    GOYA

Goya, master of Spanish art, is one of thetruly fascinating figures in art history.

Although he gained fame as a painter ofelaborate portraits for the aristocracy and theroyal family, Goya was also capable of produc-ing some of the most biting satire ever created.

What appears to be a conflict is in fact theresult of living in Spain during a period oftreachery, corruption and decadence. It re-quired cunning and courage as well as skill forGoya to survive and flourish in this at-mosphere.

Through the 48 illustrations reproducedhere, the reader can trace Goya's long anddistinguished career from his first futile at-tempts at gaining entry to the prestigiousRoyal Academy through his appointment asroyal court painter and the illness which lefthim totally deaf at the peak of his career.

During the last few years of his life, Goyapainted a series of grotesque works known asthe "black paintings." Many of these are il-lustrated here. Since they were first discovered, art critics have questioned whether or not theywere the product of a sane mind. This volumeleaves that decision to the reader.
