Permission Notes Every excursion, sporting event or off-site activity requires a risk assessment to be conducted by organising staff. Completed risk assessments are submitted to the principal as part of the approval process – no off-site activity proceeds without the principal’s approval. Permission notes are an important component to any excursion or sporting event and allow us, as organisers of these events, to take your children off-site with your permission. When you, as a parent, sign these permission notes you are essentially agreeing to the conditions as outlined on the permission note i.e. the date of the event, the time, the destination, supervisory arrangements, cost etc. – it is critical, therefore, that parents carefully read the details before signing and agree to the conditions of that event. It is also very important that once signed the permission notes are returned to the school prior to the advertised deadline. Brad Lewis Principal DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S COLUMN

NAPLAN Online School Readiness Test

This term, NSW schools will participate in a school readiness test between 14 August and 22 September 2017. The school readiness test is a ‘practice run’ for schools to assess their technology ahead of NAPLAN online. The readiness test is not an assessment of student ability. The readiness test allows schools to:

• become familiar with the NAPLAN online test format and processes

• check whether they have the technical capacity, rooms and devices to administer NAPLAN online

• provide students in NAPLAN years 3, 5, 7 and 9 with the opportunity to experience the online test question types and format by completing a practice NAPLAN online test.

Year 3 and 5 students from Gosford Public School will participate in the NAPLAN Online School Readiness Test between 11 and 15 September 2017. Further information is included in the flyer.

This coming Friday 28 July, Mrs Newton and I will attend a training session to ensure the smooth implementation of the test.

You Can Do It (YCDI)

Congratulations to all the students who received their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards last term. There were a large number of very worthy recipients.

We are eagerly anticipating a number of students receiving awards for their efforts this term: those who have yet to receive their bronze, those aspiring to silver and those determined to achieve their Gold Award, and ultimately the Lorikeet Legend badge.

Last year, students who achieved this prestigious award were treated to a magnificent sit-down-lunch prepared by staff and students who were involved in the Kitchen Garden Project. It is helpful for students to see their goals written down, to articulate them and revisit them daily. Goals could be displayed on their bedroom wall or on the fridge at home, as an ongoing reminder. Identifying behaviours that display our five YCDI foundation values of Getting Along, Persistence, Resilience, Confidence and Organisation, helps to keep goals at the forefront of their minds.

Rip It Up

We are currently collecting data for students who are involved in our Rip It Up program. Many have already completed 10 weeks of the program, at which stage data is collected and analysed. Congratulations to the students who are working extremely hard to improve their reading skills. I extend a special thank you to our trained, volunteer community members and School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs) for their positive efforts and support of our students.

Colour Changing Cabbage! Last week 6C conducted a science experiment to test whether purple cabbage could be used as a natural pH indicator. We discovered that purple cabbage contains a water-soluble pigment molecule called anthocyanin. We found that acidic solutions such as lemon juice turn cabbage water red, neutral solutions such as tap water turn the cabbage water purple, and alkaline solutions turn the water a yellow or green shade. This allowed us to approximate the pH number of a variety of liquids.

Thank you to everyone who has returned their library books, and a big congratulations to KG for being the only class in the school that had zero overdue books at the end of Term 2. They were very excited to be rewarded with a class party in the library. Scholastic Book Fair The Scholastic Book Fair has arrived at Gosford Public School, students will be given the opportunity to preview the books for sale on Friday and write out their ‘wish list’. Children will bring this list home so you can see the types of books that they are interested in buying. Please note that students have been advised that whilst they have written a ‘wish list’ this does not mean that they should expect to be purchasing these items. During Week 3, Monday 31 July – Thursday 3 August 2017 the Book Fair will be open for sales from 8:30 – 8:55am each morning and 2:55 – 3:30pm each afternoon by students accompanied by parents. Students can also purchase books during their library lessons. The fair will also be open during break 2 on Thursday. An EFTPOS terminal will be available at the Fair. If parents cannot attend, students can be sent to school with cash, or with prepaid credit slips (with receipt number recorded). A colouring competition is being held with a $15 Scholastic Book Fair voucher being awarded to a student in Kindergarten, Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3. All entries must be handed to Mrs Haley by Friday 28 July. No late entries will be accepted. The lucky winners will be announced on Monday morning. The $15 voucher entitles the winning student to purchase an item(s) from the book fair up to the value of $15. No cash prize will be given. The book fair is a great chance to promote reading and a wonderful way of raising much needed funds to purchase resources for our school Library that all of our students can enjoy. The more books we sell, the more funding our Library gets! I very much look forward to meeting you all at our Book Fair. Week 6 - Book Parade To help celebrate book week a book character parade will be held on Thursday 25 August at 12 noon. This year’s theme is ‘escape to everywhere’. All students are invited to dress as a character from a book and parents and carers are welcome to watch the parade. Please be assured that any book character is fine. Please do not go to any expense with the costumes. 2017 NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge

Congratulations to Toby 1S, Nancy 2/3W, Mia 3/4B, Laina 3/4S, Charlotte 5M, Micah 5N, Keith 5M and Paul 6C who completed the challenge over the holidays.

Environment News

School’s Tree Day: Friday 28 July This Friday, selected students will be planting native trees and shrubs near our Commemorative Garden. Our selection of plants have been carefully chosen and provided by Sustainable Natives, to accommodate our climate and soil. ‘Bush Tucker’

plants have also been selected, with a view to using them in our cooking lessons. We kindly thank our sponsors Zinfra, NSW Transport, Brian Hilton Toyota, Bunnings West Gosford and Sustainable Natives. Our Waste Free Wednesday initiative will resume this week. Please pack school lunchboxes full of fresh food and a limited amount of wrapping, each day, and especially on Wednesdays. Trading Tuesday will be held on Tuesdays during Week 4 and Week 8 this Term. Trading tickets are necessary for students to trade toys. Please see your class teacher or Mrs Wade for a Trading Ticket. What’s cooking this week in Little Sprouts Kitchen? This fortnight's menu: Bacon, silverbeet and cheese macaroni bake, herb and cheese scones, winter tabbouleh and pancakes with lemon and passionfruit. These ingredients will be freshly picked from our school garden to use in the kitchen: spring onions, celery, herbs, silverbeet, passionfruit, lettuce and eggs. Thank you to Mrs Elliot who kindly donated lemons from her garden.

Cooinda's AECG presentation afternoon was once again highly successful with over 120 attending. The AECG executive were happy to celebrate the wonderful achievements of our Indigenous students across primary and high schools throughout the Cooinda area.

Awards were presented to Gosford Public School student Jack for his interest and connection to country, Beata Biala for her endless support with a number of art projects over the years and Aunty Carol Sutherland for her knowledge and teaching of traditional Indigenous art techniques.

Principal Brad Lewis delivered a welcoming speech to those that attended while ex Gosford PS student Sharnae sang a song in her mob's language.

The Cooinda AECG executive are doing a wonderful job supporting our students and community.
