Disposable Medical & Hygiene
Products
The DEVELOPMENT and AVAILABILITY of an increasing array of disposable items for use in the health professions have accelerated dramatically in recent years. In addition to the long–standing list of disposables such as disposable syringes, disposable vaginal speculum, disposable proctoscope and infection prevention kit.
By definition, a single–use disposable device is intended to be used on one patient and then discarded. A true disposable device is not intended to be cleaned and sterilized for re-use since it is not typically manufactured as easy–to–clean or heat–tolerant. Even as you continue to use more disposables in your practice, you might readily recall previous examples of similar items that were routinely used during treatment, then cleaned and sterilized before being re-used.
Designing single-use medical devices
True, user requirements drive product specifications, but there is more than that. Cost is a significant factor because most disposable products function only once. There is no potential to minimize costs with repeated use.
Current technology can help speed product development and keep costs down. And, the device must meet strict requirements set forth by the (FDA) Food and Drug Administration, as well as work reliably and consistently.
To create a high-quality product, designers must recognize and mitigate risks associated with disposable devices. Risks in this discussion fall into three categories: risk of design, risk of process, and risk of use.
A pragmatic approach towards single-use-disposable devices
Disinfection and decontamination including sterilization of devices take a lot of time. For the sake of convenience and hygiene, there are many sterile single-use-disposable supplies available for safe provision.
Grace Health Care marketed disposable syringes, disposable vaginal speculum, disposable proctoscope and infection prevention kit for health care providers.

Disposable Vaginal Speculum
Viginal Speculum is a diagnostic tool for investigating body cavities, a speculum allows entry into a body cavity. Speculum is intended for direct vision and allow the operator a direct vision of the area of interest and the possibility to introduce instruments for further interventions such as a biopsy.
Viginal Speculum is ready to use, disposable sterilized diagnostic tool to keep patient free from hospital and community acquired infections. Available in all sizes.
The Use of Disposable Vaginal Speculam in Improving Infection Control Study published in 28 February, 2006 VOL: 102, ISSUE: 09, PAGE NO: 53 Sarah Tattersall, RGN, DipHE, is infection control nurse, Salford Primary Care Trust
Adherence to infection control guidelines on the use and decontamination of medical and surgical devices and instruction. Adherence to infection control guidelines on the use and decontamination of medical and surgical devices and instruments is essential in minimizing the risk of transmission of infectious agents. Failure to do so can put patients at risk of cross-infection, health care providers at risk of litigation and individual practitioners at risk of being reported to their professional regulator for disciplinary proceedings. The latter could result in practitioners being removed from their professional register and unable to practice in the future.
Decontamination
Decontamination is the process by which reusable medical devices are made safe for further use by minimizing the risk of transmission of infectious agents. It involves a combination of cleaning, disinfection and sterilization. However, evidence suggests that primary care professionals often fail dec- Ontaminate their medical devices properly, citing conomic reasons for this failure. According to the MHRA (2000) Medicines and Healthcare products Regulation Agency, reprocessing single-use medical devices – usually for economic reasons - is a common Practice despite the fact that it increases infection risk to patients. However, Phillips (2000) found that some GPs were willing to put aside cost implications for the greater good of adhering to safe practice, and demonstrated that it is more cost-effective to purchase single-use vaginal specula than to reprocess reusable versions.
Single-use devices
The MHRA (2000) emphasizes that devices designated for single use must not be reused under any circumstances. The devices are not designed to be reprocessed, as doing so may cause a range of problems, such as material and substance alteration, or mechanical failure. It may also be that processing will not clean them adequately. All these factors increase the risk of cross-infection. However, poor understanding of the consequences of repeated use of devices intended for single use only leads to many of them being reprocessed and reused, despite clear labels on the packaging and sometimes on the instruments themselves.
Conclusion
The GPs in Salford who are purchasing single-use speculam through the PCT are
reducing the risks of cross-infection among their patients. Furthermore, litigation from
unsafe practice is being minimized. For safe practice it is essential that national
guidelines on the use and decontamination of surgical instruments are adhered to. If
benchtop sterilizers are used, it is essential that they are done so correctly; failure to do
so has serious consequences.

very simple to adopt. She urged Grace
Management to organize awareness programs in
different hospitals and Heads of Nursing
institutions should also be invited to join this
informative and educational campaign. Print and
electronic media can also play an important role in
this regard. She suggested to organize awareness
activities during conference and symposia and
small group discussion in different hospitals to
highlight the consequences of pricking of IV
infusion bottles. She commended the efforts being
made by Grace Healthcare to educate the
healthcare professionals and public. See hoped
that their efforts to create awareness regarding

BIOSPRAY® Equine Collagen
BIOSPRAY® is an advanced medication, available in powder form with spray
atomizer, made of native type I collagen extracted from horse flexor tendon,
telopeptides and gelatine free, that keeps its native structure, specific to the
body's skin tissue.
A peculiar proprietary extraction process minimizes all the factors of potential
allergencity of the collagen (telopeptides, denaturation, hydrolysis, etc.) and
characterizes BIOSPRAY® for a particular degree of purity and as excellent
haemostat and modulator of the tissue repair process.
BIOSPRAY® is designed to create a favourable environment at the wound
site, protecting the wounded area, controlling the micro-environment of the
lesion and to stop minor bleedings, thus representing an effective and safe
mean for the healing of wounds.
BIOSPRAY® is supplied sterile in a single package (aluminium can), for
repeated use and may be re-used after first supply until exhaustion of the
product.
BIOPAD® & BIOSPRAY® Applied on skin lesions performs a duel action:
MECHANICAL BIOLOGICAL
• It substitutes missing tissue, enhancing anchorage and orientation of fibroblasts for the formation of new tissue
FILLING
• It protects the wound from outer environment, keeping the wound constantly wet
COVERING
•It stimulates proliferation of fibroblasts and formation of granulation tissue. It activates fibronectin, monocytes and formation of native collagen
STIMULUS
•Activation of platelets and coagulation factors
HEMOSTASIS
