Principal’s Message
Cooperation - Respect – Responsibility
Operation Art
Congratulations to Enara, Sam, Annabell and Jorja whose artworks were chosen by the teachers. We can only submit 4 pieces so it was a difficult job selecting the best. Every year schools across New South Wales are invited to participate in Operation Art, an initiative of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in association with the New South Wales Department of Education. The Operation Art program provides a forum for schools and students to demonstrate their visual arts achievements and the winning artworks are hung in hospital wards to brighten the patients’ day. Thank you to the P&C for helping to finance our entries.
Excursion to the Skate Park
Now that the construction of the skate park is underway, students and staff will be going to have look at how it is being built. Dusty and the other Year 5 and 6 students have a keen interest in the project as Dusty took the initiative to approach the Carrathool Shire Council to see if a skate park could be built. Students need to bring back their walking note to participate in this excursion.
Riverina Cross Country
This Thursday Joshua will be competing in the 11 years 3 km race at Gundagai. All the students and staff wish him well and I’m sure he will do his best.
Student Attendance
Regular attendance at school for every student is essential if students are to achieve their potential, and increase their career and life options. Schools in partnerships with parents are responsible for promoting the regular attendance of students. While parents are legally responsible for the regular attendance of their children, school staff, as part of their duty of care, record and monitor

part and whole day absences.
An explanation for absence must be provided to the school within 7 days of the first day of any period of absence.
Partial absences can impact greatly on a student’s learning especially if it is a regular occurrence as students can miss a large part of a Key Learning Area.

K/1/2 News
Talking science again, in K/1/2 we started a new topic; Material World. We are investigating how the properties of a material affects its use. Firstly, we had to work out a way to sort materials. Olivia suggested whether we could build a house out of something and Reagan and Elizabeth suggested whether we could make a teddy out of something. So we sorted objects by whether they were hard or soft.
The plastic cup stumped us for a while and introduced a new term flexible. Next we sorted all the items by whether they were flexible. Students discovered that all soft items are flexible. We also sorted items by whether they are transparent. We learnt that a peg is not transparent even though you can see through it.
I wonder what we will discover next week?

3/4 News
In writing, students are continuing to develop their persuasive writing skills on whether the text ‘The BFG’ or the movie is better. Students are developing their arguments this week, learning more about how to edit the structure of their paragraphs and using reasons to support their arguments.

In our reading sessions we will continue to make connections to the texts we are reading and our own lives. We will begin looking at the messages and authors intentions within the texts.
During maths we will be focusing on multiples of 4 and solving division problems using our knowledge of multiplication facts. Students will learn about how these two number operations are related and share the ways they solve division problems during number talks.
In creative arts 3-6 have started developing our skills using sketching and line drawing. This week we will focus on adding detail to our artworks, using tone and shading.

This week students in Year 5/6 will undertake a series of mathematics assessments in the strands number, measurement and geometry and chance and data.
We are up to reading the last chapters of our whole class shared text Unreal. Our focus will be to write a text stating what we would do if we were prime minister for a day.

Goolgowi Golf Club News
Celebrating 50 Years
The Goolgowi Ex-Servicemen’s Club was the venue for celebrating the 50th year since the Goolgowi Golf Club was reformed.
Golf Club President Geoff Elliot welcomed all and handed the formalities for the night to MC and Life Member, Allan King.
Allan called all present to stand and observe a minute’s silence for all past members who had passed on. He also spoke of former Western Riverina delegates Ian Sneddon (Jerilderie) and John Lugsdin (Hay), as great supporters of the Goolgowi Golf Club. Allan then gave a good, all round report on the history of the club and how it was John

Watkins, Eddie Douglass and Alec Robertson who instigated the re-forming in 1969.
Allan spoke of the good times during the 1970s/80s when the golf also supported their own tennis and darts team in the local competition.
Other speakers were Jenny Fisher from Griffith who told a few hilarious ‘old time stories’. Jenny said she could go back more than 50 years.
Club President Geoff then called on Colleen Westrup, Robyn Brown, Jill Connelly, Wally McDermott and Ray Christoff to cut the cake.
At the conclusion of the golf day, Club president Geoff Elliot and Captain Ray Christoff called on Barrie and Ian Robertson, sons of foundation member Alec “Bolac” Robertson, to assist with the presentation.
