Goodwill Keystone Area has declared Thursday, March 20, the fi rst day of spring, as the day for the Epic Spring Donation Drive - a day set aside to clean out and donate…in epic proportions!

Goodwill Keystone Area operates 43 stores and donation centers in 22 central and southeastern Pennsylvania counties. The revenue generated from our stores fund programs and services that help create opportunities for people with disabilities and

other barriers to employment. Last year, 3,563 people received life-changing services from Goodwill Keystone Area thanks to donations.

Keep Goodwill® within the time-honored tradition of spring cleaning.

The winter of 2014 packed quite a punch. As the much anticipated spring season arrives, I thought I’d take a moment to talk to you about the great American custom of spring cleaning! With the promise of warm weather and a new beginning, spring is a great time of year to clear out the “stuff” that we no longer need or use. As you and your family clean and declutter this spring, please remember that donating your gently-used clothing and household goods is a great way to support many local charities and the planet. And by donating to a charitable organization, your gifts are tax deductible. Many charities, including Goodwill, have online valuation guides to help you determine a fair deduction for your generous gift.

After a busy day of spring cleaning, deliver the items to Goodwill. Please be aware that many of the brightly colored donation boxes around town are not actually operated by charities, and some that claim to be charities do not provide services in our local communities. I always suggest

that you treat the donation of your “stuff” with the same care you would when donating your time or money. Give to an organization you know and trust that provides services in your community.

Your local Goodwill Store and Donation Center is ready to receive your generous gifts. When you arrive, you will be met by a friendly person who will help you unload your car and send you on your way with a receipt. Best of all, your gift will help a neighbor with a disability or other barrier to independence reach their fullest potential, right here, in our community.

Goodwill® for the “A”

A Northampton Community College student chose Goodwill Keystone Area to be part of his project.

Sophomore Timothy Prock, 2012 graduate of North Schuylkill High School and resident of Frackville, PA, recently hosted a campus-wide donation drive at Northampton Community College to benefit Goodwill Keystone Area. Tim and classmates Zach Kades and Megan Vega Torres advertised the donation drive through social media and posters during the fall semester. We met up with Tim and discussed his experience.

Can you tell us about the class project at Northampton?

The project was for our Social Problems Class. We had to pick a social problem and go out in the community and help solve the problem. Our goals were to help Goodwill and hold a clothing drive.

Why did you choose Goodwill for your class project?

Back in high school one of my friends’ house burned down and Goodwill helped them out. Ever since then, it opened my eyes and made me want to help other people.

How did the project start and what steps did you take to organize the drive?

Our project started with an idea of having a clothing drive. I went to the local Goodwill store and asked how to get a drive started. After that, it took off. We had a meeting with Goodwill Marketing Coordinator Annette Kaiser, who provided bins and posters for us to put around the school. After that, every week we took clothing to the local Goodwill.

What did you learn from hosting the donation drive?

We learned a lot from doing the project with Goodwill. We never knew how much Goodwill did for the community. They help out with training and offer jobs to people with disabilities. Before we worked with Goodwill, we only

thought about clothing, not job training.

Would you choose Goodwill again?

I would choose Goodwill in a HEARTBEAT!

The Foundation has awarded a grant to Goodwill® Keystone Area to initiate a pilot project for the Goodwill Careers Start Here Education Initiative.

Many of the individuals who come to Goodwill face barriers to employment that have prevented them from reaching their full potential. Goodwill assists these individuals by providing employment; however, many of the jobs available through Goodwill are entry level with minimal education requirements.

Goodwill Keystone Area is best

suited for developing individuals with barriers to employment to take the next step on the career ladder. Goodwill is a leader, with over 65 years of local experience in helping employees develop a positive work ethic and soft skills essential for employment.

Good Careers Start Here (Good Careers) is a new initiative that will help transition people beyond Goodwill through the completion of a high school equivalency diploma, a certifi cate program in a technical fi eld or a two-year associates degree in a high demand career.

Through the support of a Goodwill Career Navigator, which

helps to build relationships and solve problems, and scholarship resources, participants will be prepared to pursue job opportunities beyond Goodwill, that offer higher wages, life-long career options and long-term self-suffi ciency.

Over the next 18 months the Good Careers Pilot Program will provide resources and support services for 15 income-eligible Goodwill employees to begin their journey.

Gather donations and take to Bon-Ton from March 13-29.

The Bon-Ton and Goodwill have teamed up for the Spring Goodwill Sale. Bring your donations to your local Bon-Ton and receive a 25% off coupon for each item donated. The sale will run from Thursday, March 13 to Saturday, March 29.

Donations gathered through this event directly fund Goodwill’s mission of supporting persons with disabilities and other barriers to independence in achieving their fullest potential as workers and members of the broader community.

Bon-Ton Goodwill

SaleThe Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts work with Goodwill® to collect donations.

Dozens of Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts recently participated in the Good Turn for Goodwill Project, a collaborative service project with Goodwill Keystone Area.

Scouts were awarded a Goodwill patch for collecting and donating gently-used clothing and housewares. Donations were made September 1 - January 31 to our 43 stores and donation centers throughout our 22 Pennsylvania counties.

In all, 23 service-oriented Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops collected 1,023 bags of gently-used clothing and housewares. That made for a total of 13,299 gallons of donations.

Scout Troop 777 collected from their neighborhoods, families and friends. Additionally, scouts and their families participated in the Go Fetch Your Stuff donation drive held at the Cressona Mall in Pottsville and St. John’s Church in Tamaqua. There, they were greeted by our mascot Good Dog, enjoyed hot chocolate and made crafts from recycled T-shirts.

Thanks to all of the troop leaders, parents and Girl and Boy Scouts for supporting Goodwill.

Scouts Honor

Alexa Kunkle of Schuylkill County Girl Scout Troop 31058 hosted a

donation drive at her pediatrician’s office and collected 41 bags of

donations. Thanks, Alexa!

Donate Your Old Computers

Dell Reconnect Program and Goodwill partner.

The public can drop off computers and related accessories like printers, keyboards and monitors at any Goodwill Keystone Area

donation center. Goodwill participates in the Dell Reconnect computer recycling program, making e-cycling convenient and easy. Dell Reconnect is designed for residential consumers who wish to recycle older computers.

Goodwills from across the country, including Goodwill Keystone Area, have partnered with Dell Reconnect to help divert

millions of pounds of e-waste from landfills each year. Last year, Goodwill Keystone Area kept 393,868 lbs. of computers out of landfills.

Red Cross and Goodwill® Partner

The American Red Cross and Goodwill Keystone Area join forces to help people in Pennsylvania.

Goodwill Keystone Area is pleased to announce its partnership with the American Red Cross of Central Pennsylvania, which will allow both non-profits to better serve the community during a crisis.

The partnership, officially kicks-off in March, which is Red Cross month, with a donation drive from Sunday, March 9 to Saturday, March 15 to collect clothing and other items.

During the kick-off drive and during times of large disasters in Central Pennsylvania, the community can help by donating clothing and other items to Goodwill. In return, Goodwill will provide the Red Cross with gift cards to help families and individuals displaced by local disasters, such as home fires.

“This will allow the families we care for to replace clothing and other items that were lost in a disaster. In January alone, more than 75 families in Central Pennsylvania faced the devastation of a home fire or other disaster,” said Ellen Kyzer, Regional Chief Executive Officer, American Red Cross.

Goodwill Keystone Area President & CEO Ron Kratofil said, “We live in an area where people care and want to help their neighbors. Goodwill Keystone Area is honored to be able to partner with the Red Cross in times of disaster. It’s overwhelming when you’ve lost things that are important to you. When a fire or natural disaster hits, we want to make sure that families get the immediate help that they need.”

“Last year, our national headquarters challenged all of the Red Cross Chapters across the country to form partnerships with their local Goodwill offices in order to direct donations of physical goods to their

organization in times of disaster,” said Kyzer. “We look forward to working together with Goodwill Keystone Area during times of disaster, in order to better utilize donated funds and material goods from the community.”

The Red Cross helps those who have been affected by disasters and, while the organization provides assistance including shelter, the Red Cross is not able to accept donations of clothing or household goods due to the resources needed to sort, store and distribute donated items. Goodwill Keystone Area already has the resources and logistics needed to accomplish this task. This partnership will align the strengths of each organization with the community’s generosity to help local residents in need.
