The Calgary Hitmen (10-14-2-0) open a three-in-three weekend tonight when the Red Deer Rebels (15-12-2-2) visit the Scotiabank Saddledome. Calgary returns home following a four-game road trip through Saskatchewan that saw the Hitmen finish 2-2. The swing wrapped up with a 4-3 victory in Saskatoon on Wednesday. After trailing 2-0 less than 10 minutes into the first period, Calgary rallied with four unanswered goals to produce the come-from-behind win. Beck Malenstyn contributed with a pair of goals while Jake Bean and Matt Dorsey added single tallies. For Dorsey, it was his first career Western Hockey League marker. Bean and Jordy Stallard both chipped in with two assists, extending their point streaks to four games. Calgary sits fifth in the Central Division at 22 points, trailing Edmonton, holders of the final Wild Card spot, by six points. The Hitmen do have three games in hand on the Oil Kings. Red Deer is tied with Lethbridge for second in the division with 34 points, nine points back of the Central Division-leading Medicine Hat Tigers.

VS. RED DEER: Tonight is the third of seven regular season meetings between the Hitmen and Rebels. Red Deer holds a 2-0 advantage in the series. Over the last five years, the Hitmen have gone 12-8-0-2 against the Rebels including a 7-3-0-1 mark when playing at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Next meeting: Wednesday, Jan. 18 at Calgary.

Bean returned to the fold last Friday in Swift Current after missing 16 contests with an upper-body injury. He has points in six of his seven games this season. Carsen Twarynski (2g, 2a) and Beck Malenstyn (3g, 1a) each have points in their last three games. Cody Porter has recorded back-to-back wins. Matteo Gennaro (2g, 3a) has points in five of his last six games. Micheal Zipp (2a) and Lucas Cullen (1g, 1a) both saw their two-game point streaks halted Wednesday in Saskatoon.

LITTLE DOWN TIME: Tonight is Game 3 of Calgary’s busiest part of their 72-game regular season schedule. They play five games in six days culminating with Sunday’s home-ice contest against the Kamloops Blazers. THE POWER OF THREE: The Hitmen are 10-2-1-0 when holding the opposition to three goals or less. Conversely, Calgary is 0-12-1-0 when giving up four or more goals. HOME AND AWAY COMPARISON: The Hitmen are 4-5-1-0 when playing at home this season while Red Deer is 6-8-1-2 on the road. ROSTER MOVES: On Dec. 5, Calgary added 16-year-old forward Justyn Gurney to the roster as an affiliate player. Gurney was a sixth-round pick of the Hitmen, 117th overall, in the 2015 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. He made his WHL debut on Dec. 6 in Prince Albert, becoming the 32nd player to suit up for Calgary this season. In 16 games this season with the Valley West Hawks of the BC Major Midget League, the left winger has 24 points (8g, 16a). On Nov. 30, the Hitmen acquired 19-year-old defenceman Brady Reagan from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for a fourth-round selection in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. Reagan, a Calgary, Alberta product has played in 184 career games with the Hurricanes and Regina Pats, recording 37 points (9g, 28a) and 139 penalty minutes. In a separate transaction that same day, over-age forward Taylor Sanheim was placed on 20-year-old waivers. The Hitmen 25-player roster now includes 14 forwards, nine defencemen and two goalies. CANADA CALLS: Hitmen defenceman Jake Bean will depart following tonight’s game for Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp. He is one of 32 to players heading to Blainville, QC, from Dec. 11-14. The 2016 first-round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes had a sensational 2015-16 season where he led all WHL defenceman with 24 goals, setting a new single-season franchise record for most goals by a blueliner. He finished his sophomore year with 64 points, sixth-best among WHL rearguards, and was named co-winner of the club’s Tommy Gun’s Original Barbershop Top Defenceman Award as well as the WHL Eastern Conference Most Sportsmanlike Player. In total, 22 players will be selected to represent Canada at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship, starting on Boxing Day to Jan. 5, 2017, in Montreal, QC, and Toronto, ON. WORLD JUNIOR DEPARTURE: Hitmen rookie Vladislav Yeryomenko has left to join Team Belarus for the 2017 IIHF World Junior U20 Championship. The Division I Group A tournament will be held in Bremerhaven, Germany, from Dec. 11-17 and in addition to the host Germans, includes entries from Austria, France, Kazakhstan and Norway. Yeryomenko was selected by Calgary 46th overall in the 2016 CHL Import Draft.
