Aletta, so the extra

hands are a huge help. We've also had friends and

Grace folks bringing meals for us, which we

appreciate so much!

In fact, the biggest difference between the birth of

our son and the birth of our daughter has been our

connection to friends and to a church family.

Zadok was born less than three months after we

moved to Fayetteville, so we didn't have many

people to lean on. I loved that time of becoming a

new family, but I am also so grateful that this time

we have a real community of support around us.

So, in addition to becoming a family in the past two

years, it turns out that we have been welcomed

into a community as well. We're feeling so very

blessed.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? by Jan Wubbena In recent months I have focused on the importance of the content of the hymn texts that we sing. Even

though I have said nothing about the writers of hymn texts, one does not study hymnody

and not find names that pop up repeatedly. You may find the index of authors, translators, and sources in

the back of the hymnal (p. 936) to be of interest. Who has the highest number of credits in The Hymnal

1982? The answer may surprise you. No, it’s not Charles Wesley, Isaac Watts, nor that very active fellow,

Anonymous. Take a look – I’m not telling.

This month I’m going to move over to the other side of the hymn coin, the music. Turn to any hymn in our

hymnal and you will find the credits below each hymn, first for the text, then for the music. The first piece

of information listed about the latter is a word or words in italics. That is the name of the hymn tune. Did

you know that hymn tunes have names independent of the hymn texts with which they are commonly

associated?

Church musicians learn the names of the tunes and are as conversant with them as they are with hymn

texts. One parish may sing “All hail the power of Jesus’ Name” to the tune Coronation, and another to the

tune Miles Lane. (Which do we use? Turn to Hymns 450 and 451 and figure it out!) In the Easter season

recently concluded we sang “The King of love my shepherd” twice, once to St. Columba (Hymn 645), once

to Dominus regit me (Hymn 646). There are two versions of some hymn tunes, both versions sung to the

same hymn text (e.g., Ein feste Burg, “A mighty fortress,” Hymns 687 and 688).

When possible, I like to use hymn tune-based music for the prelude and postlude. You may have noted

that quite often the title listed in the service booklet is “Hymn-prelude on italicized word or phrase [Hymn

number].” The hymn number listed is always one of the five hymns we sing at the 11:15 service, but to

identify the text of that hymn you would have to turn to the referenced hymn in the hymnal, because the

title listed is that of the hymn tune, not that of the text that we will sing to that tune. Why? The piece of

organ music is based on a tune, not on a text sung to that tune.

In addition to the hymnal’s index of authors, translators, and sources, and the comparable index of

composers, arrangers, and sources (p. 943), there is an index of tune names (p. 949). You will note that

some tunes are used more than once. Already this year we have sung The Third Tune twice, once with the

text “I heard the voice of Jesus say” (Hymn 692), once with “To mock your reign, O dearest Lord” (Hymn

170).

You will also note that some tunes have more than one name. In many

hymnals the very familiar tune of “Amazing grace” is named Amazing

Grace; in The Hymnal 1982 it’s named New Britain (its original name,

before becoming so closely associated with John Newton’s text). In

anticipation of some confusion, both are listed in the index of tunes. If

you look first for the tune name Amazing Grace, you are told to “see: New

Britain.” I.e., the hymnal will “set you straight” with the officially sanctioned

Episcopal name for the tune and refuse to divulge the hymn number

unless you look under the “correct” name.

But sometimes our hymnal’s index doesn’t offer this help to

someone looking for a tune under a different tune name. In

many hymnals (I would guess it’s a majority) the tune we use

for “Fairest Lord Jesus” (Hymn 383) is Crusader’s Hymn. Our

hymnal doesn’t recognize that name at all – it’s St.

Elizabeth and that only. (Yes, I find these matters to be an

amusing slap-on-the-wrist .)

Interested? Stay tuned for the August column, the

subject of which will be the tune names themselves.

And in September you’ll learn about the series of digits

on the right margin, opposite the music credit on the

right margin.
