1 Make Snowflakes by Elaine Langlois Introduction Snowflakes form in clouds. Water from the air freezes onto tiny pieces of dust or dirt caught up by the wind. These pieces of ice are called ice crystals. As water keeps freezing onto the crystals, they grow. When the crystals get big and heavy, they fall to the ground. As they fall, they clump together, making snowflakes. Just one crystal can be a snowflake, too. Facts About Snowflakes Snowflakes come in many shapes and sizes. A snowflake is made of up to 200 ice crystals. Most snowflakes are hexagonal, which means they have 6 sides, or points. A snowflake’s shape depends on how cold it is when the snowflake forms, how much the wind blows it around, and other things. Two snowflakes can be the same, though it’s very unlikely. Snowflakes come in many shapes and sizes. A snowflake is made of up to 200 ice crystals. Most snowflakes are hexagonal, which means they have 6 sides, or points.

A snowflake’s shape depends on how cold it is when the snowflake forms, how much the wind blows it around, and other things.

Directions

1. Your paper is a rectangle. To make a snowflake, you need to cut it into a square.

Fold the bottom of the paper up to meet the left side.

2. Cut away the extra paper.

Unfold your paper. See? It’s a square!

Now fold it up again.

3. Put your paper down in front of you so it looks like a mountain. The bottom of the mountain—the fold—should be nearest to you.

4. You are going to make your mountain into a tulip.

Fold a bottom corner of the paper up to make a petal.

5. Now fold the other corner up the same way. Make the two petals the same size.

You may need to fold your paper again or even a few more times to get the petals the same size. That’s OK!

6. Cut away the top of the tulip to make a paper cup.

7. Now for the snowflake. Cut in some shapes from every side of the paper cup.

Do not cut all the way across or cut away all of the folded side. If you do, your snowflake will fall apart!

8. Unfold the paper. You have a snowflake!
