Transcript of Gowerton School: Hockey, Rugby and Netball tour to Hong Kong and Australia
I am delighted to have this opportunity to write a few words in the tour brochure.
The tour epitomises the success of our school. This success is built upon teamwork, talent, pride inour community and respect for each other. Our tour party will share in this ethos with our welcominghosts.
Gowerton is a school with a long history and many traditions. Academic and sporting excellencehas always been a very important part of this history and tradition. Gowerton was recognized as agood school by ESTYN in 2011, ‘a school where standards are good and improving’ and a schoolwith ‘an outstandingly strong ethos.’ Over the years Gowerton has produced exceptional studentsand many talented men and women who have gone on to represent their Country in their chosensport and achieved high accolades in their chosen fields and in all areas of life.
The school now embraces a wide range of activities, from rugby, hockey, surfing and lacrosse toquiz teams, chess, drama and reading clubs, but the emphasis continues to be on participation, encouraging as many of the school community to be involved as possible. School teams encompassall abilities from the enthusiastic, occasional participant to the inspirational international.
Through the commitment and dedication of staff and volunteers prepared to organise, train and coachteams, the support of parents and hard work and talent of students, the school continues to producestrong individuals and teams. I am confident that our tour teams will continue the Gowertonian traditions of being worthy and cultural sporting ambassadors. I am equally sure that our hosts, withtheir own cultural and sporting reputations, will provide a welcoming reception for all.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has helped organise and is accompanying this tour. Despite the attractions of the locations, I know this tour represents significant extra responsibility forthe people going. I am sure I echo the feelings of the students and their parents and carers, in expressing my gratitude to them and I wish everyone a successful and enjoyable tour.

Message For Gowerton School
One of the great joys of being involved in sport particularly as a young person is getting the chanceto meet and mix with others from differing places and backgrounds. There is no better opportunity todo this than on an overseas tour.
As a player, teacher, coach and now broadcaster I’ve been extremely fortunate to have travelledthe world to take part in, and report on sport and indeed the most impressionable experience wasbeing part of a youth team of Glamorgan Wanderers RFC which toured Canada in 1978. As a 16year old from Ely in Cardiff it was unforgettable and one which has helped to shape my outlook onlife to this day.
So best wishes to all the teams from for the tour of Hong Kong and Australia. Play hard and playto win, be magnanimous in victory and gracious in defeat, be grateful to your hosts and rememberthat you are young sporting ambassadors for Gowerton School, for Swansea and for Wales.I’m sure you’ll do yourselves proud!

Tour organiser’s message
With sixteen weeks until we travel, I can sense the excitement amongst our students is building at the prospectof three weeks in the southern hemisphere. Not just to take on the sporting challenge, but to experience thedifferent cultures, to visit two countries famous for their hospitality and for their variations in scenery andclimate and of course to make new friendships.
We know that from the multicultural societies of Hong Kong Island, Sydney, Manly and Brisbane to the smallercommunities of Tamworth (NSW), and Mooloolaba, we are going to experience a wider variety of people in 3weeks than we would normally do in a year or perhaps even a lifetime. While the extremes of the excitementand exhilaration of white water rafting to the jaw dropping beauty of the Great Barrier Reef are just examplesof experiences that will provide us with memories that will last forever and may even go on to mould andshape our futures.
But going on tour, involves more than just these experiences. When we set out on the long road of organisingthe tour 3 years ago, I said that this was not going to be a holiday, but a learning experience. It wasn’t aboutpaying and stepping onto an aeroplane; it was about the students involving themselves in team training andthen the organisation and administration that going on tour requires. I’m glad to say that the vast majorityhave played their part.
Now the emphasis changes and it’s about playing your part in the ‘team’ that is the touring party. Life is aboutbeing part of a team, whether that team is your family, or your colleagues in the workplace or on the committeein your local community or of course, in your sport’s team.
Each ‘team’ contains its individuals, who are all different; they all have different strengths and weaknessesand, if within each team, its members work together, the sum of the whole will invariably exceed the sum ofthe individual parts. Such is the lesson that teamwork on the field of play teaches us.
If the tour is a success and achieves its aims, then when we step off the coaches in Gowerton on our returnin August, each tour member should be able to look every other member of the party in the eye, shake theirhand, and be confident that they have gained their respect as someone who has played their part in makingthe tour a memorable experience for all involved.
For this to happen, we will all need to act with a concern for the needs of others. There will be times when wewill all need to compromise and act in a way which is best for the party and not necessarily for ourselves asindividuals.
We will need to accept others for what they are and we will need to be patient when, at times, we feel tiredand at the end of our tether.
Let no-one go with any misapprehensions, successful touring is hard work, but if it is successful, it brings asense of achievement that will last as happy memories forever and there will be a bond between the membersof the party which will be unbreakable in the years to come. The lessons learned will be invaluable as our students take their place in their ‘teams’ when they move on after their time in Gowerton.
I give my thanks, in advance, to those who are to host us for all your undoubted hard work. We look forwardto meeting you, and hope we leave you having gained your respect as a party that is polite and respectful, that acts with honesty and integrity, that is humble in victory and gracious in defeat and on the field acts witha level of sportsmanship, of which you, yourselves would be proud. More importantly, that we leave you, withmemories of a group of whom the community of Gowerton and Wales can be proud.
Finally, there are many people who deserve thanks for their help and support and they are included in the acknowledgements. But I, and the rest of the party, although they may not realise it, are indebted to my wifeHelen, for her unwavering support. Without it, none of this would have happened. If I have one regret, it isthat she is unable to travel with us. No doubt, she will be busy keeping our dog, Bobby, entertained until we return.
Dean Mason.

Captain’s Message
With just a few weeks until we leave to start our tour, the excitement within the squad is building andthe boys are raring to go! You can feel the intensity building on and off the pitch and we are lookingforward to having the opportunity to play rugby in Australia and Hong Kong which will be a great experience for us all.
Since starting training in preparation for our tour the boys have come a long way and despite beinga young team, we have shown increasing maturity and dedication. We have had some good, hardsessions and have also had the chance to get to know each other with a few social events off thefield which has helped us bond as a team.
This season has been a challenging one for the 1st XV, as we have a very young squad. Despitethis we have exceeded expectations with many young players stepping up to the mark and puttingin some noteworthy performances to deliver us some big wins. Although some results didn’t go ourway I can’t fault the boy’s attitude and commitment every time they put on the jersey and step ontothe field.
I hope that we can emulate some of the previous successful school tours to the southern hemisphere,or even the recent success of the British and Irish Lions.
On a more personal note, I would just like to say what an honour it is for me to have been privilegedenough to captain the rugby 1st XV over the past season and culminating in this tour. As this is mylast year of school rugby I am thrilled to end it with this tour and I am sure it will provide me withmany fond memories as it has done for my brother who has previously captained the school 1st XVon a tour to Australia and New Zealand.
I would firstly like to say a thank you to all our sponsors, as without their contributions this tour wouldnot be possible.
My thanks also goes out to Mr Lewis for coaching us in the build up for our tour, and to Mr Long andMr Walters for their contributions as well.
The greatest thanks must go to Mr Mason as without his hard work and dedication none of this wouldbe possible. The whole team and I will never be able to thank you enough. We appreciate yourtireless work that has gone into this tour and tours previous to this.
Finally I would like to wish the hockey and netball girls the best of luck in all their games on tour.
Tom Wedlake
As captain of the netball team I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to lead the teamon our tour of Hong Kong and Australia. As tour is approaching, we have been organising andparticipating in different social events to bond as a group, as a school and most importantly as ateam.
As a netball team, we have struggled our way through the season but the girls have great teamspirit and with a positive attitude we hope to rise to the high standard of the teams we will face. Our team includes from County players to new players, but sport is all about taking part and welook forward to rising to the challenge. I' d like to thank Miss Rushworth who has given up herspare time to train us and for being patient with us!
This opportunity would not have been possible without our generous sponsors, without whom thistour would have been a struggle. From the netball girls THANK YOU.
Finally I would like to thank Mr. Mason for organising this once in a lifetime experience for us. Ithink I can say on behalf of everyone going on the Hong Kong and Australia tour that we are verygrateful for all of the effort and commitment he has put towards this tour and the activities he hasplanned for us.
I would also like to wish the rugby and hockey teams the best of luck in all their games on tour.
Thankyou,
Bethany Davies.
On behalf of the Swansea Rugby Foundation, it is with great pleasure that I write these few wordsin wishing Gowerton School every success on their up and coming oversees tour. The trustees arevery proud of the foundation’s work within the region in encouraging and supporting school childrento participate in rugby union along with the provision of funding for what we at the foundation deema once in a lifetime experience.
As we are all aware, rugby despite the recent rise of both Swansea and Cardiff football teams to thePremiership is indeed our national sport and the success of our national side is undoubtedly fuelledby a successful education platform culminating in regional representation and if lucky enough, international honours.
In my three years as secretary of the foundation, I have been enthused by the passion and hardwork of the staff and pupils at Gowerton, work that not your everyday rugby supporter may take intoconsideration when watching their ‘idols’ on the playing fields of the Liberty, Parc y Scarlets, CardiffArms Park and Rodney Parade. It is indeed the platform provided by schools such as Gowerton thatplays a pivotal role within the structure of Welsh Rugby and we are very much looking forward toplaying an active role in developing talent’s such as Dan Biggar, Liam Williams and Sam Davies, indeed it will be of no surprise to us that when the Lions depart for New Zealand in 2017, that two orthree from Gowerton will be key players within the touring party. On behalf of the foundation, may I wish you every success in Hong Kong and Australia.
Best Wishes,
Dylan WilliamsSecretarySwansea Rugby Foundation
Hey guys,
As Captain of the hockey team I am privileged to have the opportunity to lead our hockey team tohopefully some successful wins in Hong Kong and Australia. As tour is approaching soon we havebeen doing different social events to bond as a group, as a school and most importantly as a team.Every Monday we train down the Elba, We have always had a good turnout for hockey but everyonehas pulled their socks up and everyone is training exceptionally well to try to be ready for the toughteams we will come across in Hong Kong and Australia. Even though we don’t get the best of weatherconditions to be playing hockey outside, I am proud of the girls for attending the training sessionsand thankful for to coach. In addition to the Monday training sessions, the majority of the girls play hockey outside of school, some play for County Clubs and other Hockey Club teams in preparation, to widen our experienceand knowledge of the game and to strengthen our skills and performance.I would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Lewis for coaching us every Monday and for all thehard work and effort she puts in for our team. Even though Miss Lewis is not able to join us on tourto give us the guidance and support we need on the side line I am sure we will do great and EmmaJeffries can lead us to victory. Finally I would like to thank Mr. Mason for putting this lifetime experience together for us. I think Ican say on behalf of everyone going on the Hong Kong and Australia tour that we are very gratefulfor all of his effort and commitment he has put towards this tour and the activities you have plannedfor us.I would also like to wish the netball and rugby teams best of luck in all their games on tour.
Thank you,
