Yaama,

I hope you have all had a chance to rest and enjoy a good, safe, and happy break over the school holidays and I would like to thank all the families who ensured their children were back in time for school to start in Term 2. Happily, we have started this term the same way we finished Term 1; calm, hardworking and with the students trying their best to be safe, respectful learners. I look forward to working with you over the rest of the year to improve our school even further.

NAPLAN On an annual basis, Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit for an assessment known as NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy). The assessments help the school ascertain the skill levels of our students so that teachers can better cater for their learning needs in the classroom. NAPLAN assessments will be held from the 10th-12th May this year. Parents of students sitting the exams have received a note with more information. Should any parents wish to speak to their child’s teacher or myself about these assessments, please contact the school.

Rugby League Representatives I would like to congratulate both Trevor Boney and Lincoln Wood for making it to the North West Representative Level for Rugby League. They were given the opportunity to trial for the State team in matches in Tamworth on Wednesday 27th April. Both boys played hard and fair and were a credit to the school and their families. Lincoln was successful in gaining a place in the possible/probable squad and was unlucky not to make it further. I am sure that both boys will be given more opportunities to exhibit their talents throughout the year. I would also like to thank Kevin Hooper and Karen Wood for driving and supervising the boys whilst away. I am sure the boys greatly appreciated your efforts.

SRC Goodooga Central School has prioritised creating an effective SRC which can add student voice to the running of the school. The school believes our students are capable of making valuable contributions to school programs and initiatives and believes when students make a contribution to their education, they will have a more successful experience at school. To develop our SRC’s skills, the Primary Leaders recently attended a Student Leadership Development Course in Moree. Miss Inglis and George Lane supervised the students on the day and reported that the day was highly engaging and beneficial for the students as they were able to take away many great ideas to implement in our school. I look forward to Naikoa, Damo and Kyanne sharing their experiences with the rest of the SRC at their next meeting.

AECG The next AECG meeting will be held on Tuesday 10th May. I look forward to communicating and consulting with the community on a number of matters at this meeting. One discussion point at the meeting will be a new initiative at the school called eBeacon. eBeacon will assist our secondary students accessing personalised business and careers education through the use of technology. Mrs Jane Artup from the Beacon Foundation will be at the meeting to share more information on the initiative with the community. I hope to see as many of you as possible there.

Housie Last year the school commissioned a “Snapshot” of our Aboriginal Education practices. One of the recommendations of this “Snapshot” was to hold more community events. It was suggested by the community that a way of bringing more community into the school was to hold some bingo and housie game. These game have now being organised and the first one will be held at 4:00PM on Thursday 19th April. School staff will be available to talk to during this time and they will share information and ask for input into school initiatives. We hope to see you all there.

Athletics Carnival It was great to see the rain this week but unfortunately this has led to the cancellation of our Athletics Carnival. The carnival will now be held on Friday 3rd June. More information will be distributed closer to the date.

Canteen Our canteen is operated by an awesome group of volunteers which is headed by Joanne Hooper. On occasions our regular group of volunteers cannot make it in for various reasons. To ensure the successful running of the canteen every day we need to increase the number of volunteers we have available. If you would like to volunteer your time at the canteen, even if it is just for a few hours please contact the school. I know the students would greatly appreciate it.

As always I hope to see you in and around the school as the term progresses. Yaluu, Nathan Forbes Principal

This term the students will be having great fun while learning about ‘Dinosaurs and more’ in Science. They will look at the

features of modern animals and compare them with the dinosaurs’

skeletons and become a school dinosaur hunter where they will

look at the protective features of dinosaurs, search for some fossils

and create a ‘dino’ shield.

Mother’s Day is fast approaching and the students have been

listening to books about mums, have written

some great things about them and made some

wonderful....oops. sorry.....

that is a surprise; you will have to wait until

Sunday.

These first two weeks of school, K-1-2 has been busy learning about ANZAC, Mother’s Day and practising for the

Athletics Carnival. Last week K-1-2 learnt about ANZAC and participated in the school’s ANZAC day service and said

the school prayer with respect and pride.
