Bringing stories to life
It all begins with a story.
The best theater begins with a story, penned by a gifted playwright and interpreted by an equally talented director. A great theater season draws from a wide range of voices and styles, bringing together a collection of work that entertains, and also challenges our ideas of who we are, how we got here and where we are going.
The 2007/2008 Season reflected the Goodman’s dedication to seeking out, nurturing and sharing with its audiences the greatest storytellers of the past, present and future. The season explored stories of great passion, romance, politics, tragedy, loss and love throughout a variety of time periods, cultures and genres. Our artists brought these stories to life on stage with the imagination, intelligence and artistry that continue to make the Goodman one of our country’s leading regional theater companies.

When you attend a play at the Goodman you
may come upon a classic that has not been
seen on stage for years, or you may witness the
first public performance of a play with a bright
future. The Goodman is dedicated to presenting
living works of art, whether classic or contem-
porary, with an emphasis on new work by the
finest writers in the country. It all begins with
a compelling story.
The future of a theater rests ultimately on its relationship with
the artists who create the plays for its stages. Our 2007/2008
Season was devoted to taking the kinds of risks and exploring
the bold artistic visions that truly make an artistic organization
come alive.
We covered a lot of ground during the 2007/2008 Season, from
world premieres to innovative revivals. The journey began with
Passion Play: a cycle in three parts, an original work by Pulitzer
Prize-nominated playwright Sarah Ruhl. We moved on to
intrigue and mystery with Conor McPherson’s Shining City.
I was thrilled to bring this piece, with a remarkable new local
cast, to Chicago after the privilege of directing its American
premiere on Broadway.
In the winter we celebrated the work of Horton Foote with A
Trip to Bountiful in the Albert, and Talking Pictures and two
one-act plays, Blind Date and The Actor, in the Owen. We were
honored to produce this retrospective of Foote’s contribution to
American theater for our audiences.
For the next production in the Albert, Ifa Bayeza penned a new
play, The Ballad of Emmett Till. This poignant and heartbreak-
ing play was developed in the Goodman’s 2006 New Stages
Series and is a powerful addition to the American theater
repertoire. Capping the Albert Season was Resident Director
Chuck Smith’s revival of Ain’t Misbehavin’, the electrifying
L e T T e r f r O m T h e A r T I S T I c D I r e c T O r
musical showcase of legendary composer/performer Thomas
“Fats” Waller.
The Owen season started with Eduardo Machado’s The Cook;
in the spring, the Owen was home to the world premiere of
Brett Neveu’s Gas For Less, part of the Goodman’s 2007 New
Stages Series.
In August, Resident Artistic Associate Henry Godinez curated
our 4th biennial Latino Theatre Festival. The spectacular line-
up of plays, music, movement and puppetry brought some of
the most extraordinary Latino theater artists in the world to
our stages.
During the holiday season we celebrated the 30th annual pro-
duction of A Christmas Carol, a holiday classic that has become
the entry point to theater for a legion of young people, as well as
an annual tradition for thousands of families.
As always, the exemplary work found onstage in our theaters
has been matched by those offstage who made these produc-
tions possible. Executive Director Roche Schulfer provided
steadfast support for the season while helping to forge the long-
range goals of the theater. And Artistic Associates Frank Galati,
Henry Godinez, Steve Scott, Chuck Smith, Regina Taylor and
Mary Zimmerman continued to dedicate their considerable
talents to an artistic vision that constantly expands in breadth
and depth.
Thank you for your patronage; we hope that you will continue
to explore the human experience through the most vital of art
forms, live theater.

To produce theater is to create something both
ephemeral and concrete that lives as much
in the imagination of the audience as on the
stage. Theater must continually challenge and
recreate itself to produce work that is fresh,
entertaining and thought-provoking. The
2007/2008 Season brilliantly showcased the
Goodman’s mission to present diverse, com-
pelling works of art.
With its resources and dedicated staff, the Goodman has trans-
formed the visions of playwrights, directors and designers from
around the world into theatrical brilliance, and has created a
supportive environment where artists are inspired to do their
best work.
I am pleased to review institutional highlights of the 2007/2008
Season:
• Public support reached $6.1 million—a 3.4% increase from
last season
• Corporate contributions increased 22% from last season
• Our Annual Fund increased 17% from last season
• We sold our millionth ticket to A Christmas Carol
• Ticket sales were at 88% of capacity
• We created three new education and community programs
• We presented our fourth biennial Latino Theatre Festival
These are only some of the results from a remarkable year. The
challenge for the future will be to uphold our high artistic stan-
dards, attract new audiences and secure new sources of public
support. We must continue to explore our art and challenge
ourselves and our audiences with theater that forces us to re-
examine ourselves and the world around us.
L e T T e r f r O m T h e e x e c u T I v e D I r e c T O r
Thanks to Bob for his friendship and the vision he brings to the
Goodman. I am grateful to Steve Scott, Kathy Murphy, Peter
Calibraro, Dorlisa Martin, Lori Kleinerman, Scott Conn, Willa
Taylor, Denise Schneider and the rest of the Goodman staff who
have devoted their time and talents to creating this extraordi-
nary season. The members of our boards have once again given
generously of their wisdom and resources to keep the Goodman
among the healthiest theaters in the country.
Under the leadership of Chairman Shawn M. Donnelley, the
community has shown its enthusiastic support for the work
that we do. Her steadfast commitment to theater in Chicago,
particularly to the Goodman, is remarkable. It is a pleasure
to work with her and I look forward to many more years
of collaboration.
There is not space here to express the fullness of our gratitude
to those who collaborated with us. Their commitment is un-
rivaled. We ask you to note the names of the individuals, corpo-
rations, foundations and government agencies on the following
pages that make our work possible.

I am delighted to share the 2007/2008
Annual Report of Goodman Theatre. It was
a pleasure to partner with Artistic Director
Robert Falls and Executive Director Roche
Schulfer to help bring the season to Chicago
audiences. Under Robert Falls’ artistic leader-
ship we produced a powerful season of produc-
tions which were acclaimed by audiences and
critics alike. The outstanding administrative
staff, with Roche Schulfer at the helm, worked
together with our volunteer leadership to achieve the highest
public support results in the Goodman’s history.
Since its founding in 1925, Goodman Theatre has maintained its
place at the forefront of American theater. Through its dynamic
and diverse productions, the Goodman has paved the way for
the city’s now flourishing theater community and helped create
the audiences that keep it alive. The theaters many education
and community engagement programs and collaborations with
other Chicago performing arts organizations illustrate that the
Goodman is a theater for all, reflecting the rich diversity of our
city – on its stages and in its audiences.
The Goodman moves towards the future with a dedication
to entertaining and engaging our audiences, our city and our
world. With over 200 theaters, both large and small, Chicago is
at the center of the American theater. As the oldest and largest
nonprofit theater in the city, we seek to be an ambassador to the
world and to bring the world’s stories to our stages. Thank you
for embracing our vision and for being a part of the Goodman
for many years to come.

The ability to maintain highest artistic standards depends upon
the continued success of our fundraising efforts. The con-
tributions of resources and time from my fellow trustees,
the Women’s Board and Scenemakers Council have been
invaluable. The support of our loyal subscribers and donors
has contributed immeasurably to our success and allows us to
produce thought-provoking and compelling theater.
I express my deep appreciation to all who helped make our
2007/2008 Season an overwhelming success. Please know that
that everyone associated with the Goodman is deeply grateful
for your support.
See you at the theater,

Our most successful annual Gala in the 30-
year history of the Women’s Board highlighted
the 2007/2008 Season and raised more than
$1,000,000 for the Goodman’s education and
community programs. More than 700 people
attended the Gala on May 17 at The Fairmont
Chicago. Stage and screen star Bebe Neuwirth
entertained the guests with her repertoire of
show tunes, followed by dinner and dancing to
the Gentlemen of Leisure.
I wish to thank Gala Chair Joan Clifford for her spectacular ef-
forts in organizing and overseeing this momentous occasion. I
also want to express my appreciation for the other members of
the Women’s Board who lent their many talents to make this
event such a success. I am equally grateful to Goodman
Trustee Keith Green, who served as Corporate Chair of the
event. A very special thanks to our Major Gala Sponsors Joan

On December 2, we enjoyed a benefit to celebrate the 30th
anniversary of A Christmas Carol. The event began with holiday
entertainment and lunch in the Narcissus Room at Macy’s, fol-
lowed by a matinee performance of the holiday classic. Thank
you to Women’s Board Benefit Co-Chair Joy Dreimann for her
hard work and inspired leadership on this event.
All of these activities led to a very rewarding season for the
Goodman’s Women’s Board. I wish to thank the individuals and
corporations who sponsored our events, contributed auction
items and provided in-kind services; and, of course, the guests
who attended. Your generosity was appreciated beyond mea-
sure. Please see page 29 for a complete listing of our sponsors.
It has been an honor to lead such a remarkable group of women
for the last two years. They made my job an enjoyable one during
my tenure. Also, special thanks to the Development staff for
making our work easier. It is with great pride and satisfaction
that I turn over the Presidency to my very capable successor,
Karen Pigott. I am sure that she will be just as grateful as I have
been to work with such an extraordinary group of women,
and for such a worthwhile organization as the Goodman.

The progress of theater relies on the development of new works that tell
inspired, original stories about the unique—and the universal—experi-
ences in life. As one of America’s leading regional theaters, Goodman
Theatre is committed to the development of new plays that aspire to
become tomorrow’s classics, such as Passion Play: a cycle in three parts
by Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright Sarah ruhl. The Goodman
supports new work like Passion Play by commissioning plays from new
and established playwrights, holding public readings and workshops of
pieces in progress and presenting full productions on our stages.
During the 2007/2008 Season, the new Work Development com-
mittee, co-chaired by Trustees eva Losacco and eugene Zeffren, provided
ongoing support for these efforts; 2007/2008 commissions included:
Dartmoor Prison, a new play by carlyle Brown that chronicles the true
story of African American sailors captured by the British. Brown’s
other plays include Pure Confidence, The Fula from America and The
Negro of Peter the Great.
Diagram of a Paper Airplane, a new play by carlos murillo, a chicago-
based writer and visiting Professor at the Theatre School of DePaul
university. murillo’s plays include dark play, or stories for boys and
Mimesophobia (or Before and After).
Without, a new play by Sean Graney, a chicago-based director
and playwright, and Artistic Director of The hypocrites, an award-
winning theater company known for its innovative approach to
contemporary and modern classics.
A new play by Sarah ruhl, whose award-winning plays include The Clean
House (finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama), Dead Man’s Cell Phone
and Eurydice.
A new play by rebecca Gilman, a chicago-based playwright and frequent
Goodman collaborator whose work includes Spinning Into Butter, Boy
Gets Girl, Blue Surge and Dollhouse.

Playwrights like eduardo machado create stories that invite us into
other cultures, eras and realities. A good story challenges, entertains
and stimulates, creating a unique context for audiences to learn about the
world around them. The Goodman draws upon the stories on our stages
to develop education and community events for each production, such as
the Context series for The Cook which explored the ways race and culture
are addressed in post-revolutionary cuba.
In addition to the hallmark Student Subscription Series (page 12) and
the General Theater Studies (page 14) programs, the Goodman’s edu-
cation and community programs include:
Cindy Bandle Young Critics is a program for 11th-grade girls named for
cindy Bandle, who passed away in 2005 after serving as the Goodman’s
press director for 20 years. This program is a joint venture with the Asso-
ciation for Women Journalists; each of the 18 participants is mentored by
a professional journalist and is treated as a working member of the press
for all Goodman productions. The students’ stories, podcast reviews and
features are available on the Goodman education blog provided in the
Student Subscription Series section of www.goodmaneacp.typepad.com.
Context: Discourse and Discussion is a series that provides audiences
with the opportunity to engage in in-depth discussions about the pro-
ductions on the Goodman stages. The discussions give audiences the
chance to explore the connections between what they see onstage
and what they experience in the world. each event is recorded as part of
WBeZ’s “chicago Amplified” audio archives. The recordings are acces-
sible at www.chicagopublicradio.org/Program_AMP.aspx.

Theatre collective and local collage artists to develop StoryQuilt
workshops designed for children ages 8 through 12. each workshop
explored a different theme from a Goodman production. families
enjoyed tales from master storytellers, learned the elements of story
structure and created quilt panels to visually represent their own stories.

The Student Subscription Series provides free sub-
scriptions for thousands of school children each year.
On november 27, more than 800 students new to the
program attended the 30th-anniversary production of
A Christmas Carol and were treated to a post-show dis-
cussion with the actors. Dickens’ classic story contains
a wide range of themes for teachers to discuss in their
classrooms, from the Industrial revolution to ghost
stories to holiday traditions, making A Christmas Carol
an ideal introduction to live theater for young people.
The Student Subscription Series is about much more
than just seeing a play. Teachers work with the Good-
man throughout the year to design lesson plans for
each production they will see. The program not only
gives students a rich theatergoing experience, but
also aids in the development of critical thinking and
communication skills, and sparks curiosity and enthu-
siasm for learning.
The Goodman provides training and publishes study
guides for teachers that contain information and
activities that relate the plays to required chicago
Public Schools curricula. The program also includes
classroom visits by actors, artists and members of
the theater’s education and community programs
staff. more than 2,800 students from 47 schools
participated in the program during the 2007/2008
Season. many of the materials created for the Student
Subscription Series are viewable and downloadable on

Irish playwright conor mcPherson drew from the oral
storytelling tradition of his ancestors to create his
contemporary ghost story Shining City. mcPherson’s
gripping play inspired students in the Goodman’s 2008
General Theater Studies program to apply oral history
and personal storytelling techniques to their explora-
tion of how we become the people we are and how we
reconcile our public and private identities.
The General Theater Studies program offers students
ages 14 through 19 an intensive introduction to theater.
This unique summer program introduces participants
to all elements of the creation of theater, both on
the stage and behind the scenes, with a focus on
storytelling. At the end of the six-week program, the
participants present an original performance for fam-
ily, friends and Goodman staff that weaves together
personal stories and the stories they collect through
interviews and research, ultimately exploring how they
each contribute to the human drama.

Goodman Theatre’s commitment to diversity was
exemplified in its production of The Ballad of Emmett
Till, a world-premiere play by emerging playwright Ifa
Bayeza. At once a wholly universal story and one rooted
in chicago history, the play encapsulated the social,
political and personal struggles of the African Ameri-
can experience in a single event that helped spark the
civil rights movement.
The Ballad of Emmett Till was one of eight plays chosen
from more than 600 submissions for a summer work-
shop at The O’neill Theater center’s national Play-
wrights conference. “In theater the playwright is king,”
remarked Artistic Director robert falls, “and it is the
responsibility of the Goodman and leading theaters
nationwide to create opportunities for writers to
develop new work in collaboration with world-class
directors. cultivating a wide range of new American
plays is fundamental to the Goodman’s goals of quality,
diversity and community.”
The Ballad of Emmett Till followed the Goodman’s
tradition of producing diverse work as well as build-
ing and nurturing relationships with talented artists
such as the late August Wilson, eduardo machado,
José rivera, Tanya Saracho, resident Director chuck
Smith, Artistic Associate regina Taylor and resident
Artistic Associate henry Godinez.

22 | COLLABORATION
A successful play depends on a good story and collaboration.
When a playwright writes a script, collaboration starts almost
immediately. In a way, the entire theater becomes responsible
for lifting the story off the page and translating it live onstage
for audiences to experience.
Ain’t Misbehavin’ is a perfect example of collaboration between
artists and their subject. The project was conceived by richard
maltby, Jr., who partnered with murray horwitz to bring fats
Waller’s music and personal story to life. Together they created both
a musical feast and a loving tribute to a brilliant and complex artist.
collaboration occurs not only between artists, but also between
theaters and cities, and even between a theater and its community.
Groups that work together can obtain greater resources, recognition
and reward when facing competition for resources and audiences.
The Goodman has collaborative relationships with many
other theater companies in chicago. During the 2007/2008
Season the Goodman’s Owen Theatre was home to congo
Square’s Black Nativity and the chicago children’s Theatre’s
Esperanza Rising during the Latino Theatre festival.
In April 2008, the Goodman served as a hub for Looptopia, the
nation’s only dusk-to-dawn cultural and artistic spectacle. for
this event, the Goodman partnered with Serendipity Theatre
collective to present a special edition of Serendipity’s signature
“2nd Story” storytelling programs, featuring behind-the-scenes
tales of real-life experiences at the Goodman. Presented infor-
mally in the Goodman lobby, these unique stories delighted
audiences while challenging them to create their own “true-
life” narratives.

24 | LATINO THEATRE FESTIVAL
Goodman Theatre’s biennial Latino Theatre festival
brings international stories to the stage. curated by
Goodman resident Artistic Associate henry Godinez,
the 2008 festival included performances from Latin
America, Spain, Los Angeles, new York and chicago.
The electrifying lineup of music, movement and
puppetry included the wildly popular culture clash,
the enchanting puppetry of mexico’s De La Oreja
Al Corazón, a vivacious one-woman show from
Adriana Sevan and marta carrasco’s seductive piece
J’arrive...!, among many other thrilling productions,
events and workshops. There was something for every-
one at this theatrical feast for the senses.
“for the fourth biennial celebration of Latino culture,
we invited audiences to join the Goodman in a celebra-
tion of Latino culture with performances from some
of the most extraordinary Latino theater artists in the
world,” says festival curator and Goodman resident
Artistic Associate henry Godinez.

The Scenemakers Council is a diverse group of young professionals who act
as ambassadors to raise philanthropic support for the theater. They also
spearhead a special subscription package called The Scene, composed of three
pre-show receptions at downtown Chicago hot spots, followed by three shows
at the Goodman. This year, The Scene Subscribers enjoyed networking at the
Redhead Piano Bar, Trattoria No. 10 and Sopraffina Marketcaffè before com-
ing to the Goodman to see The Cook, Talking Pictures and Ain’t Misbehavin’.
For the 2007/2008 Season, the Scenemakers Council outdid itself by selling
nearly 175 The Scene subscriptions—more than double the number sold during
the 2006/2007 Season.

The Minority Arts Fellowship Program continued during the 2007/2008 Season.
Funded by a grant from the Joyce Foundation, this program provided entry- and
mid-level minority arts administrators with a season-long position with the
Goodman’s management staff. Logan Vaughn, who had joined the theater as a
casting intern in the fall, was selected as the third and final Joyce Fellow.
Goodman Theatre’s Internship Program provides a challenging and stimulating expe-
rience for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as early-career professionals
who are committed to theater management. Each season, approximately 30 interns
gain experience in virtually every department at the theater.
Goodman interns are introduced to the network of theater professionals through
working with Goodman staff and artists and by participating in Intern Forums.
These forums bring interns together with theater professionals from around the city
for brown-bag lunches and informal conversation about topics ranging from the role
of critics, to fundraising, to the Goodman’s place on the international theater scene,
to embarking on a career in theater.
The accumulation of such experiences in the Goodman’s supportive environment
builds interns’ confidence and sharpens their commitment to the mission of pro-
fessional regional theater. Successful internships can lead not only to future job
opportunities, but also to lifelong friendships and professional associations

Goodman Theatre is chicago’s oldest and largest not-for-profit theater, interna-
tionally renowned for the quality of its productions, the depth and diversity of
its artistic leadership, and for its many community and educational programs.
The vision of the Goodman is to become the premier cultural organization in
chicago through productions and community programs that make an essential
contribution to the quality of life in our society.
The Goodman has identified three institutional values that form the basis for
the vision and objectives of Goodman Theatre, and serve as guiding pillars for
our productions and programming. These values are:
Q u A L I T Y
Goodman Theatre believes that live theater illuminates the past, informs the
present and imagines the future. We seek to provide our audiences with the de-
finitive theater experience. We strive to give our artists the resources that enable
them to do the best possible work with the highest standards of excellence.
D I v e r S I T Y
Goodman Theatre believes that respect for diversity is a cornerstone of our com-
munity and our society. Our work features a variety of aesthetics, cultures and
modes of theatrical expression. We are committed to promoting creativity, col-
laboration, artistic risk-taking, freedom of expression and cultural diversity.
c O m m u n I T Y
Goodman Theatre believes that live theater plays a unique role in the educa-
tional, social and economic development of a community. for example, theater
develops cognitive skills, emotional growth and moral awareness, particularly
in young people. Since the Goodman is a part of the community, we believe that
we have a responsibility to improve the quality of life through our productions
and educational programs.
