VOLUME 11, ISSUE 6
NO SCHOOL! Due to Inclement Weather
Starting in January, the enrollment process for the 2020-2021 school year will begin. The HWMS counselors
will be going into 6th and 7th grade Social Studies classrooms the first week of February to cover information about overall re-
quirements, available electives, and core class information. Your child will be bringing home an enrollment sheet for you to look at and sign after the counselors have made their visits. It is ex-
tremely important for you to have a conversation with your child about their class selections. CHS Freshman counselor, Mrs.
Parks will visit with 8th graders on January 22nd and 23rd dur-ing Social Studies regarding their enrollment for next year at
Campus High School. Each student will receive a packet with an enrollment booklet detailing the Kansas Curriculum require-ments. Please review this information thoroughly with your
child in order to prepare them not only for the mandates set for-ward by the state for achieving a high school diploma, but to help them establish their plan of study for college entrance re-
quirements. CHS will be hosting a Freshman parent information-al meeting on Mon., January 27th at 6:30pm in the auditorium
regarding freshman enrollment, followed by an Enrollment Pre-view in the commons from 7:30—8:30pm. CHS teachers will be contacting HWMS 8th graders to schedule an appointment dur-ing conferences Feb. 10th—12th to complete their Freshman
enrollment for the 2020-2021 school year.
Nine years ago the HWMS Counseling Office and the
TEAM WEST (We Excel Starting Today) leadership group started the Gorilla Giving Tree. This idea was based off the Sal-vation Army Angel Tree, but with focus on our own HWMS families and members of our community who needed help dur-ing the holidays. Because of the amazing support from staff, students and community, we have been able to help hundreds of students and their families over the years. The past few years our team has wanted to do even more. Our USD261 Mission is “The Relentless Pursuit of Excellence” and one of our district’s goals is “To strengthen community pride through strategic part-nerships.” Our team decided to reach out and help even more families within the Haysville community by collaborating with other organizations also providing assistance. The response has been overwhelming! Between our students, staff and outside donations we raised over $2700 to purchase toys, bedding, coats, clothing, toiletries, etc. for not only our HWMS fami-lies, but also the Campus High School “Hope That Fits” pro-gram, Haysville Community Outreach and numerous residents of Peachtree Plaza. HWMS wants to sincerely thank everyone who made this happen! It’s “GREAT” to be a GORILLA!

When inclement weather causes the school to close, it will be an-nounced between the hours of 6:00am and 8:00am on local radio and television stations. USD 261 uses the internet based calling system “School Messenger” to notify patrons of school closings. However, our system is only as good as the information that you have provided us. Please keep demographic information up to date, the home phone and email address are the contact information that the system utilizes. Simply log on to Powerschool any time to up-date any demographic changes you may have. All scheduled extracurricular school activities will be cancelled on days when school is closed due to weather.
Don’t forget!
Second semester starts when you
return to school on Tuesday, Jan.
7th. All students report to their 1st
semester 1st hour class to pick up a
new schedule. If you don’t have a
PE uniform for second semester
you can purchase one in the
office for $15.
Lifetouch will be at HWMS on Wednesday, January 15th to take casual pictures of all of our students during their Social Studies class. All students will receive a proof at a later date to bring home for you to view and you will have the option to purchase a picture packet of your choice. On Friday, January 17th they will return to take sport pics of our Boys’ Basketball teams/players after school.
Is your child going to be absent? Regular attendance is of the upmost importance for a child’s academic success. As circumstanc-es arise “please” make sure to contact our school office to let us know that your child will be absent for the day. When possible we would appreciate a documented excuse from any health related services.
