Isaiah 61:1-4

T he Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, be-cause the Lord has anointed me; he has

sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim lib-erty to the captives, and release to the prison-ers; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s fa-vor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion – to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of right-eousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory. They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. Acts 7:54-60

W hen they heard these things, they be-came enraged and ground their teeth at

Stephen. But filled with the Holy Spirit, he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” But they covered their

ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spir-it.” Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he died. Luke 12:2-8

Jesus said, “Nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed from the housetops. I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, af-ter he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight. But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many spar-rows. And I tell you, everyone who acknowl-edges me before others, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God.”

Celebrant: Lifting our voices with all creation and all the saints of every time and place, let us offer our prayers to God, saying; In your mercy, hear us, Lord.

For the holy church of God throughout the world, remembering Michael our Presiding Bishop, Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury and the Standing Committee of the Diocese of South Carolina; and remembering Vorhees College and The United Church of North India in the Anglican Communion; that the Lord may confirm the Church in faith, sustain it in hope, and deepen its communion in charity. In your mercy, Hear us, Lord.

For the leaders of all nations and peoples, that there may be mercy, justice, and peace throughout the world; for those who serve in the military, mission, or

outreach work; remembering Maxwell Adler, Legare Augenstein, Evans Barnes, Henry Hanes, Thomas Hanahan, Griffin Hill, Denis Kuchta, Dan Myers, Keene Nettles, Edward Pritchard IV, Andrew Rucker, Frances Skardon, Jake Thompson, Andrew Shook

In your mercy, Hear us, Lord.

For this city and every place; for ourselves, our families and companions, and all those we love. In your mercy,

Hear us, Lord.

For all those in danger: those who are hungry and homeless; those who are oppressed or imprisoned; that the example of the martyrs may give them courage and the help of believers give them hope. In your mercy,

Hear us, Lord.

We give thanks for all the blessings of this life; for the baptism of Perry McPherson Buckner V. For the life, witness, and martyrdom of William

Alexander Guerry. In your mercy. Hear us, Lord.

For all those who are ill or suffering hardship,

In your mercy. Hear us, Lord.

For the dying and the dead, and all who mourn.

Albert B. Burt, Joseph Robert Horn IV, and Edith Tipton

In your mercy. Hear us, Lord.

Celebrant: Holy God, mighty God, immortal God, adored by martyrs and praised by the saints, receive the prayers of your holy church, and grant them in accordance with your gracious will, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect of the Day Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Let us pray.

God of truth and sacrifice, we give thanks for your servant William Alexander Guerry, who, like the church's first martyr, gave witness to your liberating gospel and echoed Christ's healing words of forgiveness. May we also seek your truth as we offer ourselves in obedience to the same. All this we pray through him who is forever the bishop and reformer of our souls, Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

Please be seated.

Psalm 116:1-8 (choir) Dilexi, quoniam Anglican Chant: David Cooper

I am well pleased that the Lord hath heard the voice of my prayer; That he hath inclined his ear unto me therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. The snares of death compassed me round about and the pains of hell gat hold upon me. I shall find trouble and heaviness, and I will call upon the Name of the Lord O Lord, I beseech thee, deliver my soul. Gracious is the Lord, and righteous yea, our God is merciful. The Lord preserveth the simple I was in misery, and he helped me. Turn again then unto thy rest, O my soul for the Lord hath rewarded thee. And why? thou hast delivered my soul from death mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.

The Homily

The Nicene Creed 358 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People

Confession and Absolution

Celebrant: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

People: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Peace Celebrant: The peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you.

Presentation Hymn Old 100th Arr. Ralph Vaughan Williams

Let us now praise famous men, and our fathers that begat us. Such as did bear rule in their kingdoms, men renowned for their power, giving counsel by their understanding, and declaring prophecies: Leaders of the people by their counsel, and by their knowledge. Such as found out musical tunes, and recited verses in writing. All these were honored in their generations, and were the glory of their times. And some there be which have no memorial; who are perished as though they had never been. Their bodies are buried in peace, but their names liveth for evermore. -From Ecclesiasticus 44

The Great Thanksgiving (Eucharistic Prayer B) Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise. Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

For the wonderful grace and virtue declared in all your saints, who have been the chosen vessels of your grace, and the lights of the world in their generations.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus and Benedictus Mass of St. Thomas David Thorne

The Celebrant continues

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant and People We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

Page 10: Grace Church Cathedral...Grace Church Cathedral in the City of Charleston The Diocese of South Carolina The Feast of William Alexander Guerry Bishop, Reformer, and Martyr June 28,

Page 10 - 11:00

The Celebrant continues And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ and make them new, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Blessed Stephen, Blessed Alban, Blessed William Alexander Guerry and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Communion Hymn 238 Blessed feasts of blessed martyrs Holy Manna

Please stand.

Postcommunion Prayer

All: Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Blessing

1. Blessed feasts of blessed martyrs, holy women, holy men, with affection's recollections greet we your return again. Worthy deeds they wrought, and wonders, worthy of the Name they bore; we, with meetest praise and sweetest, honor them for evermore.

2. Faith prevailing, hope unfailing, loving Christ with single heart, thus they, glorious and victorious bravely bore the martyr's part, by contempt of every anguish, by unyielding battle done; victors at the last, they triumph with the host of angels one.

3. Therefore, ye that reign in glory, fellow-heirs with Christ on high, join to ours your supplication when before him we draw nigh, praying that, this life completed, all its fleeting moments past, by his grace we may be worthy of eternal bliss at last.

(Refrain) There is a balm in Gilead, to make the wounded whole, There is a balm in Gilead, to heal the sin-sick soul.

Sometimes I feel discouraged, and think my work’s in vain, But then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again. (Refrain)

If you cannot sing like angels, if you cannot preach like Paul, You can tell the love of Jesus, and say, “He died for all.” (Refrain)

1. Jerusalem the golden, with milk and honey blest, beneath thy contemplation sink heart and voice oppressed: I know not, oh, I know not, what joys await us there; what radiancy of glory, what bliss beyond compare!

2. They stand, those halls of Zion, all jubilant with song, and bright with many an angel, and all the martyr throng: the Prince is ever in them, the daylight is serene; the pastures of the blessèd are decked in glorious sheen.

3. There is the throne of David; and there, from care released, the shout of them that triumph, the song of them that feast; and they who with their Leader have conquered in the fight, for ever and for ever are clad in robes of white.

4. Oh, sweet and blessèd country, the home of God's elect! Oh, sweet and blessèd country, that eager hearts expect! Jesus, in mercy bring us to that dear land of rest, who art, with God the Father, and the Spirit, ever blest.

Welcome Home, Rob! We are pleased to welcome as guest preacher this morning, the Reverend Rob Donehue. Rob serves as the rector of St Anne’s in Conway. We also welcome members of his parish who are watching via live-streaming of today’s service.

Congratulations to Rob and St Anne’s as they prepare to move into their recently purchased church building. Your hard work and commitment inspire us all!

A Word from the Dean

William Alexander Guerry writes, “No religion can survive. . .which is not capable of adapting itself to restatement and reinterpretation in the light of the science and philosophy of the day…. It has been the glory of Christianity that from the beginning it has shown itself capable of change and development.” Welcome to Bishop Guerry Sunday at Grace Church Cathedral. Guerry’s words remind us what God’s great gift to us is in Jesus Christ. True enough, as Christians we claim a Savior not a Law-maker. God gives us a Son and not a Rule Book, a Shepherd and not a Written Examination. And so, it is in living into the Christ who has been given to us that we are enabled and empow-ered to grow in our knowledge and love of God. That growing promises us the possibility to reinterpret and restate the faith as Bishop Guerry invites, just as Jesus would reinterpret and re-state the faith of Israel. John Henry Newman writes in his Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, “Christianity changes in order to remain the same.” One of the great joys of the faith is that it is reborn in every generation. That newly born faith is seldom interested in celebrating yet alone worshipping only the ‘status quo’. No, as in the ex-ample of our martyred bishop, the new generation of faith calls us forward. While rooted in the tradition, we are, through the gift of God’s Holy Spirit, invited to name our fresh insights and claim our new understandings of that very same faith once delivered to the saints. Today, on this special day, we pay tribute to those who have been faithful in the past, pastors and prophets, servants and sages. We also look to those who are nearer to the beginning of their Christian pilgrimage. Yes, to honor Bishop Guerry is to honor both what God has done through the faithfulness of his saints and all that God invites us to do in the days ahead. Reinterpretation and restating, change and development: Some, it would seem, are threatened by such words. But Bishop Guerry’s words are as necessary to heed in this generation as they were in his own. Some will not welcome the gift of his living and more dynamic definition of reli-gion. Nothing has changed. All the while, Christ continues his plea within us to change, for his sake and in his name.

For specific details on those groups and any questions relating to outreach, please contact Mac Magee at [email protected].

A word of thanks Sean McConnell, senior director of engagement for Episcopal Relief and Development, offered the fol-lowing word of thanks after the most recent fifth Sunday donations: “I must say that it is truly re-markable how much compassion and generosity the good people of Grace Church Cathedral show at all times. May God continually bless the good people of Grace Church Cathedral and of South Carolina.”
