reconciliation, and expressions of good will than we can imagine. It is just that evil has a better press agent.

Yes, you and I can make the world a better place by how we act, speak, and by what we support, and (dare I say it?), we will make America greater by making our church greater – by strengthening our church and its ministries of mercy and compassion, education, and the character development of youth. Th is fall, cast your vote for a greater Mount Olivet by fi nancially pledging and giving (see pages 5 & 14 for more details).

A story is told about a church-goer named William, who was promoting tithing among his fellow church members. His friend, Charlie, said to him, “With all this talk about tithing, it seems like you are trying to make us feel guilty about what we give to church.” William backed off . Yet, this is what William wishes he had said:

“I hate to tell you this, Charlie, but you are guilty; so it is not inappropriate for you to feel guilty. Guilt feelings may be God’s way of telling you that you are doing something wrong. But here’s something else, and that is this: you are forgiven. If you do not feel forgiven, maybe you should listen to the gospel more carefully – and let that reality penetrate your feelings. And above all, the question remains the same, Charlie: guilty and forgiven, what are you going to do this year?”

Yes, Grace Changes Everything! See you in church on Rally Sunday, September 11!

TESLife & Growth

Pastoral UpdatePASTOR STEPHEN CORNILS and PASTOR DREW BAKKEN have been

named the new pastoral leads for Mount Olivet West Campus. Th e decision to deploy two pastors to West was made with consideration for accelerating growth and in preparation for the capital campaign envisioned for next spring. Th is staffi ng arrangement is open-ended so that a new senior pastor will be free to implement his /her vision for the further development of the West Campus.

Pastor Cornils is pleased to be returning to West where he served as lead pastor from 2007 to 2010. He will retain a strong presence at the Mpls Campus: preaching, managing current congregation-wide assignments of Worship, Adult Ministry, and Stewardship. Pastor Cornils’ new title is Pastor for Vision & Mission.

Pastor Bakken, currently the task force chair of the new building at the West Campus, will continue to provide oversight for Youth Ministry, and the Global Mission task force. Pastor Bakken will be present most Sundays at Mount Olivet West Campus and at regularly scheduled West Campus events and activities. Pastor Bakken is designated as Pastor for Congregational Life & Growth.

1700 Chapel Casavant Organ Dedication Concert

Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. -- DR. MARTIN LUTHER*

As part of our commemoration of Reformation 500, we are excited to present a special organ dedication concert 7pm, Sunday, October 2, at our 1700 Chapel. Come hear KRAIG WINDSCHITL play the recently installed Casavant pipe organ in our historical sanctuary located across 50th Street from the Minneapolis church. Th e beauty of this instrument and the chapel’s acoustics will underscore Dr. Martin Luther’s assessment of music as one of the greatest treasures God has given us.

Luther considered music to be an important and uplifting gift from God, as opposed to something born of humankind. Infl uenced by his musical family, Luther grew up to be a talented tenor, fl ute and lute player, and composer. As a pastor, Luther believed in the power of music to instruct and inspire his parishioners. As a church reformer, he helped amplify the role of music in Christian worship by composing hymns and creating new music for the organ and church choirs. Truly, Luther believed the power of music fueled the heart of the Reformation.

It is only fi tting that our Reformation 500 calendar includes this evening of celebrating God’s gift of music with this very special organ concert. Come and experience an evening of treasured compositions that will move you – intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually.* From Luther’s foreward to Georg Rhau’s Symphoniai, 1538

The Good LifeI recently attended my high school

reunion and had a great time connecting with old friends. Some of my classmates have chosen to retire early and live, as many of them described, “the good life.” Th e use of this phrase by so many caused me to question, what is the good life?

Th e phrase itself originally came from Aristotle and the Greek philosophers who debated what constitutes happiness. Not surprisingly, “the good life” is a very popular phrase in our culture today. I googled the phrase and 342 million entries came up. Th ere were songs and movies, restaurants and bars, a rock band, books and seminars, and an upscale barber shop called Th e Good Life.

But what is “the good life?” What does the phrase mean to you and me? Before the time of Aristotle and the Greek philosophers, ancient Israel had its own expressions of the good life. Perhaps the most beautiful expression of the good life is found in Psalm 23 – probably the most familiar and beloved of all the psalms in the Hebrew scriptures: “Th e Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” It is a simple but radical statement that we can trust God with our lives. God will provide. In a consumer culture that teaches us to want and to need many things, it’s counter cultural to hear the psalmist say, “Th e Lord is my shepherd, I shall lack nothing.” But rather than trusting fi rst in ourselves and our eff orts to secure our future, the psalm declares that we can trust God for the future.

Th e good news of the Gospel is that Jesus, the shepherd of God, came as an expression of God’s love for us. In the mystery of the Cross and Resurrection, he off ers us the good life. Whatever our situation in life, God is there. We can live in a place of deep inner trust and peace – a peace that doesn’t depend on external things, but a peace that comes from God.

“Th e Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” I am the good shepherd … My sheep hear my voice … and they follow me. I give them life …” – PASTOR BILL MACLEAN

Where did our Casavant organ come from? Mount Olivet’s acquisition of this organ was made possible through the generosity of Kathy and Charlie Cunningham. In February 2015, we purchased the pipe organ from Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in St. Paul. Installation of the organ – which included updating the organ console for possible future additions of digital sounds – was completed in August 2015. Now the organ is a special part of wedding, funeral, and other services and events held at our 1700 Chapel.

West Organist NewsWe are sorry to announce that KRAIG WINDSCHITL has resigned from his position

as Co-Principal Organist, West Campus. His fi nal Sunday playing for worship will be September 4, at the West Campus. Kraig has accepted the principal organist position at Wayzata Community Church where he also will be responsible for the Handbell program. We are forever grateful to Kraig for the music that he has shared with our congregation, and the energy and laughter he has shared with all of us during the years that he served Mount Olivet. We wish him the very best with his new church family.

We are thrilled to announce that DR. LINDA BERGER has accepted the position of Associate Organist for the West Campus. Linda is a professor at St. Olaf College and is known nationally for her contributions and publications as a music educator. She received a bachelor’s degree, Phi Beta Kappa, from St. Olaf College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in music from the University of Minnesota. As a life-long Lutheran, and servant of the church, Linda will bring to our staff not only an immense talent, but a wonderfully collaborative and kind spirit. Her fi rst Sunday on the bench will be October 2. Welcome Linda!

Not for SaleGrace Changes Everything is the theme

for our annual Mount Olivet September Stewardship emphasis. It is the fi rst offi cial “posting” of a year-long observance of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, a movement prompted by Dr. Martin Luther posting the 95 Th eses on the Castle Church door at Wittenberg.

At the time of Luther, and reappearing in contemporary misrepresentations of God’s gracious economy, forgiveness of sin and salvation were/are sold for a price. In order to secure

relief from the penalty of sin and release from purgatory, the Roman nuncio, John Tetzel, cleverly advertised, “When a coin into the coff er rings, a soul from purgatory springs.” Even today, rather than claim the amazing, unmerited grace of God, common sense and fear direct “paying our dues to God, you know, to cover my bases.” Even today, timid souls are easily tormented, and institutional goals may be achieved through wielding fear, guilt, and shame. Eff ective? Yes!

Nein! Not so, countered Luther. Drawing counsel and courage from the Word of God, Luther discovered, “there is a kingdom of grace that is mightier in us and over us than all wrath, sin, and evil.” God’s grace is a gift that is freely given to us. We don’t earn a thing when it comes to God’s love. We only try to live in response to the gift. Th at’s it. Grace changes everything … including how much and, more importantly, why we give back to God.

So, beloved Mount Olivet members, in a spirit of praise and gratitude, let each of us prayerfully prepare our 2017 pledges and giving plans providing for our Lord’s church, Mount Olivet, in joyful generosity. Let us be thinking with Luther: “I live in grace. Th erefore my whole life serves God.”

See you in church and at Stewardship dinners in September! Come and learn more about the transformative power of Grace!

Call Committee UpdateThe Mount Olivet senior pastor call committee has been meeting nearly weekly all

summer. The committee has spent a considerable amount of time researching a list of prospective candidates. The list of possible candidates was developed by the call committee in researching large congregations and reaching out to a wide variety of persons within the ELCA for recommendations, in addition to receiving candidate names from members of our congregation. The committee has conducted a number of initial interviews with candidates and that process continues as we match candidates with our senior pastor profi le.

While it would be desirable to provide a timeline for completion of our search, the process of identifying and interviewing candidates takes time in order to be thorough in fi nding the best person to serve Mount Olivet. Thank you for your patience, and most importantly, thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

In the coming year, Mount Olivet will be preparing in myriad ways to celebrate the upcoming 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation. As we do, you will notice the use of Luther’s seal in several places, including on 2017 Stewardship

publicity as well as for Reformation 500 publicity. Look for the Reformation 500 logo (shown on the left) for upcoming events. Read below for more about Luther’s seal.

The Most Enduring Symbol of the Reformation: Luther’s Seal

In Mount Olivet’s worship space, as in most, you will fi nd many symbols of the faith, beliefs, and history of the people who worship there. A very familiar one in Lutheran churches is the seal of Martin Luther, the man who on October 31, 1517, posted* 95 Th eses (statements) regarding practices by the Catholic church that he felt needed reform. Th is act, which put him and his career at risk, sparked the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.

Dr. Luther’s seal, which he designed himself, so beautifully expresses his theology and his faith. Here is his explanation of it:• Th e black cross in the center indicates Christ’s magnifi cient

sacrifi ce on the cross for every sinner who ever lived. • Th e cross is in the center of a red heart to remind us that faith

causes love, joy, and peace to grow in the human heart. • Th e red heart is on a white rose (Luther’s favorite fl ower),

because white is the color of angels and blessed spirits. • Th e white rose is against a blue-sky background to symbolize the

Christian’s hope for the coming joys of heaven. • Th e seal is enclosed in a gold ring, showing that the bliss of

heaven is unending. Please join us as we lift up “all things Lutheran” over this next year through worship, music, art, classes, book discussions, special events, service opportunities, and more! Many of these opportunities can be found in this issue of the Messenger. And watch next month for a complete listing of the entire year’s off erings so you can plan ahead! * While legend says Luther posted his 95 Th eses on the All Saints (Castle Church) Door in Wittenberg, Germany, it is not known for a fact. He actually may have posted (mailed) them!

Luther Fun Facts • At birth, Martin Luther’s name was Martin Luder.

He later changed it to the more academically respectable Luther.

• Luther once said he had not even seen a Bible until he was 20 years old.

• Luther translated Erasmus’ Greek New Testament into German at the headlong rate of more than 1500 words per day. After a mere four months, it was completed and released in March 1522. In September 1522, he released a revised edition on which he’d worked with his friend Philip Melancthon.

Meet Your Hi-League Presidents Hello Mount Olivet Family! My name is Katie Ridler, I am going to be a senior at Chaska High School this coming fall and I am the new WEST Hi-League President for this upcoming year. I am very excited to welcome all the incoming 9th-graders to Hi-League as well as any new Hi-Leaguers from any grade! I consider the greatest thing about Hi-League to be the coming together of people from high schools all over the metro area to participate in very fun, faith-based activities. You get the opportunity to reconnect with good friends you have made up at Cathedral of the Pines Camp and don’t get to see very often during the school year, as well as meet new people. Hi-League gives you the chance to bring a little of camp home during the school year and a little breather away from homework and the stresses of everyday life. Being involved in Mount Olivet as a high-schooler is important because it gives us a weekly reminder that God is with us always and teaches life lessons that we can carry out as young adults and can help us build confi dence in ourselves due to the warm and welcoming environment. I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and I hope to see lots of new smiling faces at the fi rst Hi-League this year! “Let all that you do be done in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:14Greetings Mount Olivet! My name is Isabel St. Dennis and I am a senior at Edina High School. I have the honor to introduce myself as this year’s MPLS Hi-League president. To all the upcoming freshmen that will be joining Hi-League for the fi rst time, I want to say welcome! It is such a rewarding and fun thing to be a part of. To me, Hi-League has the same feel as Cathedral of the Pines Camp. When it’s the dead of winter and school is tough, and all you want is to go to an evening chapel service, Hi-League is the place to go. Not only do you get to see your church friends, but you also get to experience God. As a senior, I understand the demands and responsibilities expected of students in high school. It’s sometimes diffi cult to fi nd time for God during the school year, and sport seasons. However, I also have learned the importance of having a faith life during high school and the need for a healthy outlet to express yourself freely. Hi-League is exactly that. Along with being an active Hi-League member, I sing in Cathedral Choir, and participate in Circle of Friends and Kids Café. All of these things have led me to meet new people and make lifelong friends. I cannot wait to spend time with all of you, old and new, at Hi-League this upcoming year.

Youth

Hi-League (9th-12th Gr) is a social and service program for high school youth. It is a great opportunity for fun and fellowship. Bring your friends! Questions: Billy Johnson 612.767.2214 [email protected].

Summer at Mount Olivet was a BLAST!Th e C&FM team was blessed to work with awesome counselors this summer at Vacation Bible School, FunDays, Camp Cheer, King’s Kids, and Camp SOAP (Summer of Awesome Programs). One counselor, BELLA (shown below with camper), joined us for VBS, King’s Kids, and Camp SOAP. Here is what she had to say: “Hello, my name is Bella and I spent most of the month of July with 1st- through 6th-graders. I saw the C&FM staff more than I saw my mom, and I was completely content in doing so because being a counselor put a perpetual smile on my face every day. Th is may sound cliché, but I truly think I got more out of the experience than any of the kids did. I met some of my favorite people and ran around with amazing kids every day while learning more about myself and about God than I ever would have hoped. I don’t know if there is anything more rewarding than a kid who has had a blast at camp come up to you at the end of the week, give you a hug, and thank you for playing with them. Th ey don’t know how happy it makes us, or about how that feeling is the reason counselors keep coming back, they just wanted to say ‘thank you’ for running in circles with them before lunch and for being the victim of many water wars. So … I will be a counselor until the day they tell me I can’t.”

Camp CheerMother-daughter team AMEE

and BETTY LIABRAATEN created a fun three-morning camp for kids K-2nd grade. Twenty-four campers learned a dance, shared a talent, and cheered for families on the last day.
