What Is a Pediatric Dentist?

Studies show that poor oral health care in children can lead to impaired school performance as well as poor social relationships. It’s never too early to keep an eye on your child’s oral development. Promoting health habits at an early age can prevent future dental complications.

P ediatric Dentists specialize in treating children from infancy to adolescence. Pediatric den-

tists are to dentistry what pediatri-cians are to internal medicine. Both have received specialized training in recognizing and treating the unique health needs of children.

Typically, pediatric dentists receive two or three additional years of train-ing beyond dental school and may choose to get board certification through the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, which involves a rigorous process of testing and peer evaluation.

During such training, they study child psychology, behavioral control, growth and development, as well as the latest techniques in introduc-ing and providing dental services to children.
