What to say when we pray?

Pastor Kris Garlick

Wednesday’s New York Times reported: a 3-year-old girl

survived the flood of Hurricane Harvey clinging to her

unresponsive mother, Colette Sulcer, 41, a nurse.

As she was recovering in a hospital in Beaumont, Texas, the little girl, Jordyn,

told a relative, “Mama was saying her prayers,”

Unfortunately, Colette Sulcer died. “It’s a tragedy,” said Antionette Logan,

“but it’s a miracle that Jordyn survived.”

Jordyn’s comment, “Mama was saying her prayers,” struck a chord with me.

I envisioned how horrific this event must have been; and, I pondered the thought of

all the prayers being offered this last week. Yet, how many people, like me, are at a

loss for words? I’m reminded of the song we sing:

“The Spirit intercedes for us with sighs to deep for words to express …”

God knows ... (Romans 8:27) He knows what’s in our hearts.

Last week, a friend of mine was in terrible motorcycle accident. The

experience was traumatic. As I held her dying body, I could not find the words for

prayer. So, I attempted to verbalize scripture. And when that collapsed - I had no

words. All I had was hope that the Spirit would intercede …

Sure enough, out of nowhere, a woman came running up to the accident and said,

“I’m a nurse. How can I help?” She brought Gwen back to life. Thank you, Jesus.

“The Spirit intercedes for us with sighs to deep for words to express …”

One week later, I was still somewhat shaken by the event when I was called

to visit a young lady who had just lost her mom — she died in a motorcycle accident.

We talked for some time. Then, this grieving daughter asked about God’s

presence and prayer. “How do I pray? I don’t even know what to say.”

Her friend jumped up and grabbed a book that she had picked up at a GLC Library

Book Sale. She opened the book to a random passage, yet the perfect passage.

Out of all the scripture printed, she turned right to a special verse that had terrific

meaning to her and her mom.

Struggling to find the words? Reach for the Word and pray scripture.

“Almighty God, (Phil. 4:7) May Your peace which surpasses all understanding, guard

our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus.”………………………………………..Amen.

TEXAS AND LOUISIANA FLOODING

The situation: After copious amounts of rainfall and several flash floods throughout the Louisiana-Texas area, thou-sands were left without power. Many families have found themselves displaced from their homes, and for some, multiple times. Our response: Through congregations, synods and disaster affili-ate organizations, Lutheran Disaster Response is assisting those who have been affected by the flooding. Lutheran Disaster Response’s coordinator is pre-sent, working with community leaders and officials planning the proper responses, particularly the long-term recovery efforts. The road to recovery is long, and we will be there to accompany those im-pacted through every phase of this disaster. Your gifts are needed to launch continue recovery efforts. What you can do: Pray: Continue to pray for the people affected by flood-ing. May God’s healing presence give them peace and hope in their time of need. Give: Gifts to Texas and Louisiana Flooding will be used to assist those directly impacted by the flooding until the response is complete. Go to: https://community.elca.org/USHurricaneRelief

The following members were present:

Carmen Selting, Bonnie Lange, Grant Rush, Rick Hultman and Pastor Kris. Guest, Brad Scott with Thrivent Financial.

Brad Scott talked about teaching kids how lucky they are and the needs of the homeless. How his son did a project in his class to collect for the homeless and the Cornerstone Rescue Mis-

sion in Rapid City is the closest shelter in the area. We would like to put together a list of needed items for homeless kids to put in the bulletin.

Items would be gathered and then put together in zip lock bags to hand out at the shelter. Pastor Kris will talk to the kids on September 13 about the project. October 15 would be the date to bring all the stuff.

Brad Scott talked about meeting with congregation after some Sunday about people's final wishes. That they should start thinking about this.

Rick Hultman and Grant Rush will talk to the council about doing this on November 12. He has a 5 Wishes pamphlet that he will use to discuss this with the congregation.

KBHB radio broadcast history – Rick Hultman is still working on this. He has talked with Margorite Kleven and Pastor Clevland and is gather information about their

An Education Program meeting was held on Wednesday, August 30th at 6:30pm. Those in attendance were Kent Kreutz, Heather Kreutz, Vicki Monahan, Pastor Kris Garlick, Andria Williams, Dadra Avery, Cindy Milek, Melissa Pankratz and Tessa Gunderson. The group discussed the process and timeline for handing out bibles to the kids in the congregation. It was determined that each September we would like to have a service where 3 year old or new young members would receive a

picture bible, then in 6th grade, kids would receive a second bible to use for confirmation. This September there would be more kids getting bibles as we would need to do some catch up for the kids who are older but who could still use the bibles. Pastor Kris said she would take our suggestion to Council for their approval. Next there was discussion regarding first Communion. It was determined that as a general rule first Communion would be taken by 5th graders or at parents discretion. Pastor Kris plans to hold a session for those kids who are interested in taking first Communion this October. Tessa gave a general overview of the plan for the Wednesday Kids Alive Program and asked for feedback. There was a consensus that Kids Alive would be split into 3 classes (4 year olds-Kindergarten, 1st – 2nd Grade, 3rd – 5th). The groups will all meet for singing/video at 5:00pm and then will break into their separate groups and go to classrooms until dismissal at 6:00. There were a number of people who volunteered to help teach per age group. Wednesday Night Kids Alive will start on September 13th. There was discussion around the necessity for two separate Sunday School classes, one for the Preschool/Kindergarteners as well as one for the older kids. It was determined that due to other Sunday obligations and therefore lack of attendance, the older kids would not have a separate class. Vicki will be holding her normal class along with help from Cindy and any older kids who would like to attend can come to that class as helpers. There was also the idea of having trivia sheets for the older kids to take to coffee fellowship to work on with congregation members. It was suggested that we have parents fill out registration/waiver forms at the start of the program this year. Forms will be printed and provided the first night of Kids Alive as well as posted online. It was also suggested that there be a sign in/out of kids for Wednesday Nights and Sunday School. Each class will work to monitor those kids coming and going to ensure the safety of all kids. Pastor Kris gave an update of the Thrivent project of providing kids hygiene care packages to the shelter in October. She will provide more information once it is available. Cindy brought up the idea of including Caraway Street periodically on Wednesday nights. We will work toward coordinating this as a possible monthly or bimonthly event. Heather said the Youth Group had not met yet, but that they would be doing so in the next week. It was determined that there would be a monthly education committee meeting in which Pastor will provide the theme for the following month and lesson plans can be set. This will also allow a chance for feedback as to what is/isn’t working so that we can continue to improve the kids program. The date for the next meeting will be emailed out to the committee once it is set.

This year's Sunday morning 'Journey with Jesus' will begin with a 'Pearl of Great Price' Treasure Hunt! We will meet in the Rose Room immediately after the worship service, for the first clue… Goodies and Treasures for everyone! Our regular Sunday morning 'Journey with Jesus' schedule starts 9/17/17. Each Sunday's journey will begin immediately after the worship service with 15 minutes of 'Joyful Noise' in the music room, on the basement level of the education wing, after which the group will embark on a weekly 'Journey with Jesus'

through Bible stories, games, trivia scavenger hunts, activities and craft projects. This journey/adventure will be similar to the one room country school concept, were all the kids come together for a Bible story/lesson and the older kids help the younger children with games, activities and projects. The older kids (3rd grade through 6th grade) will also have the opportunity to join the adults during part of the coffee fel-lowship, for fun and assistance with a weekly Bible Trivia scavenger hunt. See you there - Sunday morn-ings! 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
