Swimming Carnival

It was great to see the team spirit at our swimming carnival last Wednesday. Students went in as many races as they could and cheered on fellow students. Thank you to Miss Sim and Mrs Brown for organising the carnival and to all the teachers for their assistance. Once again, a big thank you goes to the parents, family and community members who helped in so many different ways and to Lynne and Kathy our war cry judges.

I would especially like to thank the Carrathool Shire workers who worked early Wednesday morning to drain and clean the pool and surrounding areas after the horrendous dust storm on Tuesday. The school really appreciates your efforts and everyone helped to make it a very successful carnival.

Captains’ Induction

Last Friday our new School Captains, House Captains and Vice-Captains and SRC members received their badges and read their pledge to carry out their role to the best of their ability. It was a proud moment for these students and they have already begun their roles by organising their house for the swimming carnival and deciding on the Friday rewards and major whole school rewards for PBL.

Jo Henwood Storyteller

Carrathool Shire library has organised for Jo Henwood to visit the school on Friday 22 February. Jo is a storyteller, education officer, tour guide, educator and children's librarian &

part of the Australian Storytelling Guild community. Her website describes her as a teller of ‘stories of long ago and now, and never yet has been.’

Tom Curtain Speak up against Bullying

On Tuesday 26 February as part of his Speak Up tour, Tom Curtain will visit the school to speak to the students about bullying and its effects. Goolgowi will be joined by Carrathool and Rankins Springs’ students. They are busy learning the words of his song ‘Speak Up’. ‘Speak Up’ was written in memory of Amy ‘Dolly’ Everett and the legacy she unknowingly left behind. It was inspired by a drawing by Dolly that included the words “Speak even if your voice shakes”.

Whole School Parent Information Session

The staff will be presenting a parent information session on Tuesday 5 March at 6pm where the school’s expectations and class routines will be outlined. Each teacher will give a brief outline of the expectations in their classroom and I will present the school’s Wellbeing policy. This is a chance for parents and carers to ask questions and become more informed about the school. The session will be followed by the P&C meeting.

Schools Plus

Through the Schools Plus website, the school continues to raise money for our Robotics and Coding program and this year, we are raising funds to purchase 10 iPads, a fileserver to manage them and a subscription to ZuluDesk to download apps. I understand that the drought has had a huge impact on the community but if you have friends, family, clients or businesses who would like to donate to our worthy cause, please ask them to go to the following website: https://www.schoolsplus.org.au/robotics-coding-goolgowi-ps/ . It is great to see the improvement in student engagement as part of this program.

Past Student Visits

On Sunday, the school had a visit from Pauline Smith who went to Goolgowi PS in the early 1950s and now resides in London. Her father was the General Manager of the Carrathool Shire during this period. I enjoyed listening to her recall her days at the school

Uniform Order

An updated uniform order form has been sent home today. Uniforms orders are sent out once per term and there are limited items in stock.

The new spray jacket and tracksuit pants are now available to order.

Order forms, together with payment in full, need to be returned to the office by Monday 25 February. Uniform payments can also be made via the school’s website www.goolgowi-p.schools.nsw.gov.au.

Please expect some delay in delivery/supply as we transition to the new uniform.

If you have any questions about uniforms, please contact Mrs Brown in the office.

K/1/2 News

Our first full week in K/1/2 was an eventful one. For our kinders it was their first swimming carnival. They all participated in the war cries and races with such enthusiasm. We had multiple record breakers in the class.

For our learning we are starting to get used to the routine of literacy rotation. We investigated our classmates’ names, discovering how many syllables in each and how to write them. We also created some colourful self-portraits using water colour.

3/4 News

Students in 3/4 have been busy learning different maths games to help build their whole number understanding. This week we will continue to build our knowledge of place value, looking at expanded notation, ascending and descending order and comparing the size of numbers. Area is the

focus of our measurement lessons where they will compare and measure the area of different shapes. This week during literacy, students will be building on their imaginative stories which they have begun to plan.

Students will be learning more about predicting and visualising as they listen to the whole class texts by Roald Dahl ‘James and the Giant Peach’ and ‘The BFG’. This week students will begin their spelling activities. These spelling words will also be a part of their home learning grid.

5/6 News

A look back at Week 3, Term 1

Last week, we studied Jackie French’s book ‘Fire’. She was inspired to write this text after the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009. Fire is a moving and sensitive story of a natural disaster as seen through the eyes of a cockatoo. The fire mercilessly engulfs homes and land, leaving a devastating path of destruction. We looked at how French’s careful word choice creates strong visual images in the reader’s minds.

The students then had an attempt at writing their own descriptive paragraph about a bush fire. Below is some examples of the student’s first drafts. This week we are going to reflect on our writing to see if we can make further improvements to our word choices and sentence construction. I think you will agree, even though these are first drafts, the quality is already amazing.

Can all the students in Year 5/6 please bring in some photographs of their grandparents, great aunties or uncles or close family friends for a Seniors’ Week project.

Fire by Jarod

Sparks are rising, the beast grows as high as the moon. You can’t hide, because he’ll be there soon. He searches for his innocent victims. He snakes his way through the town. He burns and destroys everything in sight. The humans arrive with their vines that spray. The beast weakens, he shrinks, but it’s not enough. He grows once again his power recharges. He’ll start to hurt people and the environment once again.

A peaceful evening became chaos, when a fun campfire that could have done no harm, was not put out properly. Ash and hot coals burnt through the bottom of their shoes. Their skin burned from kilometres away. The fire snickered as its kill streak went up like a stopwatch. Children scream loudly and adults tremble in fear as they watch everything they own burn to the floor like a clump of wood and oil. It leaped across roads and jumped from tree to tree.

Black Saturday by Dylan

Cracking, crunching, creeping a small spark is slowly crawling through the dried eucalyptus leaves, lying lifeless on the dry earth. The flames rapidly grow, decimating everything in its path. Growing higher and higher devouring trees and destroying farms. The horrendous black smoke instantly spreading for miles, with no end. Deserted homes scorched to bare black bones. Now the tremendous inferno is too great to battle, fire fighters struggling to find safety. Everything in sight perished to the powerful heat of the appalling fire!

When the searing sun shone down from the sky, it made earth ever so dry. One disastrous move brought a terrifying monster awake. A mighty fiery beast that devoured everything in its path. A fire larger than anything the country had ever seen before. Tree by tree, town by town, the hungry firestorm danced and leapt consuming it all. Nothing was spared. Nothing at all. People tried to escape and flee but were trapped under its raining red sea. Brave firefighters fought, they tried

helplessly to beat the blaze, but were choked by the thick black smoky haze.

The Fire by Charlotte

“BANG” the eucalyptus tree fell to the ash burnt ground. It sizzles down the hill from the bush. The flames licking and eating everything in its path. It leaves is a path of destruction everywhere it travels. It quickly makes its way to a small town, soon to be ash. It feeds on the small town; children tremble as they watch their worldly possessions get burnt like petrol and wood. Adults hold their children close, as they are all they have left.

Friday Reward

Last week students enjoyed their first Friday reward, which was 10 minutes of extra play.

Hay was the lucky club last week but the money was not claimed, so the Riverina Club’s super-draw this week will be an

enormous $16,800.
