I was there shooting seg- ments for The Fishing DVD, a quarterly video fishing magazine that showcases angling locations and tech- niques from around the country. We were hosted by Trevor Hosie and Helen Mar- tin from Banubanu Retreat, and fished aboard Trevor’s seaworthy 8.5m plate alloy boat, MV Nomad. While tourist numbers de- cline significantly after the end of September, the next few months are a time of year eagerly anticipated by local Nhulunbuy anglers. During October the persistent trade winds finally begin to ease and seas regularly become ironing-board-flat, allowing trailer boat owners to head offshore and sample the world-class fishing that North East Arnhem Land is so famous for. No wonder the annual John Jones Game Fishing Classic is staged off Gove in early November each year. This popular event typically sees some outstanding light tackle ac- tion on sailfish, marlin, big mackerel, tuna and trevally. ‘‘The fishing here off Gove is great all year round,’’ Trevor Hosie told me during my recent visit to Banubanu. ‘‘I run fishing charters with a freshly-cooked lunch of the morning’s catch guaranteed, and I haven’t missed out yet. ‘‘But during the windy months, from May until Oct- ober, you often have to work much harder for your fish.’’ I had to agree with Trevor. We enjoyed a red-hot mack- erel bite and also landed plenty of reefies on our Squidgy soft plastics and Lucanus octa-jigs. ‘Nomad’ targets both the abundant reef species and also the superb light tackle sport and game fishing on of- fer. In addition, Trevor will drop anglers on nearby des- erted beaches and pristine sand-spits where they can en- joy lure casting and fly fish- ing. It’s a great way to spend a few days, and Helen’s su- perb cooking just caps it off! To find out more about Banubanu Wilderness Re- treat, visit: www.ecotourson- banubanu.com.au or phone 8987 8085.
