Book Review - The Google Story

Review:

In 1995 spring Sergey Brin met Larry Page at Stanford campus, California. Brin got PhD admission in computer

science at Stanford. Page had already done his graduation from Stanford, so they gave campus introduce

responsibility to Page. Their friendship started on that day.

After winter vacation they shifted to Microsoft sponsored William gate computer science building with their

friends & faculty. From that day onwards they downloaded total world web & they started search those pages

through links. This project they chose as their doctoral thesis. From this links they started giving rankings. For this

work they named as “Page Ranking”.

In 1997 Page Rank showed a way to start search engine with the name of Black Rub. After some days they changed

their Black Rub name to Google.

First they are given access to Stanford students, staff with the name of www.google.stanford.edu. In Stanford

society professor Alison attracted for this. Day by day users are increasing, so they need to increase the capacity of

their hard disk, but they don’t have their own budget to buy hard disks. So they bought cheap parts from outside

market and they made machines and they use their maximum limit of credit cards also for purchasing the parts.

In 1998 they are given their lice permission to other companies. But most of the companies did not show interest

to use their product. So Brin & Page decided to improve more features to their search engine. First they said to

their family, friends, neighbors about search engine and they ask feedback from them how to improve more. By

the end of 1998 summer they added 24 billion web page data. Day by day page count also increased.

At that time one of their professors arranged a meeting with Mr. Andy Bechtolsheim, one of the founders of sun

micro systems. They explain to Andy what they were doing and how they can earn money through their search

technology licenses. Andy was attracted with their ideas and immediately gave Rs.100000$ cheque to them.

They started their first office in a garage at Menlo Park. They left their study for business purpose. Within 5 months

of time Google quests 50000 challenges.

In 1999 first half Google started with 8 members group, they moved their office to Palo Alto downtown. One PC

magazine announced Google is one of top 100 search engine. After that they got a client “Red Hat”. They

approached two high technology offices in San Francisco Silicon Wally. By the spring of 1999 the two companies

invested 25 million dollars in Google.

After this they started to recruit new employees. They provided free drinks & food to their employees. They moved

their office to California mountain view. By the end of 1999 per Google search 7 million page averages.

“In dictionaries also added Google named as Quest”

The reason I choose this book because I was eager to know about Google after watching the move “The

Internship”. Now everyone knows Google is search engine but providing data for search engine is a passion for

Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Before 1998 they don’t have any idea how to expand this, how earn money through

search engine but after getting funds from Mr. Andy Bechtolsheim their plans, ideas everything changed. Step by

step they started, Google Maps, Gmail, Poogle, Google News, YouTube etc…. Now we know Google is in which

position.
