statesman, wit and

man of fashion.

His

epoch

was

marked in

literature and

art by

a

revival

of

the

classical ideals.

The excava-

tions at

Pompeii, begun

in

1

748,

were

reveal-

ing

treasures of

ancient

art which

public

taste

was

eagerly

turning

to for inspiration.

Silver-

ware,

furniture

and decorative

art

in

general

were

reverting to a

style

more

austere

and

subdued

than

that

which had preceded.

The

Brothers Adam

in

England have

left

us many

beautiful

examples

of

this

neo-classic

art,

and

in

France

the private apartments of

Queen

Marie

Antoinette

also

contain

many typical in-

stances

of

the

exquisite

workmanship

of

the

Louis

Seize

period.

In

its chaste and

severely

simple outline,

the

motif

of

the spoon

is truly characteristic

of the

times. The

decorative

effect

obtained

by

a

tasteful

arrangement of husks,

swags,

Grecian

border, and such

motifs of the

period,

is

most

happy

in producing a

design

thoroughly

repre-

sentative

of

Chesterfield

and his

epoch

in

ele-

gance

and

refinement worthy

of the period.

The

Chantilly is essentially

a

pattern

that

will

appeal

to

those

who seek in

the

family silver a certain simplicity

with

just

enough

ornament

to relieve

it of

the

appearance

of

plainness.

This is

French in

character

of design

and

derives its

name from

the famous

palace of

Chantilly, situated

some

twenty

odd

miles from

Paris.

It is of

the

time

of

Louis

XV.

Silversmithing

had

greatly

improved from

the

time

of

Louis

XIV.

to the

latter

part of

the

reign

of

Louis

XV.,

and this

was

a

period of

great refinement

of

taste in

designs

for silverware,

furniture,

and

decoration.

name

from Andre

Hercule de

Fleury, who

was

made

Prime Minister of

France

by

Louis

XV. in 1726.

He

was the immediate

successor

of the

Duke of

Bourbon,

whose

wretched

maladministration

necessitated

a

change

of

government.

A

man of unblem-

ished character and

chaste

ideals, Fleury did

much

to

curb

and

refine

the

inclination

to

over ornateness and

exaggeration in

all former

decorative

art,

which

the early period

of

the

reign

of Louis

XV.

had brought about. Sug-

gestive of the

refinement

of that

period, with

all the

freedom of

line

and charm

of floral

decoration which has always appealed to the

popular

taste,

the

Fleury

pattern

conceived
