Foreword
“Hon’ ble President in his address to the Joint Session of Parliament of 16th Lok
Sabha indicated that each drop of water is precious and launched Pradhana Mantri Krishi
Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), with a major objective to achieve convergence of investments
in irrigation at the field level, expand cultivable area under assured irrigation, improve on-
farm water use efficiency to reduce wastage of water, enhance the adoption of precision
irrigation and other water saving technologies. It will complete the long pending irrigation
projects on priority. Micro-irrigation will be popularized to ensure Per Drop More Crop.
All the five taluks of Gadag district are located in Northern Dry Zone (Zone III) of
Karnataka. The zone has characteristics of scanty rainfall with a maximum temperatures
touching 37-38oC during summer and moderate 30-32oC during other months. Low
temperatures can touch even 14-15o C for brief period during winter. The average annual
rainfall of the district is 641.6 mm received in about 43 rainy days. During the south west
monsoon 56 percent of the annual rainfall is received.
The net sown area of the district is 3.77 lakh ha, of which 42.4 %(1.60 lakh ha) is
irrigated and the rest (57.6%) is rainfed. The district is a part of Krishna basin, divided into
two sub basins namely Malaprabha and Tungabhadra. A tributary of Malaprabha river,
Bennehalla flowing parallel to the main river joins Malapraba river in Ron taluk which is
located at North Eastern part of the district. The main source of irrigation for Gadag district
is from Malaprabha Reservoir supplying water to Naragund and Ron taluks, Lift Irrigation
Scheme of Singatalur to Mundargi taluk, Itagi Sasalwad Lift Irrigation Project to Shirhatti
taluk and Tube wells.
The present planning should give impetus on utilizing water for expansion of irrigated
area, establishment of new industries, creation of special economic zone and also filling of
treated sewage water to the existing tanks so that the district can be a model to the entire
State.
Under PMKSY, it is proposed to take various developmental activities to improve
irrigation facilities in the district and also proposed to create an additional irrigation potential
of 63,522 ha by 2020 with a budgetary support of Rs.3521.53crores. This will help in
intensive cultivation of crops, taking up of multiple crops, judicious use of water and change
of cropping pattern with emphasis on micro irrigation. This will create additional
employment and income to farming community.
At the outset, I appreciate the efforts of the Department of Agriculture, particularly
Joint Director and their team in collection of information from various departments and
organizing District Level meetings which has led to finalize this report. I thank all the line
department officials for providing timely information on their concerned templates. I also
express my deep sense of gratitude to Sri. H.K.Patil, Hon’ble Minister for Rural
Development, Government of Karnataka and MP/MLAs for providing valuable suggestions.

PRADHAN MANTRI KRISHI SINCHAYEE YOJANA(PMKSY)
I. Introduction:
The major objective of PMKSY is to achieve convergence of
investments in irrigation at the field level, expand cultivable area under assured
irrigation, improve on-farm water use efficiency to reduce wastage of water,
enhance the adoption of precision irrigation and other water saving
technologies (More crop per drop), enhance recharge of aquifers and introduce
sustainable water conservation practices by exploring the feasibility of reusing
treated municipal waste water for peri-urban agriculture and attract greater
private investment in precision irrigation system.
PMKSY has been conceived by amalgamating ongoing schemes viz.,
Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP) of the Ministry of Water
Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation (MoWR, RD & GR),
Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) of Department of Land
Resources (DoLR) and the On Farm Water Management (OFWM) of
Department of Agriculture and Cooperation (DAC). The scheme will be
implemented by Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Rural
Development. Ministry of Rural Development is to mainly undertake rain water
conservation, construction of farm pond, water harvesting structures, small
check dams and contour bunding etc., MoWR, RD &GR, is to undertake
various measures for creation of assured irrigation source, construction of
diversion canals, field channels, water diversion/lift irrigation, including
development of water distribution systems. Ministry of Agriculture will
promote efficient water conveyance and precision water application devices like
drips, sprinklers, pivots, rain-guns in the farm “(Jal Sinchan)”, construction of
micro-irrigation structures to supplement source creation activities, extension

activities for promotion of scientific moisture conservation and agronomic
measures.
Programme architecture of PMKSY will be to adopt a ‘decentralized
State level planning and projectised execution’ structure that will allow States to
draw up their own irrigation development plans based on District Irrigation Plan
(DIP) and State Irrigation Plan (SIP). It will be operative as convergence
platform for all water sector activities including drinking water & sanitation,
MGNREGA, application of science & technology etc. Through comprehensive
plan, State Level Sanctioning Committee (SLSC) chaired by the Chief Secretary
of the State with the authority to oversee its implementation and sanction of
projects.
The programme will be supervised and monitored by an Inter-Ministerial
National Steering Committee (NSC) will be constituted under the Chairmanship
of Prime Minister with Union Ministers from concerned Ministries. A National
Executive Committee (NEC) constituted under the Chairmanship of Vice
Chairman, NITI Aayog to oversee programme implementation, allocation of
resources, inter-ministerial coordination, monitoring &performance assessment,
addressing administrative issues etc.,
Components and responsible Ministries/ Departments are as follows:
1. AIBP by MoWR, RD &GR: To focus on faster completion of on-going
Major and Medium Irrigation including National Projects.
2. PMKSY (Har Khet ko Pani) by MoWR,RD& GR: Creation of new water
sources through Minor Irrigation (both surface and ground water).Repair,
restoration and renovation of water bodies; strengthening carrying capacity of
traditional water sources, construction rain water harvesting structures (Jal
Sinchan); Command area development, strengthening and creation of
distribution network from source to the farm. Improvement in water

management and distribution system for water bodies will take advantage of
available source, which is not utilised to its fullest capacity (deriving benefits
from low hanging fruits).
3. PMKSY (Watershed) by Dept. of Land Resources, MoRD Water harvesting
structures such as check dams, nala bund, farm ponds, tanks etc. Capacity
building, entry point activities, ridge area treatment, drainage line treatment, soil
and moisture conservation, nursery raising, afforestation, horticulture, fodder
development, livelihood activities for the asset-less persons and production
system & microenterprises for small and marginal farmers etc.,Effective rainfall
management can be done through field bunding, contour bunding/trenching,
staggered trenching, land levelling, mulching etc.,
4. PMKSY (Per drop more crop) by Dept. of Agriculture & Cooperation, MoA
Programme management, preparation of State/District Irrigation Plan, approval
of annual action plan, Monitoring etc., Promoting efficient water conveyance
and precision water application devices like drips, sprinklers, pivots, rain-guns
in the farm (Jal Sinchay).Topping up of input cost particularly under civil
construction beyond permissible limit(40%), under MGNREGA for activities
like lining inlet, outlet, silt traps distribution systematic. Construction of micro
irrigation structures to supplement source creation activities including tube
wells and dug wells (in areas where ground water is available and not under
semi critical /critical /over exploited category of development) which are not
supported under PMKSY (WR), PMKSY (Watershed) and MGNREGA.
Secondary storage structures at tail end of canal system to store water
when available in abundance (rainy season) or from perennial sources like
streams for use during dry periods through effective on-farm water management
Water lifting devices like diesel/ electric/ solar pumpsets including water
carrying pipes.

Extension activities for promotion of scientific moisture conservation and
agronomic measures including cropping alignment to maximize use of available
water including rainfall and minimise irrigation requirement (Jal samrankshan)
Capacity building, training for encouraging potential use of water source
through technological, agronomic and management practices including
community irrigation awareness campaign on water saving technologies,
practices, programmes etc., organisation of workshops, conferences, publication
of booklets, pamphlets, success stories, documentary, advertisements etc.,
Improved/innovative distribution system like pipe and box outlet system with
controlled outlet and other activities of enhancing water use efficiency.
District Irrigation Plans (DIPs)
District Irrigation Plan (DIP) shall be the cornerstone for planning and
implementation of PMKSY. DIP will identify the gaps in irrigation
infrastructure after taking into consideration the District Agriculture Plans
(DAPs) already prepared for Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) vis-à-vis
irrigation infrastructure currently available and resources that would be added
during XII Plan from other ongoing schemes (both State and Central), like
Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme
(MGNREGA), Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), Rural Infrastructure
Development Fund (RIDF), Member of Parliament Local Area Development
(MPLAD) Scheme, Member of Legislative Assembly Local Area Development
(MLALAD) Scheme, Local body funds etc. The gaps identified under Strategic
Research & Extension Plan (SREP) be used in preparation of DIP.DIPs will
present holistic irrigation development perspective of the district outlining
medium to long term development plans integrating three components viz.,
water sources, distribution network and water use applications incorporating all
usage of water like drinking& domestic use, irrigation and industry. Preparation
of DIP will be taken up as joint exercise of all participating departments. DIP

will form the compendium of all existing and proposed water resource network
system in the district.
The DIPs may be prepared at two levels, the block and the district. Keeping
in view the convenience of map preparation and data collection, the work would
be primarily done at block level. Block wise irrigation plan is to be prepared
depending on the available and potential water resources and water requirement
for agriculture sector prioritising the activities based on socio-economic and
location specific requirement. In case of planning is made based on basin/sub
basin level, the comprehensive irrigation plan may cover more than one district.
The activities identified in the basin/sub-basin plan can be further segregated
into district/block level action plans.
i. Background
Hon’ble President in his address to the joint Session of the Parliament of
16th Lok Sabha indicated that “Each drop of water is precious. Government is
committed to giving high priority to water security. It will complete the long
pending irrigation projects on priority and launch the ‘Pradhan Mantri Krishi
Sinchayee Yojana’ with the motto of ‘Har Khet Ko Paani’.
There is a need for seriously considering all options including linking of
rivers, wherever feasible; for ensuring optimal use of our water resources to
prevent the recurrence of floods and drought. By harnessing rain water through
‘Jal Sanchay’ and ‘Jal Sinchan’, we will nurture water conservation and ground
water recharge. Micro irrigation will be to ensure ‘Per drop-More crop’. Out of
about 141 ml ha of net area sown in the country, about 65 million hectare (or
45%) is presently covered under irrigation. Substantial dependency on rainfall
makes cultivation in unirrigated areas a high risk, less productive profession.
Empirical evidences suggest that assured or protective irrigation encourages
farmers to invest more in farming technology and inputs leading to productivity

enhancement and increased farm income. The over-reaching vision of Pradhan
Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) will be to ensure access to some
means of protective irrigation to all agricultural farms in the country, to produce
‘per drop more crop’, thus bringing much desired rural prosperity.
ii. Vision
To utilize the available water resources in the district to the maximum
extent in an efficient way to meet the basic needs of every living being and
enhancing the livelihoods of rural population to the maximum extent, thus
alleviating poverty in a sustainable way without compromising the interests of
future generations.
iii. Objective
Following are the objectives:
A. Enhance the physical access of water on the farm and expand cultivable area
under assured irrigation (Har Khet ko pani).
B. Integration of water source, distribution and its efficient use, to make best
use of water through appropriate technologies and practices.
C. Improve on-farm water use efficiency to reduce wastage and increase
availability both in duration and extent.
D. Enhance the adoption of precision-irrigation and other water saving
technologies (More crop per drop).
Enhance the physical access of water on the farm and expand cultivable
area under assured irrigation (Har Khet ko pani).
Integration of water source, distribution and its efficient use, to make best
use of water through appropriate technologies and practices.
Improve on-farm water use efficiency to reduce wastage and increase
availability both in duration and extent.

technologies (More crop per drop).

Enhance recharge of aquifers and introduce sustainable water
conservation practices.
Ensure the integrated development of rain fed areas using the watershed
approach towards soil and water conservation, regeneration of ground
water and arresting runoff.
Promote extension activities relating to water harvesting, water
management and crop alignment for farmers and grass root level field
functionaries.
Explore the feasibility of reusing treated municipal wastewater for peri-
urban agriculture.
iv. Strategy /approach
Creation of new water sources; repair, restoration and renovation of
defunct water sources; construction of water harvesting structures,
secondary & micro storage, ground water development
Developing/augmenting distribution network where irrigation sources
(both assured and protective) are available or created;
Promotion of scientific moisture conservation and run off control
measures to improve ground water recharge so as to create opportunities
for farmer to access recharged water through shallow tube/dug wells;
Promoting efficient water conveyance and field application devices
within the farm viz., underground piping system, Drip & Sprinklers
Encouraging community irrigation through registered user groups.
Farmer oriented activities like capacity building, training and exposure
visits, demonstrations, farm schools, skill development in efficient water and
crop management practices (crop alignment) including large scale awareness on
more crop per drop of water through mass media campaign, exhibitions, field
days, and extension activities through short animation films etc.,

CHAPTER I
General Information of the District.
1.1. District profile:
In ancient times, Gadag was known as Kritapuri, after a sage named
Kritu. This sage, with the help of Lord Veeranarayana, is said to have
vanquished a demon that was causing terror in this region. It is said that the sage
requested Lord Veeranarayana to stay on here and he agreed and so the
Veeranarayana Temple came into being. Gadag was ruled at different stages by
the Banas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, and Hoysalas. There are many famous
temples built by these different dynasties, the main style of these temples is
Western or Kalyani or Chalukyan. During the reign of Aurangzeb, Gadag was
conquered by the Mughals, and during this period, the famous Jumma Masjid
was built. Gadag is also home to many great poets and famous individuals. The
immediate association that Gadag would have for Kannadigas would be the poet
Narayanappa, better known as Kumaravyasa. He wrote the popular Kannada
version of the Mahabharatha, sitting in front of the image of Lord
Veeranarayana in the Veeranarayana Temple.
Gadag district lies in the central part of Northern Karnataka, at 15015’ and
150 45’ North latitudinal and 75020’ and 75047’ East longitudes. Out of total
4.65 lakh ha geographical area in the district, Gadag and Ron taluks larger
share of geographical area (1.10 to 1.29 lakh ha), while Mundargi, Naragund
and Gadag taluks have lesser than 1.0 lakh ha geographical area each (Fig
1.1). Gross cultivated area considering double cropped area differs
significantly among different taluks. Out of net cultivated area of 3.77 lakh
ha, nearly 1.60 lakh ha area is cropped twice in year bringing the gross
cultivated area up to 5.38 lakh ha with a district cropping intensity of 142 %.

Gadag district has five taluks namely, Gadag, Mundargi, Nargund, Ron
and Shirhatti. Gadag taluk has 27 gram panchayats covering 64 villages in 2
hoblies, Mundargi taluk has 19 gram panchayats covering 58 villages in two
hoblies, Naragund taluk has 13 gram panchayats covering 35 villages in two
hoblies, Ron taluk has 35 gram panchayats covering 93 villages in three
hoblies, and Shirhatti taluk has 28 gram panchayats covering 87 villages in
two hoblies . The district has a total of 337 villages. There are 9 urban
centres, 2 each in Gadag and Shirhatti taluks, 3 in Ron taluk and one each in
Naragund and Mundargi taluks.

All five taluks of Gadag district are part of Northern Dry Zone of
Karnataka. The zone has characteristics such as low annual rainfall (631 mm),
medium to deep black soil (except large part of Gadag taluk) mean maximum
temperatures touching 37-38 o C during summer and moderate 30-32 o C during
other months. Low temperatures can touch even 14-15 o C for brief period
during winter. South west monsoon brings 56 percent of the annual rainfall in
the district. Remaining 44 percent rain is received by north east monsoon,
spread from October to December. Negligible rainfall occurs during summer.
Entire district is principally a plain region with no major mountainous region.
With scanty rainfall, the district has limited share of forest area, which is
principally shrubby. Only about 7 percent of the total geographical area is
covered by forests and a large part of it belongs to the shrub category. There is
no major irrigation project in the district. The Right Bank canal of Malaprabha
Project located in neighbouring Savadatti taluka of Belgaum district irrigates
the entire Nargund taluka (all villages) and portion of Ron taluka (12 villages).
The other sources of irrigation include tanks, wells, bore wells and lift
irrigation. About 26.5percent of the net area sown has irrigation facilities. Out
of irrigated area, canals account for 33 percent and tube wells account for 49.9
per cent of the irrigated areas. The irrigation by tanks is meagre and negligible,
although district has 30 tanks. The district has 160143ha under irrigation by
different sources, out of net cultivated area of 377535 ha.
As per 2011 census, Gadag has 1/3rd share of the district’s population and
Naragund has lowest population (100623) out of district’s total population of
10.65 lakh (Table1.1). Major population (6.85 lakh) lives in rural areas-
indicating the importance of rural economy in the district.
Major part of district is covered by entisols and vertisols and small area
covered by alfisols. The overall pH and EC in the district is normal, while

organic carbon status in most part of district is below 0.5%.But, the most part of
district is deficient in phosphorus (<5ppm) and sufficient in potassium(>50
ppm). Other nutrients like available Sulphur ( <10ppm), available zinc (< 0.75
ppm) are deficient and available boron (>0.58ppm) is sufficient in the entire
district. Organic carbon status of some areas in northern part of Gadag and
western/ north eastern part of Mundargi taluks is lesser than 0.5%. Large part of
Gadag taluk has sufficient in available potassium (> 50 ppm). Similarly,
majority of Gadag, , Ron and Naragund taluks have soil deficient in available
sulphur ( <10 ppm). Large area in all taluks of Gadag district have soil
deficient in available zinc ( <0.75 ppm). Major part of Gadag district have
soil sufficient in available boron (>0.58 ppm) except in some north eastern part
of Ron and south-eastern part of Mundargi is deficient in available boron (
<0.58 ppm).
The district is primarily agrarian, because major economic activity is
agriculture and allied activities involving more than 64 % of district’s
population settled in rural areas. Major land use in the district is for cultivation
and other allied activities. Horticulture, sericulture, animal husbandry and
fisheries are major allied activities are supplementary to agricultural activities.
Traditionally, the rural population have engaged themselves in dairying and
horticulture, while sericulture is recently added to their profession.

1.2. Demography:
1.2.1: Population:
The Total population of Gadag district is 1064570(Table1.2). The Male
population of the district is 537147and Female population is 527423. Among
the taluks, Gadag taluk has the highest population in the district,

367258(34.5%), followed by Ron, 264123 (24.8%), Shirhatti 200669 (18.8%)
and Mundargi131897 (12.4%). Naragund taluk has the lowest population of
100623 (9.4%). Schedule Caste population in the district is 174196 (16.4%)
and that of Schedule Tribe population is 61654(5.8%). Population of Schedule
Caste and schedule tribe is highest in Gadag taluk (52131 and 17632
respectively) and lowest in Naragund (9892 and 4593 respectively).

1.2.2: Rural and Urban Population:
The district has a rural population of 685261 (64.4%) and the urban
population of 379309 (35.6%). Ron taluk has the highest rural population of
191763, followed by Gadag (175883), Shirhatti (146305) and Mundaragi
(106978). Lowest Rural population is in Naragund taluk (64332). Whereas,
Urban population is highest in Gadag taluk (191375), followed by Ron
(72360), Shirhatti (54364) and Naragund (36291). Lowest urban population is
in Mundargi (24919). Details are furnished in Table 1.3 and Fig 1.3.

1.3. Biomass and Livestock:
The total cattle and buffaloe population in the district is 203644 (Table1.5
and Fig 1.5). The cattle population is 142655 (70.%) and buffaloe population is
60989 (29.1%). Ron taluk has the highest share of district’s cattle and buffaloe
population of 58990 (29.0 %), followed by Gadag with 41572 (20.4%),
Shirhatti with 39274 (19.3%) and Mundargi with 35852 (17.6%). Naragund
has the lowest cattle and buffaloe population of 27956 (13.7%) in the district.

The district has totally, 372160 small animals viz., sheep, goat, pigs and
ducks.and 156079 poultry birds. Of the small animals, sheep account for 69.6%
and goats account for 28.6%. Pigs and ducks account for 1.8% of the
population. Ron taluk has the highest small animals 108510 (29.2 %), followed
by Shirhatti with 85960 (23.1%), Mundargi with 80783 (21.7%) and Gadag
with 77686 (20.9%). Naragund has the lowest small animal population of
19221 (5.2%). Ron taluk has the highest poultry 67640 (43.3%), followed by
Gadag with 47545 (30.5%), Shirhatti with 16697 (10.7%) and Mundaragi with
16082(10.3%). Naragund has the lowest poultry population of 8115 (5.2%).

1.4 Agro-Ecology, Climate, Hydrology and Topography:
1.4.1 Agro-ecology
All five taluks of Gadag district are part of Northern Dry Zone of
Karnataka. The zone has characteristics such as low annual rainfall (631 mm),
medium to deep black soil (except large part of Gadag taluk) mean maximum
temperatures reaching 37-38 o C during summer and moderate 30-32 o C during
other months. Low temperatures can touch even 14-15 o C for brief period
during winter, otherwise winters are severe.
1.4.2 : Climate
The district represents typical dry land ecosystem, as all the taluks of
Gadag have average annual rainfall ranging from 546 to 701 mm in 38 to 47
rainy days. The north-east monsoon contributes nearly 44% and prevails from
October to early December. And about 56% precipitation takes place during
south –west monsoon period from June to September. The cropping season in
rainfed agriculture regions of the district is mainly restricted by number of
rainy days. As the rainfall is bimodal and peak rainfall is during July and

August. Kharif season is predominant and rabi season is unsure as far as
cropping is concerned. The whole district represents uniform rainfall pattern.
The cropping in rabi season is always open to the risk of moisture deficits.
The maximum average normal temperatures range between 37.60 C to
38.50 C, Mundargi and Shirhatti taluk being hotter than other taluks. Similarly,
Minimum average normal temperatures range between 14.010C to 15.60 C,
Gadag and Ron being cooler than other parts of the district. However, peak
summer temperatures in Mundargi and Shirhatti taluks can go upto 400 C and
lowest temperatures during winter may go down to 110 C for short periods.

1.4.3 Hydrology
The district is underlain by hard rock formations like granites, gneisses,
and schists. These rocks have no primary porosity or permeability. Ground
water occurs under phreatic conditions in weathered zone of these formations.
At higher depths ground water occurs under confined to semi-confined
conditions in fractures and joints as well as formation contacts, its movement is
controlled by the interconnectivity and geometry of the structurally week zones
called lineaments. In the district the ground water is developed through
dugwells and dug cum bore wells up to 20 m depth.

Pre-monsoon (May) depth of water level ranges from 4.22mbgl to
23.67mbgl. Patches of 2-5 mbgl water level category can be noticed in
Mundargi taluk and a small patch in Shirhatti taluk is recorded more than
20mbgl depth of water level. Parts of Gadag, Mundargi and Shirhatti taluks
show 5-10m range depth. A patch of Nargund taluk shows 5-10mbgl range
depth of water level. Major parts of the district is occupied by 10-20mbgl range.
During post monsoon (Nov) ground water levels ranges from minimum of
5.30mbgl at Chabbi station to maximum of 24.70m at Kotbal station, 2-5mbgl
depth to water level category is observed in parts of Mundargi and Shirhatti
taluks. 5-10mbgl water level category is observed in major parts in Shirhatti,
Gadag, Mundargi and Nargund taluks. 10- 20mbgl depth water level category is
observed in major part in Ron taluk and parts of Gadag, Mundargi, Shirhatti,
Nargund taluks.
1.4.4 : Topography:
The lands of the district can be broadly divided into three soil slope
classes i) level to nearly level lands (0-1% slope), ii) very gently sloping
lands (1-3% slope) and iii) gently sloping lands (3-8% slopes). Lands with very
gentle slope(Fig 1.8) are predominant (77.8%) and occur in all the taluks.
Lands that are gently sloping occur mainly in Shirhatti, Mundargi and Ron
taluks, were as level to nearly level lands in valleys are mainly found in
Nargund, Ron, Mundargi and Shirhatti taluks and in a small patch in Gadag
taluk. The lands of the district that are very gently sloping cover an area of
362045 ha (77.82 %) followed by gently sloping lands which are spread over an
area of 66371 ha (14.27 %) and level to nearly level lands in the valleys occur in
an area of 35964 ha ( 7.73 %).

1.5 :Soil Profile
The soils of Gadag district are mainly Vertisols, Inceptisols, Alfisols,
Entisols and Aridisols. Vertisols occur on an area of 214216 ( 46.39 %) mainly
distributed in Gadag, Ron and Naragund taluks. The soils of the order
Inceptisols are found on an area of 142645 ha (30.89 %) in Mundargi, Gadag,
Naragund and Shirhatti taluks (Table1.8 and Fig 1.9). Soils of the order Alfisols
covering an area of 58080 ha (12.58 %) are found in Ron, Gadag and
Mundargi taluks. Entisols are found on an area 43429 ha (9.40 %) mainly in
Ron, Shirhatti and Mundargi taluks, while Aridisols cover an area of 1730 ha
(0.37 %) and occur in Ron taluk.
Vertisols are deep to very deep, moderately well drained to well drained,
calcareous cracking clay, in valleys and gently sloping interfluves with slight to
moderate erosion and in patches severely eroded. Inceptisols are shallow to
moderately shallow to moderately deep and at places deep, well drained,

gravelly clay to clay, occurring on gently sloping interfluves to rolling lands,
with moderate erosion. Alfisols are moderately deep to deep, well drained,
gravelly clay to clayey, on gently sloping to undulating interfluves, with low to
very low AWC, with slight to moderate erosion. Entisols are very shallow to
shallow and at places very deep, well drained, to somewhat excessively
drained, at places excessively drained, gravelly loam to loam, at places clayey
soils on rolling lands and ridges with very low AWC and with severe erosion
while Aridisols are Moderately deep, well drained, gravelly clay , on undulating
interfluves with moderate erosion and low AWC.

1.6 Soil Erosion
Soil erosion is a widespread threat to sustainable resource management.
Major causes of soil erosion include cultivation without proper soil and water
conservation measures, growing of crops not suitable for the situation,
denudation with no cover of vegetation, cultivation on moderate slopes,
degraded forests/pastures on steep slopes and poorly managed forest cover.
Appropriate soil conservation and land management techniques for the different
soil erosion classes were suggested. It is generally associated with agricultural
practices, leading to decline in soil fertility, bringing in a series of negative
environmental impacts and has become a threat to sustainable agricultural
production and water quality.

Soil erosion is one form of soil degradation. Soil erosion is a natural
process of degradation on all lands. The agents of soil erosion are water and
wind, each contributing a significant amount of soil loss each year. Soil erosion
may be a slow process that continues relatively unnoticed, or it may occur at an
alarming rate causing serious loss of top soil. The loss of soil from farmland
may be reflected in reduced crop production potential, lower surface water
quality and damaged drainage networks.
The soils of Gadag district are classified mainly under no or slight
erosion, moderately eroded and severely eroded classes (Fig1.10). The soils of
the district are mainly moderate in erosion occurring over an area of 302682 ha
( 65.06 %) in Naragund, Ron, Gadag and Mundargi taluks and in small area in
Shirhatti taluk. The soils that are severe in erosion are on an area of 118663 ha
( 25.51 %) mainly occurring in Shirhatti, Mundargi, Gadag and in a small area
in Ron taluk, while, soils with no or slight erosion cover an area of 43035 ha
( 9.25 %) occur in Gadag, Mundargi and Shirhatti taluks. Surface runoff is high
in 90.67 % area of the district that is moderately eroded to severely eroded,
resulting in loss of water, soil fertility and top soil. Necessary water
conservation measures are needed to be taken up to conserve water and soil in
the district.

Land Capability classes:
The lands of the district are classified under the land capability classes II,
III, IV and VI. Lands over an area of 329582 ha (70.84 %) of the district are
moderately good cultivable lands (class III) with moderate limitations of erosion
and soil mainly occurring in Ron, Nargund, Gadag, and Mundargi taluks and in
a small area in Shirhatti. Fairly good lands (class IV) are mainly in Shirhatti,
Gadag, Mundargi and in a smaller area in Ron and Naragund taluks over an area
of 117075 ha (25.16 %) with limitation of erosion and soil. Land that are well
suited for grazing and forestry (class VI) with limitations of erosion are found in
an area of 16594 ha (3.57 %) in Mundargi, Gadag and small area in Ron and
Naragund taluks. While good cultivable lands (class II) are in an area of 1129
ha (0.24 %) with limitation of soil found in Shirhatti taluk (Fig 1.11)

Land Irrigability classes:
The Land Irrigability classes in Gadag district are mainly Class 2, 3, 4
and 6. Lands that have severe limitations for sustained use under irrigation
(class 3) cover an area of 384753 ha (82.70 %) occurring mainly in Naragund,
Ron, Gadag, Mundargi and in a smaller area in Shirhatti taluks. Lands that are
marginal for sustained use under irrigation with limitations of soil (class 4)
occur in an area of 36309 ha (7.80 %) in Shirhatti, Mundargi and minor areas of
Gadag and Ron taluks. Lands that have moderate limitations for sustained
under irrigation with limitations of soil are in an area of 26723 ha (5.74 %)
occurring mainly in Gadag, Mundargi and Shirhatti taluks. (Fig 1.12)

Soil fertility status in Gadag district
The overall pH and EC in the district is normal, while organic carbon
status in most part of district is below 0.5%.But, the most part of district is
deficient in phosphorus (<5ppm) and major part of the district is sufficient in
potassium (>50 ppm). Other nutrients like available sulphur ( >10ppm),
available zinc (> 0.75 ppm) are in deficient status and available boron
(>0.58ppm) is in sufficient status in the entire district.
However, organic carbon status of some areas in northern part of Gadag
and western/ north eastern part of mundargi taluks is lesser than 0.5%
(Fig 1.13). Similarly, large part of Gadag taluk has sufficient available
potassium (> 50 ppm). Similarly, majority of Gadag, , Ron and Naragund taluks
have soils deficient in available sulphur ( <10 ppm). Large area in all taluks
of Gadag district have soil deficient in available zinc ( <0.75 ppm). Major
part of Gadag district have soil sufficient in available boron (>0.58 ppm)

except in some north eastern part of Ron and south-eastern part of Mundargi is
deficient in available boron ( <0.58 ppm).

1.7 : Land Use pattern:
Out of the total geographical area of 465715 ha in the district, 377535
ha is the net sown area (81.1%) and the forest area accounts for 32614 ha
(7.0%). Area sown more than once is 160711 ha and the cropping intensity
works out to142.

Geographical area is highest in Ron taluk 129091 (27.7%), followed by
Gadag 109751 ha (23.6%), Shirhatti 94913 ha (20.4%) and Mundaragi taluk
88398 (19.0%). Lowest geographical area is in Naragund 43562 (9.4%).
Gross cropped area is highest in Ron taluk 168485 (31.3%), followed by
Gadag 125224 (23.3%), Shirhatti 111003 (20.6%) andMundaragi 83685
(15.5%). Lowest gross cropped area is in Naragund taluk 49549 (9.2%). Net
sown area is highest in Ron taluk-119388 ha (31.6%), followed by Gadag -
101281ha (26.8%), Shirhatti 71838(19.0%) and Mundaragi 51823 (13.7%). Net
cultivated area is lowest in Naragund-33205 ha (8.8%), Whereas, area under
forest is highest in Mundaragi taluk with 17646 ha (54.1%), followed by
Shirhatti with 12943 ha (39.60%). In other taluks, area under forest is
negligible.
Out of net cultivated area of 377535 lakh ha, nearly 160711 ha area
is cropped twice in year bringing the total cultivated area up to 538246 ha
with a district cropping intensity of 142 %. Mundaragi has highest cropping
intensity of 161 % with 31862 ha under double cropping. Gadag has least
cropping intensity of 124 %. Taluk wise details are furnished in Table 1.9 and

CHAPTER II
DISTRICT WATER PROFILE
2.1. Area Wise, Crop Wise irrigation status:
Taluk wise, season wise, category wise irrigated and rainfed area details
in Gadag district is furnished at Appendix 2.1. Totally, agricultural crops are
cultivated in an area of 481058 ha. Under irrigated condition, agricultural
crops are cultivated in an area of 146361 ha (30.4 %) and under rainfed
condition in an area of 334697 ha (69.6 %). During kharif season, agricultural
crops are sown in an area of 205958 ha (42.8%), comprising 76450 ha (37.1 %)
under Irrigated and 129508 ha (62.9 %) under rainfed conditions. During rabi
season, field crops are cultivated in an area of 258700 (53.8%), comprising
53511 ha (20.7 %) under irrigated and 205189 ha (79.3%) under rainfed
conditions. During summer season, field crops are cultivated under irrigated
condition on an area of 16400 ha (%).
Horticultural crops are cultivated in an area of 57388 ha comprising
42354ha (73.8 %) under irrigated and 15034 ha (26.2 %) under rainfed
condition.
Mulberry is cultivated in a small area of about 250 ha in the district.
2.2. Production and productivity of major crops:
Season wise, crop wise production and productivity of various crops are
furnished at Appendix 2.2.As per the final estimates for 2014-15, total Cereal
production is 234608 tonnes, Pulses 66133 tonnes and Oilseeds 57231 tonnes.
Regarding commercial crops, Cotton production is 263872 tonnes, Sugarcane
197191 tonnes and Tobacco 4 tonnes. Cereals (3393 Kg/ha) and Oilseeds (1075

Kg/ha) have recorded highest productivity during Summer season and pulses
(636 Kg/ha) during rabi season.
Average productivity of important crops in the district is as follows:
Cereals: Rice-2936 Kg/ha, Maize-2656 Kg/ha, Wheat-1135Kg/ha,
Pulses: Field bean-909 Kg/ha,Bengalgram-671 Kg/ha, Redgram-496 Kg/ha
Oilseeds: Groundnut-837 Kg/ha and Sunflower 732Kg/ha.
Commercial crops: Cotton 450 Kg/h and Sugarcane 111 Tons/ha.
2.3. Irrigation based classification:
The district is a part of Krishna basin, divided in to two sub basins
namely Malaprabha , and Tungabhadra. These have an area of 2768 km2 and
1889.2 km2 respectively. A tributary of Malaprabha river, Bennehalla flowing
parallel to the main river joins Malaprabha river in Ron taluk which is located
in north eastern part of the district.
The net irrigated area of the district is 160143 ha and the gross irrigated
area is188965 ha. Partially irrigated area mainly through wells and tube wells
accounts for 25560 ha.

CHAPTER III
WATER AVAILABILITY
3.1. Status of Water availability:
Gadag district was a part of erstwhile Dharwad district dominated
by dry eco-system with scanty water resources. It comprises 5 taluks
belonging agro-ecological zone No. 3 with uniform climatic characters. The
average rainfall of the district varies from 546 mm in Mundargi taluk to 701
mm in Ron taluk. The number of rainy days in the district varies from 38 to
47 days. The rainfall varies drastically across the year with consistent
droughts prolonging through 3 to 4 years.
The general situation of water availability in Gadag district is
dominated by the limited rainfall and variations in the rainfall have caused
the failures of agriculture frequently. The district is dependent on the tube
wells and canals for the purpose of irrigation. The canal irrigated area is
presently available on 59111 has spread to Naragund and Ron taluks by
Malaprabha reservoir. Mundargi, Shirhatti and Gadag taluks are expected
to be irrigated in next few years by ongoing lift irrigation programmes
from Tungabhadra river. Totally, the district is expected to have 1.25 lakh
ha. canal irrigated areas, after the completion of ongoing projects, out of
the total irrigated area of 1.6 lakh ha in the district (Table3.3).
The main source of irrigation for Gadag district is from
Malaprabha Reservoir supplying water to Naragund and Ron taluks
(0.18245 BCM), Lift Irrigation Scheme of Singatalur to Mundargi taluk
(0.044515 BCM- irrigating 8903 ha) and Itagi Sasalwad Lift Irrigation
Project to Shirhatti taluk (0.009915 BCM – irrigating 1983 ha) as well as
micro irrigation from Mundaragi and Gadag branch canal.The district

has as many as 30 tanks with an irrigable area of 260 ha, although their
combined storage capacity is 0.0000582 BCM. The total water available
through surface water in Gadag district for irrigation purpose at present is
0.23688 BCM (Table 3.1).

3.2 Status of Ground water availability:
As per the ground water estimation studies, the whole of Ron taluk, 85% of
Nargund taluk and 71 % of area of Gadag taluk are over exploited, as

indicated in Table 3.2. The safe area for ground water exploration is limited in
all the taluks except Shirhatti taluk to extent of 15 to 27 %, thereby, restricting
the success of bore wells in future. In Shirhatti taluk, the entire area is safe for
further ground water exploration (Table 3.2, Fig. 3.1). The water quality
deterioration in many parts of the district can be attributed partly to the
natural means of decomposing of host rock/aquifer by prevailing weather
condition over the year or indiscriminate dumping of wastes on the land and
usage of chemical fertilizers in the agricultural land by human activities also
leads to groundwater deterioration.

3.3. Status of Command area:
In Gadag district, Nargund and Ron taluks are irrigated by Malaprabha
Right Bank Canal. Totally an area of 59,111 ha is irrigated through MRB
canal, comprising 30,409. ha in Nargund taluk and 28,702.41 ha in Ron taluk.
Under Singatalur lift irrigation Scheme, Mundargi is expected to receive
irrigation on an area of 5097.75 ha and Itagi Sasalwada lift irrigation scheme is
expected to provide irrigation to 1983 ha in Shirhatti taluk. Gadag and
Mundargi taluks are expected to be irrigated by micro irrigation from
Thungabhadra River, respectively to the tune of 27,055 ha and 32,344 ha. The
net percentage of area irrigated through canal may reach 71.63 % of the total
irrigated area (Table 3.3). The availability of canal water from Lift Irrigation
Schemes and Reservoirs is essentially restricted to single season taken up as a
measure of drought mitigation.

3.4. Existing type of irrigation:
The total net irrigated in the district is to the tune of 160143 ha. This is
mainly distributed in Ron taluk (44,081 ha), Nargund taluk (35,138 ha), Gadag
taluk (29648ha), Mundargi taluk (29,293 ha)and Shirhatti (21,983 ha). Canal
irrigated area is in Naragund taluk (30,409 ha), Ron (28702 ha). and Gadag
taluk (27,055 ha). The major tube well irrigated area is in the taluks of
Shirhatti (17,285 ha), Mundargi (16,444 ha), Ron (12,595 ha), Gadag (2411 ha),
and Nargund (1184 ha) (Table 3.4). Though there are 30tanks and 3772 Open
wells, only 260 ha and 349 ha, respectively are irrigated from these two sources.

3.5 Water available from various sources:
Water is available from underground water (as per Central Underground
Board Booklet, 2013) and canals (major and medium) and lift irrigation
schemes. Total water available for the district from underground tube wells is
0.22914 BCM and these wells are safe in Shirhatti taluk only. In taluks of Ron,
Naragund and Gadag, most of the area is over exploited. There is less scope for
further improvement unless proper recharge structures are created. Water from
irrigation tanks (maintained by Zilla Panchayats and Minor Irrigation
Departments) and other water bodies is not available. Here also, efforts are to be
made to recharge these tanks for utilization – mostly for drinking, industrial or
other purposes (Table 3.4). Further, water from canals is providing drinking
water facility to some of the taluks. Water available through canals (major and
medium) and lift irrigation schemes is 0.23688 BCM and this water is used for
irrigation, drinking and other purposes in taluks of Mundargi, Naragund and
Ron.

CHAPTER IV.
WATER REQUIREMENT/ DEMAND - GADAG DISTRICT
Gadag district has a total geographical area of 465715 ha receiving an
annual precipitation of 63.1 cm. Shirhatti, Ron and Gadag taluks receive
relatively higher rainfall of 71.0 to 63.6 cm, while, the rainfall is relatively
lower in Naragund and Mundargi taluks (54.6 cm to 58.8 cm). Most of rain
(58.9%) is received during south west monsoon (June to September), followed
by rains during October to December (north-east rains). The south west
monsoon sustains agricultural activity in most parts of the state, as large
proportion of agriculture is rainfed farming. Taking geographical area and
rainfall into consideration, available water due to precipitation is 3.044533BCM
in Gadag district.
4.1. Water Demand for domestic need:
A number of factors like climate, culture, food habits, work and working
conditions, level and type of development, and physiology determine the
requirement of water. The per capita water requirement in urban areas is more
than that in the rural areas. As per the Bureau of Indian Standards, IS:1172-
1993, a minimum water supply of 200 liters per capita per day (lpcd) should be
provided for domestic consumption in cities with full flushing systems.
IS:1172-1993 also mentions that the amount of water supply may be reduced to
135 lpcd for the LIG and the economically weaker sections (EWS) of the
society and in small towns [Modi, 1998].
For district as whole, water demand is 0.054407089BCM in 2015 (Table
4.1). During 2015, water requirements for domestic use in Gadag, Ron and
Shirhatti taluks were relatively higher (0.0187926 to 0.010249 BCM), while it
was lower in taluks of Mundargi and Naragund (0.006732 to 0.005143 BCM).
The water requirements in these taluks corresponded to the prevalent

population. With projected growth of population of 9% during 2011 to 2020, the
domestic water requirements in different taluks of Gadag district followed the
same trend (Table 4.1, Fig. 4.1).
Thus, domestic water requirement is projected at 0.0569501 BCM in
2020 from the present consumption level of 0.0544071 BCM during 2015
(Table 4.1, Fig. 4.1).

4.2. Water requirement for crops: Field/horticultural/plantation crops grown
in Gadag district are cotton, maize, groundnut, (both in Kharif & rabi), jowar,
bajra, chillies, black gram, green gram, cowpea, avare, horse gram, sesamum
(in Kharif only), Jowar and Bengal gram (rabi only) under agriculture as well
as different fruit crops, and vegetable crops. For calculation of water
requirement of irrigated crops, following methodology is adopted based on
certain assumptions according to the recommendations of the NCA, 1976 and
methodology suggested by Bhaskar et al. (2016).

Irrigation water requirement considered for calculation purpose for
various crops are paddy (150 cm in rabi/summer, 100 cm in Kharif), maize - 60
cm, bajra/jowar - 45 cm, red gram - 70 cm, groundnut - 45 cm, other oilseeds -
40 cm, cowpea/green gram/other pulses - 40 cm, vegetable crops - 50 cm, and
fruit crops - 60 cm. From this, the water requirement of various crops and the
area of the crops grown under irrigation, irrigation water requirement for crops
has been worked out.
Total water requirement of crops is relatively higher in Ron (0.905452
BCM), followed by Shirhatti (0.514945 BCM), Gadag (0.454936 BCM) and
Mundargi (0.454419 BCM) .The crop water requirement is directly
proportional to the cropped area in different districts as well as natural
crops. Total water requirement of irrigated crops of the entire district is 1.93649
BCM, whereas, total water requirement of rainfed crops is 0.565899 BCM in
view of large area under crops (jowar, maize, pulses - green gram, bengal gram,
cotton, oilseeds - groundnut, sunflower) in taluks of Ron, Gadag, Mundargi and

Shirhatti. Water demand for total horticultural crops is 0.083076BCM for
Gadag district, of which major share goes to fruits (0.080819 BCM). Further,
water demand of total horticulture crops is more in Gadag, Ron and Shirhatti
taluks as compared to other taluks. The projected water demand for total crops
is also worked out for 2020, keeping 10% increase in irrigated area due to
efficient rain water use, more under area and other means. For Gadag district,
the projected total water demand for crops is 2.844008 BCM by 2020 as
compared to the present demand of 2.58546 BCM), which amounts to 10%
increase (Table 4.2, Fig. 4.2, 4.2a).

4.3. Water requirement of Livestock:
Water requirement for livestock and other animals namely - indigenous
cattle, cross bred cattle, draft animals/bulls/others, sheep, goats, pigs, duck, and
poultry, have been calculated separately with the corresponding population for
2012. The projected water requirement for livestock population at 2020 has also
been calculated separately for all live stocks. The total water requirement for
live stocks for 2012 and projected for 2020 is provided taluk wise in Table 4.3.
Total population of livestock and other animals in Gadag district is
749,246 during 2012 and their water requirement is 0.003777825BCM.
Considering the increase in the population of livestock at 5% from 2012 to
2020, their water demand would be 0.004344499BCM with corresponding
population of 861,633 (Table 4.3, Fig. 4.3). Water demand of livestock is more
in Ron, followed by Gadag, Shirhatti and Mundargi taluks, as reflection of
corresponding livestock population in these taluks.

Livestock population is projected to be increased by 5% between 2012 to 2020 census, due to
encouragement in the government policies and more support for integrated farming systems.
Though cattle population has decreased particularly in favour of indigenous cattle, this
reduction is compensated with increase in the density of cross bred animals and other animals
due to economic considerations.

4.4. Water demand for Industry
In Gadag district, total industrial water demand is put at 0.01234715
BCM at present (2015), whereas the projected water demand for 2020 is
0.012567975 BCM (Table 4.4).
It is necessary to augment the requirement of fresh water by undertaking
wastewater treatment and using it for horticulture, gardening, ash handling,
washing of ore, flushing toilets, cleaning, fire-fighting and dust suppression
activities. The industries must see a merit and an economical value in reusing
wastewater for purposes where water quality is not an important criterion.
There is need to take up water auditing to understand the complete water use
pattern in their operations and look for water saving measures.

Here rain water harvesting measures are to be created in the premises of the industries to
augment the water demand and also to recharge the bore well.
4.5. Water demand for power generation: No facility for power generation is
available in the district. There is no new proposal for power generation (Table
4.5).

4.6. Water demand for other public purposes:
Water is also required to be provided in public places like schools,
colleges, offices, public toilets, bus station, railway stations, theaters, hostels,
hotels, restaurants, hospitals, nurses’ homes and medical quarters, community
hall and all other public places. Here, it is very difficult to work out the water
demand for all these places, which require many parameters - number of person
involved in each activity, type facility available etc., It is assumed that 10% of
domestic requirement is considered as water demand for these public places.
The water demand for these public places amounted to 0.005440709 BCM in
2015, where as the water demand would be 0.005695008 BCM by 2020 (Table
4.6, Fig. 4.5).

4.7. Total water demand of the district for various sectors:
At present, water demand for all purposes in Gadag district is 2.661433 BCM,
of which major share goes to crops' demand of 2.58546 BCM (97.1%). The next
share of water demand is for domestic purposes amounting to 0.0544071 BCM
(2.0%). The water demand of livestock, industries and other purposes is around
0.9% of the total (Table 4.6, Fig. 4.4, 4.5).
Water demand for various sectors put together for 2015 is more in Ron
taluk, followed by Shirhatti, Gadag and Mundargi, while it is lower in

4.8. Water budgeting: Total water available from various sources of Gadag
district is 0.4660 BCM, of which, water accounted for surface water is 50.8%
(0.2369 BCM) and available underground water is 49.2% (0.22914 BCM).
Thus, total water availability for the district from all sources at present is
0.4660 BCM, which is less than the present requirement (2015) of 2.6614 BCM
(Table 4.7, Fig. 4.6, 4.7). There is negative balance of water, amounting to -
2.1954 BCM. This negative balance has been observed in all taluks. Similarly,
the water demand for 2020 is 2.9236 BCM, which is more than the water
available at present from all sources, i.e., 0.4660 BCM. There is negative
balance of water available amounting to -2.4576 BCM by 2020.
Thus, all efforts should be made to encourage water conservation
structures to enhance the underground recharge and rejuvenating tanks/lakes by
desilting and other means to hold more in tanks/lakes, etc, apart from exploring
the ways and means of getting surface stored water through lift irrigation
programmes.

CHAPTER V
STRATEGIC ACTION PLAN FOR IRRIGATION
Gadag district lies in the central part of Northern Karnataka, at 150 15’
and 150 45’ North latitude and 75020’ and 75047’ East longitudes. Gadag
district consist of five taluks namely, Ron, Shirhatti, Mundargi and Gadag. The
district covers a total geographical area of 4657 Sq. Kms or 465715 ha. All five
taluks of Gadag district are part of Northern Dry Zone of Karnataka. The zone
has characteristics such as low annual rainfall (631 mm), medium to deep black
soil (except large part of Gadag taluk).
As per 2011 census, population of Gadag district is 10.65 lakh. Gadag
taluk (367258) has the highest population in the district whereas, Nargund taluk
has the lowest population (100623). Nearly 64 per cent of the population (6.85
lakh) of Gadag district resides in rural areas- indicating the importance of rural
economy in the district.
Only about 32614 ha area is under forest accounting for 7 percent of the
total geographical area of the district. A large part of it belongs to the shrub
category. The district is deficient in forest wealth and the same holds true for the
fauna as well. The area classified as cultivable waste and permanent pastures is
3600 ha and accounts for less than 1 per cent of the geographical area. Net sown
area shares roughly 81 per cent (377535 ha) of the geographical area of the
district. The cropping intensity is 142 per cent.
There is no major irrigation project in the district. This is significant of
the vulnerability of the agricultural economy and emphasises the importance of
dry land farming in its overall economy. The Right Bank canal of Malaprabha
Project located in neighbouring Savadatti taluka of Belgaum district irrigates
the entire Nargund taluk (all villages) and portion of Ron taluka (12 villages).
The other sources are tanks, wells, bore wells and lift irrigation. The district has

160143 ha under irrigation (42.4 percent) by several means, out of total net
cultivated area of 377535 ha. Canals account for 53.8 percent and tube wells
account for 31.2 per cent of the total irrigated areas.
Ron, Nargund, Gadag and Mundargi, continue to dominate in sharing the
net irrigated area. They respectively share 27.5 %, 21.9 %, 18.5 and 18.3 % of
total irrigated area of the district. Shirhatti taluk remain irrigated to the extent
of 21983ha The area under bore well is high in Mundagri (16444 ha), Ron
(12595ha) and Shirhatti (17285 ha), as compared to other taluks. Bore well
density is higher in Ron (3776) and Mundargi (2475) taluks. Area irrigated
twice a year is limited to 28822ha resulting in irrigation intensity of roughly
118 % only. The gross irrigated area in the district is to the tune of 188965 ha.
Total natural ground water recharge in the entire district, enriching its
availability , is around 22102 HAM (hectare-metre)- with highest recharge
level in Ron (1062 HAM) and lowest in Naragund taluk (459 HAM). Out of
total recharge, 19966 HAM is drafted for irrigation and other purposes, resulting
into groundwater development of 93.92 %, (near complete utilization).
However, taluk wise ground water development is different. Ron (130 %) and
Naragaund (115 %), major part of Ron, Naragund and Gadag have a scenario
of over exploited underground water, as their ground water development is
more than 100% [ they remove more groundwater from aquifers than the net
annual recharge]. Only small part of Mundargi, Gadag and Naragund taluk
have a relatively safe position, as the ground water development in these regions
is lesser than 100%.
The district represents typical dry land situations, as all the taluks of
Gadag district have normal average annual rainfall ranging from 546 to 701 mm
in 38 to 47 rainy days. The cropping season in rain-fed agriculture regions of
the district is characteristically restricted by number of rainy days. As the

rainfall is bimodal and peak rainfall is during July and August. Kharif season is
predominant and rabi season is unsure as far as cropping is concerned. The
whole district represents uniform rainfall pattern. The cropping in rabi season is
always open to the risk of moisture deficits. Most common crops in the district
include Jowar, Wheat , Bajra, Gram, Tur, green gram, soybean, groundnut,
sunflower, sesamum & other Oilseeds, Cotton, Sugarcane and Forage crops.
Most important plantation/ horticultural crops of the district include onion and
dry chillies.
The total water availability for the district from all sources at present is
0.46602 BCM, which is less than the present requirement (2015) of 2.66143
BCM (Chapter IV). There is negative balance of water, amounting to -2.19541
BCM. This negative balance has been observed in all taluks. Efforts should be
made to encourage water conservation structures to enhance the underground
recharge and rejuvenating tanks/lakes by desilting and other means to hold more
in tanks/lakes, etc.,
Gadag district has more than 80 per cent of the cultivated area under rain-
fed agriculture except Nargund taluk where canal irrigation is available from
Malaprabha canal. The ambitious aim of PMKSY envisages the provision for
minimum protective irrigation, which can only improve the agricultural growth
in these rain-fed areas. This objective can be achieved by utilizing the rain water
more efficiently by harvesting structures like farm ponds, check-dams, barrages
and other surface structures.
The forthcoming Strategic Action Plan, prepared for each taluk
separately, will have to include the irrigation infrastructure for major irrigation,
minor irrigation, ground water recharge, harvesting of rain water, improvement
of irrigation efficiency and strengthening the adoption of micro-irrigation in the

district. The district and taluk-wise summary of Strategic Action Plans are
presented below.
PMKSY-DIP strategic action plan for Gadag envisages various activities
for creating as well as renovating water harvesting storage structures, recharge
structures, and expansion of water saving micro irrigation system to improve
the water use efficiency. It also suggests lining of main canals and distributaries
of the major and minor irrigation system. It is proposed to create additional
irrigation potential of 63522 ha in Gadag district. The total estimated cost for all
these interventions is estimated at Rs. 352152.58 lakh. The Taluk-wise strategic
action plans are shown in Tables 5.1 through 5.14.

CONCLUSION
Gadag district is a part of Northern dry zone, having a typical
dryland eco-system except parts of Nargund and Ron taluks
which have irrigation facilities from Malaprabha Right Bank
Canal. In view of frequent droughts coupled with high
temperature, soil and water conservation measures through
watershed approach, drought proofing is absolutely necessary to
ensure reasonable level of crop yields.
Strengthening water harvesting structures like farm ponds, check
dams, tanks, barrages, percolation tanks etc., are very essential to
harness rain water in this region.
The PMKSY has five major components wherein activities are to
be taken up by various departments such as Major Irrigation, Minor
Irrigation, PRED, Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry,
Urban Water Supply, Industries etc., so as to enhance the area
under irrigation and also provide additional funding.
Under AIBP (Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme), various
activities are proposed by major irrigation, minor irrigation
departments wherein incomplete are proposed to be taken up in
different taluks at an estimated cost of Rs. 516.84 crores.
MGNREGA is another important source of funding for employing
man-power to take up farm ponds, check dams, lining, bunding
etc., More than 20,000 activities are proposed in different taluks at
an estimated cost of Rs. 43.45 crores, through which an additional
area of 1550 ha are going to be created for new irrigation.

Another important component is Har Khet Ko Pani (HKKP)
wherein drip and sprinkler irrigation will be provided for an area of
39397 ha by incurring an expenditure of Rs. 2722.66 crores.
Per Drop More Crop is another activity wherein 12030 works are
suggested in different taluks through which an area of 11798 ha
will be covered with Rs. 74.25 crores budget.
Under PMKSY watershed component, many small works are
suggested through which 7405 ha additional area will be created
with an expenditure of Rs. 164.32 crores.
Overall, Gadag district will have an additional area under irrigation
by 2020 to an extent of 63,522 ha with a budgetary support of Rs.
3521.53 crores.
