    Kerosene Lanterns

    Lanterns were used in theold days. Although electricitymakes them unnecessaryin the barn, they were usedthere at one time. Beforethe power lines were put upin the rural areas, farmerswho worked long days, gotup early in the morning tomilk the cows. If they wereup before the sun, theselanterns got them throughthe darkness and enabledthem to do their jobs.HC- .

    Before WWII, farmers picked cornby hand for hours. Horses pulled thewagons. Tey were so well-trained thatthe horses did not need a driver whenhe was picking the corn. Tey could tellby where the farmer stood or by what

    he said that they should move ahead.Te bang board on the far-side of thewagon enabled the farmer to bankthe ear of corn off of it. Ten the eardropped in the wagon bed. Some menhired out to farmers and earned $1.00a day.

    Tis is a very oldmanure spreader.Farmers use them toclean the barnyardand the barn. Temanure is carriedin the spreader tofertilize the fields.An apron (seen

    Tis log cabin was built to commemorate the thbirthday celebration of the United States. Grandpa,dad, and son joined efforts to finish it. Grandpa andDad are gone now, but their love of country and theirwork still lingers.HC- .

    Corn Crib & Garden

    Te garden and the raspberry patch yield abounty for the family. Te field, however,

    produces abundantly for the cattle. Te cornis stored on the ear in the corncrib until itis ground as feed for the cows. During thattime the corn is air-dried. Many farmersnowadays dry shelled corn in a corn dryerwhich uses electricity to dry the corn. If afarmer can take the time to wait, the corncrib does the job just as well..HC- .
