GOT IT
Thank you to the many K-2 parents who have already
returned the GOT IT surveys. We have had a great
response with most classes waiting for just one or two
more to come in. Please remember that we need to get
all of the surveys back - even if you think the program
is not for your child. Only a small number of children
can be involved in the program, but we need all surveys
back to ensure the integrity of the research.
Reading at MDPS
In recent years our school has implemented the L3
reading program in Kindergarten and Stage 1. the L3
program is for students who are 'learning to read'. It
focusses on teaching students to 'decode' text - to work
out what the words are and to read them fluently. We
have had great results from this program and training
for teachers in L3 will continue throughout 2013.
In addition to this we are also introducing the Focus On
Reading program to our school. This program
complements the L3 program beautifully. It targets
students who are 'reading to learn' and concentrates on
broadening students vocabulary and developing reading
comprehension. This year 24 teachers will be trained in
Focus On Reading.
Running these programs requires our teachers to
engage in many hours of professional development.
Some of this will happen in school time and some of it
will be after school. These are excellent reading
programs and will benefit all students in our school. Its
great that our teachers are willing to go the extra mile
to ensure they happen. If you have any questions about
these programs please talk to your child’s teacher.
You can help too! Encourage your child to read at
home. Mrs Uthmeyer and the support staff have put a
lot of work into setting up a whole school home reading
program. Please encourage your child to use it.

Essay planning
Kids often rush headlong into essay writing tasks without thinking through what is required. Effective essay
planning can involve brainstorming, mind-mapping, and organising notes depending on the question and
