Buddy dyerMayor

Moving orlando Forward

Campaign placards, yard signs, televised debates, and billboards are sure signs that municipal, state, and national

elections are in full swing. Locally, candidates are pounding pavements and knocking on doors to garner support from the constituents who will hopefully elect or re-elect them to public office. Orlando-born Mayor, John Hugh “Buddy” Dyer is among those racing towards the Mayor’s seat, as he campaigns to retain the posture he has held at the helm of “The City Beautiful” for almost a decade. Gospel Now caught up with Mayor Buddy Dyer in the middle of his campaign trail to discuss his vision to make Orlando a “world-class city,” and his priorities for the residents of Orlando.

Page 18: GospelNow 24th Edition

You’ve served Orlando as Mayor, since 2003. Why another term in office, and why now?

There is still work to finish on some of the long term investments we have been making for the city, such as completing the expansion of the Medical City at Lake Nona over the next 3 years by opening new hospitals, a medical research institute, retail shopping, and new housing; and starting in the next 27 months, SunRail, so we have transportation options. We are building a new performing arts center, so we can have world-class productions right in our city. With another term in office we will have laid the groundwork so our children can be video game designers, cancer researchers, doctors or even professional ballerinas right here in Orlando.

Since your original term in office, we have experienced global, national and local economic and housing issues. Have you had to make many modifications to your original goals for Orlando, to address what has happened in our local economy?

One of our central goals has been to make sure the city is run effectively and efficiently. That goal is true whether we are in good times or in bad. While other cities are mired in debt, raising taxes and having trouble meeting their obligations, Orlando has the lowest taxes of any major city in the state, has a balanced budget and violent crime is decreasing.

Despite our progress, it’s clear much work remains. When I talk to residents… I hear too many stories of people who want to work… but still can’t find a good job. My heart breaks when I see children in need because of this economy. Hearing economists say the recession is ending offers many of these families no comfort. As the storm clouds begin to part, I want these families to know our community is working relentlessly to help them make it through tough times. I want them to know we are fighting to make sure better days are ahead.

The stability of our local economy depends heavily on the success of our area’s tourism industry and the expansion of public-private partnerships. Give us a summary of where you feel Orlando stands in the market as it relates to its ability to thrive economically, and what needs to happen in order for Orlando to be positioned as an attractive destination community?

To have a truly successful economy, we need to build on the great tourism and entertainment options here, and help attract other quality jobs for the future. One way we are doing that is making Orlando a high tech hub, with good paying careers for the future. We

are working to expand medical and digital technology businesses in our area to revitalize Orlando. Knowing small businesses are critical to creating jobs, we partnered with our neighborhood businesses to create our Main Street program. Our five Main Street Districts are responsible for 278 new businesses… and more than 15-hundred new jobs. We also took bold steps as a government to eliminate unnecessary regulations and cut red tape at City hall. We cut the City’s transportation impact fees for small businesses looking to re-activate dormant property. In return, those businesses made an investment in our city of more than 5 million dollars and created more than 500 jobs in only one year. Knowing that the best way to create good jobs for our residents is to grow them ourselves… we continued to invest in entrepreneurship through our businesses incubators. We also worked with our partners at the county and state level to retain local companies… and attract new ones. Amcor Rigid Plastics, Signature Flight Support, Planet Hollywood, Row Sham Bow and Publix all have new or expanded homes in Orlando, creating hundreds of jobs.

Under your leadership, our city has evolved and accomplished many great things. What are you most proud of?

Collaboration is the driving force behind every success we’ve had in the last few years. It sounds simple, but it doesn’t happen everywhere. Washington has become paralyzed by divisiveness. While similar conflicts exist here, we flat-out refuse to get bogged down by politics or petty jurisdictional differences that would divide us. We have chosen, instead, to spend our energy building consensus and working together. Our residents expect and deserve no less.

Going forward, what are you envisioning as the ongoing plan to continue making Orlando an even greater place to live, work, and play?

Everything we do is geared to making Orlando a special place for those who choose to call it home. Our parks and lakes are an unknown treasure to people who are not from here and we need to cherish and keep those clean and accessible so our families and neighbors can use them.

What edge do you believe you hold over your three opponents?

I have a positive vision for where Orlando is going, a set of projects I am working to complete and a record of keeping taxes low, spending under control and running the city well.

14

Page 19: GospelNow 24th Edition

Orlando’s April 3rd election is what many are calling a city-only election because it stands separate from state and national elections. Is there any concern that the April 3rd voter turn-out will be impacted by the fact that the election sort of stands alone?

We want to ensure that people know about the election on April 3rd and turnout to vote, whether or not it is to support me for mayor or for another candidate or to vote in the city council races is less important than the people of Orlando showing up to the polls and making their voices heard.

Does your campaign have specific goals in motivating Orlando’s residents to participate in the electoral process?

Our campaign goal is to educate as many people as possible to vote in the City of Orlando's Election on April 3rd. We will have an extensive outreach effort that includes knocking on doors, making phone calls, reaching out to Community Leaders and attending Community events. It's important we talk to our friends and neighbors about the importance of voting early or on April 3rd. Early voting is taking place from March 26th - 31st at the Supervisor of Elections Office, 119 W. Kaley Street. The Campaign Office is located at 1516 E. Colonial Dr. Ste. 101. Please come by to visit, pick up a yard sign and volunteer!

With the strong possibility of another term in office on the horizon for you, where will your political aspirations and pursuits take you after another term?

I am focused on one thing, serving the people of Orlando as their mayor.

What personal strengths make you a re-electable candidate?

My ability to bring together and create a consensus and a vision of how to move ideas forward.

The time and commitment required to lead Orlando is great, how are you able to maintain the balance in the City, while maintaining the balance in your family?

I would say that this is a challenge that faces all working parents; but, for my family it takes time, patience and coordination. I am very fortunate to be blessed with a supportive wife and family. Karen and I work together to get our kids to events. We make sure one of us can be there to watch them and support them at their events as well. We work hard to schedule family time as much as we can.

I Did It In The Name Of Love Conference

After Love, Then What???

Great question! Pastor Jonathan McKnight and the Sanctuary of

Praise Ministries in Orlando opened up the door for discussion at the annual “I Did It In The Name Of Love” relationship conference recently, where worship services, workshops and a panel discussion focused on the critical components necessary to develop and maintain healthy relationships. Pastor Marvin Sapp, Apostle Dannie Williams, Bishop Dupree Cook, Pastor Alexis Freeman Stephens, and Pastor McKnight delivered challenging, yet hopeful messages to more than a thousand attendees seeking answers to the dilemmas that often accompany romantic relationships.

Willie Dean Brunson says she was on the verge of giving up

on life because of the trials and tribulations she found herself in. The 65-year old Jacksonville woman struggled to make the mortgage payment after suffering with severe asthma and other illnesses that made it difficult for Brunson to work. “When I couldn’t pay the mortgage it tore me to pieces,” said Brunson. “I was in and out of the hospital. The stress of losing my home was too much to handle,” she said.

Brunson has lived in her Ionia Street home for more than two decades. She raised six sons, mostly on her own and on a cook’s salary. “I’m not a stranger when it comes to dealing with challenges, I just rely on faith and perseverance and I believe my constant prayers sent me to NACA,” Brunson said. NACA is a HUD-certified non-profit. Its mission is to provide affordable housing opportunities. Brunson’s daughter told her mom that NACA has helped thousands of people like her save their homes for free.

Brunson prayed NACA would throw her a lifeline. NACA began to work with the bank. The monthly mortgage payment on Brunson’s Jacksonville home was $771.00 a month, at a 6% interest rate. After NACA worked on her case, Brunson prayed for the best.

One day, the Jacksonville mother opened the mail and couldn’t stop shaking… The documents revealed her mortgage was reduced by $420.88 a month at a 2% interest rate. Brunson’s prayers were answered. “I’m thankful to God and NACA. NACA, you saved my life.”

NACA will help homeowners and homebuyers during their free American Dream Tour in Florida this month. For all of the venues, along with documents needed and how to register, go to

Occupy Our

Community

Raising awareness about anything poses challenges within itself; but the insight and motivation fostered at the first Occupy Our Community

Meeting challenged audience members and panelists alike, to not only possess our community, but to improve it by making economic and sociological investments.

Bishop Allen Wiggins of the Hope Church of Orlando, along with his wife, Lady Deborah Wiggins and the entire Hope Church family hosted a diverse group of citizens in a three-hour roundtable discussion on the growth challenges of the Washington Shores community, as well as solutions for shaping a community that can deliver greater economic vitality.

This first in a series of forums was navigated by Business Broker and Advisor, Frank Mitchell, radio personality, Don Miller, and Pastor Sharon Riley; drawing business owners, community leaders, and residents to the table for an intellectually stimulating and innovative symposium. Community stakeholders, Allie Braswell (President of the Central Florida Urban League), Virginia Whittington (Director of Regional Partnerships with MetroPlan Orlando), Pastor Larry Mills (Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church), Pastor Derrick McRae (The Experience Christian Center), Clinton Salter (Washington Shores resident and Business and Construction Development Specialist), Tezlyn Figaro (Founder and CEO of The Allied Group), David Rucker (President of the Greater Washington Shores Area Association), and Dr. Robert Spooney (President and CEO of the African-American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida) led the panel discussion on how to transform the jewel of the Westside, while fostering a sense of pride and ownership.

Three days before the greatest love holiday in America, and one day before the 2012 Grammy Awards, the woman who made famous “The Greatest Love of All,” shockingly slipped into eternity, leaving fans grieving all around the world. The Grammy, Emmy, and Billboard Award-winning Whitney Houston’s passing took the world by surprise. She has entertained, and inspired billions around the globe for decades, making the impact of her untimely passing all the more heartbreaking.

One of the greatest female pop stars of her time, Whitney left a plethora of projects and productions that make her simply “unforgettable.” Rising from the choir to the charts, Whitney’s versatile voice and diverse style made her a favorite across genre lines, taking her from albums, to soundtracks, to the silver screen. One week following the announcement of her death, a globally-viewed, private homegoing service caught the attention of billions of on-lookers, who were brought to church for a final glance at the life of a woman, adored by so many.

As her platinum bier was hoisted upon the shoulders of the pall bearers who guarded her body, Whitney’s “I Will Always Love You,” made famous by the soundtrack for “The Bodyguard,” rang out like a reciprocating anthem to her fans; and in choral fashion, many fans responded,

26

Page 31: GospelNow 24th Edition

The stars on the streets were only outnumbered by the stars in the heavens during AllStar Weekend 2012. Here’s a star, there’s a star, everyplace you saw a star! Orlando’s Amway Center, the Orange County Convention Center, and a host of venues throughout the city served as event facilities for appearances, meetings, parties, and games during the star-studded annual basketball lover’s retreat. You could walk into a Boys and Girls Club and find an NBA player, or you could stand in line at Wal Mart and find another one. Locals and visitors embraced the opportunity to greet and even play alongside some of the world’s greatest athletes. The general consensus is that Orlando has been an ideal host for the AllStar Game; but, will the game return? More than likely. When? Nobody knows. More politically stated, in the words of NBA Commissioner David Stern, “I can’t say when.” Great job Orlando!!!

Rising stars grow quickly in popularity in a particular field; but what happens when the star grows quickly in several fields,

simultaneously? You end up with someone like Hannah Sylvia Douglas.

Nine-year old Hannah excels and exceeds expectations in the classroom and on the field. The Altamonte Christian School 3rd grader is an honor roll student who has been competing in AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) track since the age of seven, where she runs the 100m, 200m, and the 400m.

Training under Coach Boris Jackson of Speed Plus, the decorated athlete competed in the AAU Junior Olympics in New Orleans last summer, and is currently ranked 9th in the nation in the 100m dash. Hannah has been featured in the publication “2011 Best Athletes in AAU” and has been awarded 23 medals already.

In addition to her athletic and academic prowess, little Miss Hannah Douglas finds time to play the piano, study Spanish, ride her bike, and roller skate. Hannah loves the Lord, and acknowledges that she has been blessed with multiple talents.

#12 BewaRe- TaX SCaMS The iRS has really increased their security, and they are on the look-out for fraudulent tax returns.

iRS is trying to protect us from identity theft and they are trying to protect us from Return preparer Scams. if you receive an email requesting your personal information for iRS

purposes, it is a scam. iRS will never send anyone an email. They correspond only through letters.

Return preparer scams: As noted by the IRS, beware of advertisements and “side of the road” filers for free money, or “no child/no W-2, no problem.” It’s more than likely a scam. There’s absolutely no way you can be eligible for a tax refund, especially with earned income credit- with no earned income. you may qualify for a refund having received unemployment income with federal taxes withheld. protect yourself, your personal information, and your reputation as a taxpayer and/or tax professional.

ORLANDO – Are you up to the challenge? Local churches and schools have accepted the challenge to live a healthy lifestyle by participating at the Sixth Annual Washington Shores 5K Walk & Health Fair. You, too, can accept the challenge and take part in the Washington Shores 5K Walk on Saturday, March 10 from 8:00am – 12:00pm at Hankins Park located at 1340 Lake Park Court, Orlando. You may register as an individual or create a walk team. The “challenge” is for teams from churches, schools, civic organizations, and businesses. Trophies and prizes will be given to the teams having the most participants. Registration for the free 5K Walk can be done online by visiting www.orchd.com under the events section.

This event is a collaboration between the Orange County Health Department, City of Orlando and Center for Change to encourage residents to live a healthier lifestyle by becoming more physically active and eating healthier.

“The Washington Shores 5K Walk has brought the community together with the common goal of getting active to live a healthy lifestyle. Walking is an excellent way to practice physical activity in order to live a healthy life”, said Dr. Kevin M. Sherin, Director of the Orange County Health Department.

Adults and children with healthy lifestyles are less likely to develop heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Together, these conditions accounted for over half (53.4%) the deaths in 2010, according to Florida statistics. In order to help control the risk factors for stroke and other chronic diseases, it is important to live a healthy lifestyle which includes: not smoking, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, reducing stress, and visiting a doctor to monitor your health.

This year the 3.1 mile walk will be lead by City Commissioner Samuel B. Ings, District 6 and other community leaders. In addition to the 3.1 mile route there will be a one mile route for senior adults and young children.

Attendees can also enjoy health screenings, health information, healthy snacks, cooking demonstrations, and other fun activities such as a hula hoop contest, rock climbing wall, stepping demonstration, martial arts demonstration, zumba, yoga and massages.

This year’s major sponsor is “All Into Health”. The all in project was created as a result of funding from a federal grant to support public health efforts to reduce tobacco use and exposure from second hand smoke. The objectives of the all in project are to inform and educate the Orange County community of the importance of tobacco-free environments, raise awareness of the health threats of second-hand smoke and increase motivation to quit.

For more information about this event, please contact the Orange County Health Department at 407-858-1464 or visit www.orchd.com.

I have to admit, this has been the year of the FALSE Eyelash…long lashes, feather lashes, rhinestone lashes,

short, medium and wrong lashes. Many are wearing them, many are doing them, but are you sure that the lashes you have on are the right ones for you?

Well, in this month’s beauty insider I’m going to give you pointers on how to choose the perfect lash for your eye shape and taste. When choosing false lashes, choose ones that will compliment your eyes and not overpower your eyes and face. What do I mean? Well, if you have small-shaped eyes don’t apply a false lash that is too full, long and extremely dark; and if you have large eyes, make sure the lash width covers the entire top lash line of your eyelid. Eye lashes that are too long and too full will definitely make your eyes look smaller, causing you to look like you have dots for eyes. Instead, choose a lash that has natural looking hairs. These lashes tend to have less hair and are usually short to medium in length, they look more realistic. For ladies who have bigger more round eyes, a fuller lash is ok. You have more options; but where I tend to see this eye shape go wrong, is in the unrealistic lengths. All I can say is WOW! It’s not ok to wear this type of lash length on a day to day basis. Special events, photo shoots maybe, but going to work with such long lashes is just too much. In your case, going with a fuller lash is more acceptable because rounder eyes can carry this type of look, but longer is not always

best especially for everyday wear.

Now for those of you who don’t want to make the weekly trip to the salon to get lashes applied, I’ve got easy DIY tips.

Here’s what you’ll need False lashesGlue TweezersTooth pickLiquid Eyeliner Mascara First, squirt out a pin-size drop of glue

(Glue will get tacky causing it to stick better to the lash and your eye lid)

Do all of your eye makeup (including mascara)Next, lay a flat mirror down on your

counter top (When you look over the mirror you will see the natural curve of your eye resulting in a close to the lash line application of the false lash)

Pick up the false lash with your tweezers, dip your tooth pick into the glue (Glue should be tacky) and apply glue along the lash band, not on the hairs.

Look down at your mirror and apply the lash.

Once lash is secure, use two fingers to press your natural lashes into the false lash, this will create the look that your false lashes are coming right out of your eyes.

Apply a thin coat of liquid liner to conceal the lash band and your False Eye lashes are perfectly done!Fa

Leviticus 19:18 “Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.”Last month, we talked about loving thy neighbor, but the rest of the verse stated, “As thyself.” Our youth are bombarded with positive and negative images over 80% of their day; but unfortunately, none of these images come from home. With the amount of information so readily available, our kids can easily get lost searching for an image that they believe will make them more attractive, slimmer, taller, more muscular or popular. As parents, the remaining 20% is our time to be used for reinforcing discipline and family values; yet, oftentimes we squander this time and we overload our kids with our own insecurities, fears, negative body image, negative words, and/or what we allow our kids to be exposed to that may effect the way they view themselves as well as the world.“Where there is no enemy within, the enemies outside cannot hurt you.” – African proverb Many of us think or at least believe that the words self-esteem and self-confidence are the same; although linked, they are not the same thing. Self-esteem is how much you like yourself, how you see yourself or basically what we see when we look in the mirror; whereas, self-confidence is more active, and describes our abilities and willingness to interact with the world around us.http://confident1.com/is-there-a-difference-between-self-esteem-and-self-confidenceWe are watching a generation of kids who follow fads and trends to mold and shape their esteem and confidence; yet the more troubling issue is, many parents support and/or reinforce these behaviors. From the way we speak to and around our kids, to the way we dress and/or present ourselves to the world, even the way we view health, strongly correlates to how our kids see themselves and how they deal with the outside world. To disguise our own internal shortcomings as adults, we often mask our issues with denial, humor, or we overcompensate in other areas of our lives. Listed below are ways to boost and promote your child’s self-esteem and self-confidence. Ways to promote a healthy Self-Esteem• Praise your child for good behavior - Look for opportunities to positively comment on the things they are doing well. Take the time to notice. We manage to notice when the behavior is not good and we need to

correct it. We often take good behavior for granted as something that SHOULD happen!

• Focus on the BEHAVIOR not on the CHILD - It’s the behavior you don’t like, you still love the child. For example; instead of saying something like “I don’t like your attitude,” say “I don’t like you speaking to me in that tone of voice.”

• Take an interest in what your child is doing – Start being involved long before they become teenagers. If you start when they’re young, it’s normal and is less likely to be viewed as intrusive when they hit their teenage years. Spend time with your child - Time spent with a parent is what will be remembered far more than material things.

• Attend as many of your child’s activities as possible - Mom and Dad on the sidelines or in the front row will be remembered for life.

www.more-selfesteem.com/tipsforparents.htmWays to promote a healthy Self-Confidence• Practice Attachment Parenting – When a parent practices responsive nurturing, a child gets a sense of self-value, because they learn cues on what should occur when the parents react to certain behaviors

• Improve Your Own Self-Confidence - A child's self-esteem is acquired, not inherited. Let your past go, because the walls that you have built up could be the very walls that prevent your child from reaching their maximum potential.

• Be a Positive Mirror - Much of a child's self-image comes not only from what the child perceives about him or herself, but from how he/she thinks others perceive them. When you give your child positive reflections, they learn to think well of themselves.

• Play with Your Child - You will learn a lot about your child—and yourself—during play. Playtime gives your child the message "You are worth my time. You are a valuable person."

For more details: Askdrsears.com/topics/…/12-ways-help-your-child-build-self-confidenceReview these ideas and ask yourself, “Am I giving my child the necessary support to succeed later in life?” Let’s work together to build our future, because as the late Whitney Houston sang, “I believe the children are our future” and without a strong start, how can we expect a strong a finish?

On January 6, 2012, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that a new regulation will be drafted and hopefully

published, which would allow waivers relating to unlawful presence to be filed stateside or in the U .S . With this new process, which is not law yet, once the waiver is approved in the U .S ., then individuals would be required to leave the U .S . and pick up their immigrant visas from the U .S . Embassy abroad and return to the U .S . . As an immigration attorney for 12 years, I commend DHS for proposing this initiative, but it may be GOOD and at the same time BAD for immigrants .

GOOd – This proposal would allow individuals who have been in the U .S . illegally and therefore subject to the 3 or 10 year ban if they leave the U .S ., to file a waiver in the U .S . showing “extreme hardship .” The current process for individuals who are in the U .S . illegally and not eligible to apply for a “green card” or residency in the U .S . is for them to apply at the U .S . Embassy in their native country . However, the hesitation for many immigrants in leaving the U .S . for processing at the Embassy abroad is that when they leave the U .S ., they are then subject to a 3 or 10 year ban from returning to the U .S . based on the time they spent illegally in the U .S . This proposal would only apply to waivers for unlawful presence and would not include waivers for any other grounds of inadmissibility . The GOOD is that it allows the illegal immigrant to be in the U .S . with his/her family while a decision is being made on the waiver . However, if the waiver is approved

then the illegal immigrant leaves the U .S ., picks up their immigrant visa from the Embassy abroad and re-enters the U .S . with the approved waiver (no longer subject to the 3 or 10 years ban) .

BAd – The potential pitfall in this proposal is what may happen to waivers filed in the U .S . that are denied . Currently, when a petition or waiver is denied, DHS places the person into removal or deportation proceedings . So, the BAD aspect of this proposal is illegal immigrants with denied waivers may be placed into removal/deportation proceedings . Also, when the illegal immigrant travels abroad with the approved waiver, he may have other unanticipated issues at the U .S . Embassy abroad that may require a different waiver be filed at the Embassy . If the Embassy requires another waiver and it is denied, then the illegal immigrant is left stuck in his native country . Remember, the proposal only covers unlawful presence waivers and does not cover other waivers for crimes, fraud, misrepresentation, etc . So, another BAD aspect of this proposal is that the Embassy abroad may create another roadblock to prevent the illegal immigrant entry into the U .S .

The details for this proposal are still being drafted and readers should wait for the final regulation to be published before seeking advice from an immigration attorney . Note, you should consult with an immigration attorney before leaving the U .S . for processing abroad as you may be subject to a ban from re-entering the U .S .

Directions1 . In a large bowl, toss together the spinach and

strawberries .

2 . In a medium bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, sugar, paprika, sesame seeds, and poppy seeds . Pour over the spinach and strawberries, and toss to coat .

Direction To make 1 color1 . Line large baking sheet with paper towels and top with

wire cooling rack .2 . In small bowl or cup, stir together 1/2 cup boiling water,

vinegar, and food coloring . Immerse eggs in dye, turning occasionally to ensure even coating, until desired color, about 5 minutes . Using slotted spoon or tongs, remove eggs from dye and transfer to rack to drain . Refrigerate when dry .

Here are some ways to create designs on your eggs:1 . Wrap a portion of the egg with a rubber band before

dyeing . Once the egg is dry, remove the rubber band to reveal the white, undyed strip underneath .

2 . Another way to block off portions of the egg: Affix stickers or tape in shapes such as daisies or dots before dyeing . Remove once the egg is dry .

3 . A third way to block off portions: Before dyeing, draw on the egg with a light-colored crayon or wax . If desired, once the egg is dry, the wax can be softened by holding the egg over a candle flame and then wiped off .

4 . All three of these methods can also be used to create two-toned eggs: Dye the whole egg a light color, such as pink, and let it dry . Then wrap the egg with a rubber band, affix stickers, or draw a design in crayon . Dye the egg a second color, such as blue . Once dry, remove the rubber band, stickers, or crayon . The areas blocked off will remain the first color (in this case, pink), while the rest of the egg will turn a combination of the 2 colors (in this case, purple) .

D.J. Richardson! Remember that name. Arena announcers around the

globe may be belting it out in the not too distant future. Seemingly, out of nowhere comes a name you may not know; but keep your ears open, and you soon will. Everyone loves a great fairytale, humble beginnings that evolve into something one could only dream about; but for one Orlando young man, this is no fairy tale. Growing up in a single-parent home, searching for his own identity during his adolescent years, and fumbling for it in the obscurity of his teenage years, he’s finally got his footing; and boy are his feet fixed!

By the time Daniel Richardson moved back to Orlando in the 7th grade, he already knew that basketball

was his game. Although he excelled in football and track as well, it was his love for shooting hoops

that motivated him to reject a full scholarship to play football at the college level,

upon graduation from First Baptist of Orlando’s First Academy. DJ

has found that every door isn’t your door; and the one’s that

belong to you will certainly open in the fashion and

timing ordained by God. A phenomenal

opportunity has come to DJ Richardson; but not without price, perseverance, and

practice. On the threshold of the next

dimension of his destiny, Richardson speaks

with Gospel Now about his bright future and the

blessings that have ushered him into this season.

Price, Perseverance, and Practice

Page 49: GospelNow 24th Edition

You've recently been contacted about an opportunity to "step up your game." Tell us how the opportunity came about.

Well, I play basketball at the local YMCA in DR. Philips. I was playing one day and a man saw me and liked my game. So, from there we just connected. He recently moved to Los Angles and is a body guard for some of the teams out there. He saw an opening for a point guard and immediately told them about me. So, he called me and gave me the details about everything, saying that some teams were looking for some young guards who are quick and fast. I am currently working with the agent now to decide which team I will sign with.

What in your life has prepared you for this moment?

Many things have prepared me for this moment. My mother always taught me to keep God first. She said if I take care of God, He would take care of me. I remember when I was playing AAU which is travel basketball, all the tournaments were on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday’s, and I would always be late or miss the first game because my mother would make sure that I was in church on the drums. What has prepared me the most for this moment in my life is a solid foundation in God. That’s something that will always keep me stable and ready for the next step; another is that I have been all across the United States playing basketball, so the traveling wouldn’t be a real issue. I have also played in a tournament in Hawaii.

What goes through your mind when you think of the years of practices and games that you participated in growing up in central Florida?

A lot of blood, sweat, tears, and body injuries… all of the time I put into getting to where I am, and about to be, are coming into fruition. I’ve wanted this since the day I started playing basketball, to excel to the next level and be all that I can be. .

Where did your love for basketball and your respect for the game come from?

The love is just there, like my love for God. It just is. But my respect comes from watching all of the great African American players who went through so much so that the younger generation would be able to get great opportunities, such as this one that I have coming up.

How old were you when you started playing, and when did you know this was your passion?

I’ve been playing my whole life. I can’t remember

when or who was my first team; but I do remember the first time I really played for a reason. I believe I was in elementary school, and I was playing on a traveling AAU team. The team’s name was the South Florida Heat. We were going to nationals where the best 50 teams in the nation would play for the title of the best team in the nation in our age group. My team went all the way to the championship game, but we lost. This is when I realized that basketball was serious, and that I wanted to play this game for the rest of my life.

New opportunities often come along with new anxieties. is there anything about this opportunity that is intimidating to you?

Just the fear of not being able to perform the way I know I can. Getting up there and basically failing. I know that this is in the plan of God, but there is always that fear of not living up to all of the hype that this is getting. But I believe that all of us have that one little piece of not wanting to fail in the back of our minds. My stepfather, whose guidance and commitment to me make him seem like my biological father, keeps me grounded in letting me know that I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me. He constantly pours into me to help me through these moments of anxieties. That prophetic gifting in him always taps in when I am feeling a moment of discouragement.

if you could write the end of the story, what would it sound like?

Daniel “deejay” Richardson, from the City of Orlando, Florida is an NBA Champion…going on to be one of the best point guards of his day. [He’s] Thanking all of the people who have put in time for, and with him, to obtain this outstanding goal. He now lives in Orlando with his wife and two kids, giving back to the city that gave him so much. I will make sure that my parents are well taken care of, because they have sacrificed so much for me.

What advice do you give to the young people you come in contact with?

My advice as of right now is school…take it as seriously as possible. It’s key to get your grades and your education. Never let any opportunities pass you by. If you see an opening, take it. Never lower your head in times of disappointment. The hard times will come and they will try their hardest to knock you down; but if you keep God first, and hold your head up high, and never stop working your hardest, then if God has that in your future, it will surely come to pass.

Gospel Now extends warm wishes and condolences to the entire family of

Minister Darryl Parramore; whose constant presence in pulpits, choir stands, and music pits will be missed.

Known to many as Minister P-more, the passionate praiser and minister of music led the gospel group, Nu Praze, directed choirs around the region, conducted workshops, led worship in countless services, exhorted congregations, pushed the pedals on many organs, and tickled the keys on many keyboards.

From his youth at Carter Tabernacle, singing in the choir and playing on the instruments, until his recent transition, Darryl Parramore, the psalmist, the preacher and the musician, has impacted many lives and has earned a permanent place in the Central Florida Faith Community.
