APPENDIX-A: MASTER CLASSES – THEME DESCRIPTIONS
Theme-1: Leading Grid Modernization and Smart Customer Engagement: A 360 degree in-depth
review of business transformation triggered by the introduction of Smart Metering, the enabled
smart grid applications (Outage, Billing, Demand Response, Distribution Automation etc); and Big
Data, Analytics & Visualization. This course will begin with the foundation of Grid Modernization and
Smart Grid – the Smart Metering initiatives and the two-way communications that can be the
foundation for multiple applications and interactions with customers in a utility. This will begin with
visioning, strategy, roadmap, business case, digital architecture and relevant technologies. Using the
case study of PECO, a US utility, this course will outline how a utility can run this program from
beginning to end with successful outcomes, discuss best-practices around from engaging customers
to delivering accurate bills and ensuring utility, customer, regulatory and policy goals are met.
Global case studies will be presented and discussed. It will also address advanced applications that
can be built around Smart Metering infrastructure that facilitate better handling of outages and
service restoration, Distribution Automation, Demand Management etc. Course will also cover a
primer on Common Information Model (CIM) and its implementation roadmap for utilities in India.
Target Audience: Senior Officers from Utilities and Regulatory Commissions, Policy Makers,
Senior Government Officials, Engineers from IT, Automation, Metering, Customer Service and
Executives from Technology Companies, OEMs, Students and Faculty from Engineering and
Management Institutes, Technology Enthusiasts etc.
Tutors: Glenn Pritchard, Anant Venkateswaran, Pradeep Yemula, Rahul Tongia, Pablo Betancur
Theme-2: Leading Transition to a Smart City: A strategic 360-degree and in-depth review of the
current state and future direction of Smart City with its key aspects – Smart Utilities (Electric,
Water, Gas), Smart Transportation, Smart Buildings and Smart Market Enablement and Sustainability
are key components of a smart city. This course will be addressing strategic vision, roadmap and a
multi-dimensional plan to accomplish the goals of a Smart City Vision in the most cost effective and
efficient manner. This will not be a deep dive technology rather focusing on the what, why, how and
where to get the expected outcomes.
Target Audience: Senior Officers from Utilities and Regulatory Commissions, Policy Makers, Senior
Officials in-charge of Smart City programs, Engineers from IT, Automation, Metering, Customer
Service and Executives from Technology and Consulting Companies, OEMs, Students and Faculty from
Engineering and Management Institutes, Technology Enthusiasts etc.
Tutors: Mani Vadari, Girish Ghatikar, Larisa Dobriansky, Sapna Mongia, Alessandro Moscatelli
Theme-3: Leading Business Transformation with Smart Energy Solutions: A strategic 360-degree
update on the role of Integrated Energy Management and Distributed Energy Resources Integration -
Energy Efficiency, Demand Response, Distributed Energy Resources, Renewables, Microgrids etc., its
applications on driving new innovative business models that brings benefits for customers. Beginning
with Smart Energy Paradigm, Microgrid, Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), Conservation of Voltage
Reduction (CVR), Demand Side Management, this course will outline the different renewables and
DERs ( including PVs, EVs, storage etc.,) in the distribution grid and the grid integration of these
resources either in a utility owned or a third party owned paradigm. The unique challenges that
utilities face in integrating these resources to the grid (protection, automation, control,, power
quality and others) will also be discussed. This course will also introduce the interconnection
assessment methodology adopted by US utilities to integrate large amounts of DER in their service
territories.
Target Audience: Senior Officers from Utilities and Regulatory Commissions, Policy Makers, Senior
Government Officials, Engineers from IT, Automation, Metering, Customer Service and Executives
from Technology and Consulting Companies, OEMs, Microgrid and DER Technology Vendors, Students
and Faculty from Engineering and Management Institutes, Technology Enthusiasts etc.
Tutors: Ratan Das, Murali Baggu, Girish Ghatikar, Ravi Subramaniam

Introduction – Richard Schomberg, IEC & Sri Chandra, IEEE
2.1: What are the key mechanisms (internally) that you are using to analyse existing standards from the SDOs?
2.2: What best practices are you using (internally) to help you analyse existing standards from the SDO's?
How do you cross reference standards with your own specific needs for your regional smart grid requirements?
4.1: How do you loop-back to your findings to your regional/local stakeholders?
4.2: How do you loop-back to your findings to the international SDOs (IEC, IEEE, ISO, ITU, etc.)?
4.3: Would you have any proposals to describe your findings to the International SDO's as a “big picture” for a Smart Energy ecosystem including a well aligned portfolio of standards, instead of issuing a number of fragmented work items for example?
13:00 – 14:00 LUNCH in Banquet Dining
IEC Smart Energy SyC – results so far that helped our processes
• Put in place a platform in the IEC to close the loops
• Need to focus on specific needs of their region
• Micromanage is not good
• To understand where are the needs
• Where exchanges can happen
• Win/Win for SDOs and industry / regional organizations
IEEE : Smart Grid for Smart Cities
• Collaboration across multiple societies across IEEE
• Platform for global engagement for practitioners and research community
• Driving market relevant standards across the spectrum of ICT, Power and Software
