October 2018 Grace Episcopal Church Lexington, North The GraceVine MSNBC featured an interview with an author this morning (his name escapes me) pitching his new book. He was looking at the quality we call geniusDa Vinci in parcular. During the interview, as you would expect, the queson arose: what qualies did Da Vinci (Einstein, and others) exhibit that defined their genius”? His answer was ability two-fold: their ability to focus ghtly on a goal, and simultaneously their openness to the big picture. It sounds paradoxical. How do we comprehend that? Interesngly, Id just finished watching a series of videos on You Tube featuring rock guitarist and innovator, Eddie Van Halen (EVH). Mr. Van Halen has been hailed as a genius not only for his prowess on electric guitar, but for his developments to the physical nature of the instrument itself. In the mid 1970’s he assembled and debuted his own instrument from aſter-market parts that combined the best qualies a Fender Stratocaster with those of a Gibson Les Paul. If you dont know what any of that means, let me put it to you this way: Its like breading a dog with a cat! Theyre both four-legged and furry but completely different animals. But Mr. EVH did it, and did it so well that he changed the world of guitar forever! He is for many people (me included) the Paganini the Franz Liszt of my generaon. But, when repeatedly asked about the thought process was for his genius,Mr. EVH responded with variaons of I havent a clue,I couldnt tell you,” “cant say for sure, it was just what I needed to do to make it work for me.Mr. EVH has a parcular sound in his head he was chasing and vision of how to get that sound and either a naiveté or ambivalence toward orthodoxys point of view that what he wanted couldnt or shouldnt be done. He had both focus (the sound) and a big pictureThere are some people out there who say aliens built the pyramids because Egypans didnt have the technology to do it on their own. What the Egypans had was vision and passion and intelligence a thousand years for trial and error (openness) and most important of all NO ONE STANDING ON THE SIDELINES TELLING THEM IT COULDNT (or shouldnt) BE DONE!! A vision of what could be and an openness to serendipity (the Spirits leading) while working to make the vision a reality. In some that may seem like genius, but for the rest of us – also blessed by God with memory, reason, and skillits called faith. MSNBC featured an interview with an author this morning (his name escapes me) pitching his new book. He was looking at the quality we call “genius” – Da Vinci in particular. During the interview, as you would expect, the question arose: what qualities did Da Vinci (Einstein, and others) exhibit that defined their “genius”? His answer was ability two-fold: their ability to focus tightly on a goal, and simultaneously their openness to “the big picture.” It sounds paradoxical. How do we comprehend that?

Interestingly, I’d just finished watching a series of videos on You Tube featuring rock guitarist and innovator, Eddie Van Halen (EVH). Mr. Van Halen has been hailed as a genius not only for his prowess on electric guitar, but for his developments to the physical nature of the instrument itself. In the mid 1970’s he assembled and debuted his own instrument from after-market parts that combined the best qualities a Fender Stratocaster with those of a Gibson Les Paul. If you don’t know what any of that means, let me put it to you this way: It’s like breading a dog with a cat! They’re both four-legged and furry … but completely different animals. But Mr. EVH did it, and did it so well that he changed the world of guitar forever! He is for many people (me included) the Paganini … the Franz Liszt … of my generation. But, when repeatedly asked about the thought process was for his “genius,” Mr. EVH responded with variations of “I haven’t a clue,” “I couldn’t tell you,” “can’t say for sure, it was just what I needed to do to make it work for me.” Mr. EVH has a particular sound in his head he was chasing … and vision of how to get that sound … and either a naiveté or ambivalence toward orthodoxy’s point of view that what he wanted couldn’t or shouldn’t be done. He had both focus (the sound) and a “big picture” There are some people out there who say “aliens built the pyramids because Egyptians didn’t have the technology to do it on their own.” What the Egyptians had was vision … and passion … and intelligence … a thousand years for trial and error (openness) … and most important of all … NO ONE STANDING ON THE SIDELINES TELLING THEM IT COULDN’T (or shouldn’t) BE DONE!! A vision of what could be … and an openness to serendipity (the Spirit’s leading) while working to make the vision a reality. In some that may seem like genius, but for the rest of us – also blessed by God with “memory, reason, and skill” – it’s called faith. Until next time, when once again we’ll gather ‘round The Master’s Bench, I bid you peace. Fr. Alton +

Rite 13 needs your help!

Rite 13

Pastor’s Pantry has challenged the uptown church youth groups to a can drive to restock their shelves. The Pantry serves 700 clients monthly, and the inventory is low. We are asking our congregation to celebrate the “Feast of Grace” by bringing canned goods to the picnic at the Ingram’s farm on October 6th, or to church on the 7th. The youth will collect the cans and deliver them to the Pantry the

following week. Thanks for your support of this worthy cause! Other upcoming events for October include parking cars at the BBQ Festival on October 27th. We will join the other uptown youth in hosting the Halloween party on October 28th at First Methodist Church. We hope families will join us for Trunk or Treat, games and goodies from 5-6:30 pm.

Once again, the Faith and the Arts Committee, under the Liturgy and Worship Commission, is asking the congregation to send in pictures of Saints in their lives for All Saints Sunday.

These Saints can be family, friends or any person who has been a Saint in their life. These pictures will be displayed in the church as we celebrate all the Saints who are near and dear to our hearts.

If you sent in pictures last year we

saved them to use for this year. However, you are welcome to add more pictures.

If you did not send in any last year, please consider including some photos for this year.

Deadline for turning in photographs is Sunday, October 21. There will be a box in the Narthex designated for the photos. Please send us copies as we will be affixing these photos to the wall in the sanctuary. They will

not be returned.

If you would prefer to email the photo please send it to [email protected]

If you have any questions you may contact members of the Faith and the Arts Committee: Staley Nance, Kathy Johnson, or Kathie Goodman.

Please write the name of your Saint on the back of the photo.

ADULT FORUM – 9:45 a.m. Sundays (Commons Rm)

ENOUGH: (REVISED): DISCOVERING

JOY THROUGH SIMPLICITY AND GENEROSITY

Sundays, Oct. 14 thru Nov. 11, 9:45 a.m. (CR)

Money has great power in our lives and, when

used wisely, helps us meet our goals, provide

for our needs, and fulfill our life purpose. But

in recent years, many of us ignored this when

managing and spending our money. We found

ourselves spending tomorrow’s money today. The

result of all of this was not greater happiness but

greater stress and anxiety. Enough is an invitation to

rediscover the Bible’s wisdom on prudent financial

practices. Find the keys to experiencing contentment,

overcoming fear, and discovering joy through simplicity

and generosity. This popular series by Adam Hamilton

was revised in May 2018. This video

study features the author presenting:

Introduction: Faith in the Midst of Financial Crisis

When Dreams Become Nightmares

Wisdom and Finance

Cultivating Contentment

Defined by Generosity

ISRAEL: MODERN HOPE IN AN ANCIENT LAND

(Rescheduled) Sunday, November 18, 9:45 a.m. (Commons Rm)

The Rev. Lee Jessup will be leading this forum

described in his words as follows: “Old school/as usual

politics are not being embraced by younger Jews,

Muslims, and Christians in Israel. Many young people

met on our recent pilgrimage to the holy land genuinely

yearn for a peaceful co-existence with other faiths. I

see and would like to share a vision of new hope for

the region in the coming years.”

FEAST OF GRACE INTERGENERATIONAL

Sunday, Oct. 7, 10:00 a.m. (Church sanctuary)

Adults will gather as a church family with youth and

children to learn more about Grace Church’s Feast Day.

Everyone is also welcome to visit the Museum of Grace

during the Social Hour after the service.

CHILDREN/YOUTH FORMATION

Sunday Mornings at 9:45 a.m. (Arts Academy Entrance –

Gather in the new Music Room)

This Fall, kids ages 3 years old all the way up to 7th

grade will move through the different rotations of the

Creation Unit. Each age group will experience music,

art, science, cooking, and games related to the story of

how God created the world in 7 days. This year we are

meeting in our new music room at 9:45 on Sunday

mornings to begin with music rehearsals. All children

and youth are welcome to join us as we will sing on

October 7 during the Feast of Grace. Thank you SO

much to Rick and Nancy Mack for donating their piano

to the church to be used for Children's music as well as

Arts Academy piano lessons.

GROWING EPISCOPALIANS (GE) for Children in Grades

3-5 – 1st Wednesdays 5:30-7:00 p.m. (Undercroft)

The Growing Episcopalians

enjoyed getting back together in

September. Thank you to Laurie

Briggs for providing dinner which

included all of their favorite

foods! Allen Ingram prepared a

campfire in the side lot on which

they roasted marshmallows to

use in their S'mores. We then

went into the

s a n c t u a r y

where our 4th graders learned how

to acolyte. They are looking

forward to serving during worship

services this year!

Next month we will join Rite 13

members and work with the

Casserole Committee.

YOUTH GROUP Rite-13 (Middle School); J2A (High School)

Sunday Evenings at the home of Cathy and Sims Riggan

The first two years of the amazing Journey to Adulthood

program assists young people as they begin to take the

first steps of independence from their families into

their own lives. Over the next two years, the community

of Grace Church will acknowledge the gift of gender,

celebrate the creative power and potential of these

young people, and create a safe haven in which to

explore new ideas, new interests, and new abilities.
