Grace and Peace from our Lord Jesus Christ,

May is a month full of many things. It is associated with the beginning of spring, the first flowers, and the advent of summer. For the church, however, this May is about the advent of something entirely different, yet equally if not more life-giving. It is about the Advent of the Holy Spirit which will be celebrated on May 20th.

Pentecost is the time that we celebrate what drives the Church. We are a church driven by Word and Witness and fueled by the Spirit. What does it mean to be a Church driven by the Spirit? According to Acts chapter 2, the Spirit driven Church holds all things in common especially faith in the risen Christ.

Dear sisters and brothers, this is the faith that we are driven out in the world to share. By holding this faith in common we serve as bright tongues of flame giving light to the fact the God loves and is involved with this World. It is this light that we bear to the four corners of the World, just as the Apostles did.

May you be sent by the Holy Spirit to be a witness to God’s love in this world,

Yours in Christ, Pastor Ben

PARISH NEWS GIRLS SCHOOL IN KARAGWE, TANZANIA

The Bweranyange Girls School is owned and operated by the Karagwe Diocese of the Tanzanian Lutheran Church. The motto of the school is, "It takes a woman to raise a nation." Girls attending the school are trained in English and the traditional high school subjects so that they can pursue higher education. They also receive instruction in leadership skills and religion. As in the past, a Mother's Day offering will be collected to honor women of faith, strength, and hope. That offering will be turned into a scholarship to offer hope to a young girl whose family cannot afford her tuition to the school. You are invited to give a special gift to the school in honor of a woman (mother, aunt, grandmother, sister, teacher, neighbor, spouse, co-worker, pastor, friend) who has had an impact on your life. Complete the form below and put it and your gift into an envelope marked "Girls School," and place in the offering plate. If you would like credit for your gift, be sure to write your name and the amount on the envelope. The deadline to have your gift listed in the bulletin is May 6. Grace: Please return form and donation to Lois Oakes. Trinity: Please put form and donation in an envelop and place in the offering plate In honor of __________________________________________ In memory of __________________________________________ Given by __________________________________________

May 2018

“HE ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN” The alternate prayer of the day for Ascension of Our Lord proclaims that Christ “ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things,” yet nevertheless “abides with us on earth to the end of time.” Rather than get caught up in the cosmology of this paradox, we should delight in its implications for the church: Christ’s mission has been entrusted to us, and though we cannot see him as before, he continues to

live among us in word and sacrament. “I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT UPON ALL FLESH” The Day of Pentecost is not the beginning of a new season but the culmination of the fifty days of Easter. The same confusion and amazement that characterize the resurrection pervade the readings on this day. From sundaysandseasons.com. Copyright © 2018 Augsburg Fortress. All rights reserved.
