    ShortNarrativeDescriptionofResearch,TeachingandServiceInterests

    Myscholarshipfocusesonthesocialdeterminantsofmentalhealthofmarginalizedpopulations,includingAmericanIndiansandrefugeesandimmigrantsfromAsia,theMiddleEast,Africa,andtheAmericas.Iworkcollaborativelywithcommunitiestounderstandandaddressthementalhealthconsequencesofexposuretohighlystressfulsocialenvironmentsandtodevelopandassessprocessesthatpromotehealing,well-being,andsocialjustice.Thus,myscholarshipiscommunityengaged,andIutilizeavarietyofparticipatoryresearchapproaches.Ihavesubstantialexpertiseinbothqualitativeandquantitativeresearchmethodsandincombiningthesemethodstomaximizethestrengthsofeach.Ihavealsobeensuccessfulinobtainingexternalfundingtosupportmyresearch,includingmultipleNIHgrants(F31,K01,R01,coreresearchprojectofU54)andgrantsfromtheCentersforDiseaseControlandPreventionandfromseveralfoundations.

    Throughmultipleprojects,Ihavebuiltevidenceofthenecessityofreducingsocialinequitiesrelatedtorace,gender,andnationalitytoimprovementalhealthandreducementalhealthdisparities.Myresearchalsoengageswiththecorequestionofhowtomosteffectivelyaddresssocialdeterminantsofmentalhealth.Thiscrucialresearchquestionhasdrivenmetodevelopcommunity-basedparticipatoryapproachesthatconnectresourcesofuniversitiestotheirbroadercommunitiesandthatemphasizemutuallearningandsocialchange,suchasinnovativeinterventionswithrefugeeandAmericanIndiancommunities.

    Thisinterventionscholarshipisalsopedagogicallyinnovativebecauseitconnectsresearchandteachingtocreatemeaningfulexperiencesforstudentsthathelpthemtoseetheneedforsocialchangeandtodevelopskillstocreateandstudythischange.Iseektofurtherstudents’opportunitiestoapplytheirtheoreticalknowledgetorealissuesinthecommunitythroughcommunity-engagedcourses.Inaddition,Ihaveexperienceteachingcoursesthatfocusonresearchmethodsandhealthandsocialinequalities.Inallofthesecourses,Iaimtohelpstudentsthinkcriticallyabouttheworldandtheirassumptionsaboutthemselvesandothers,whilefurtheringtheirknowledgeoftheparticularcontentarea.Inaddition,becausemyresearchhighlightstheimportanceofunderstandingtherootcausesofmentalhealthproblemsandhowcertaintreatmentsareprivilegedoverothers,ithasledmetocriticallyexamineissuesofculturalcompetencyinthetrainingofhealthcareprovidersanddeliveryofhealthservices.Buildingonthisresearch,myteachingalsoinvolvesco-directingdiversityeducationfortheUNMSchoolofMedicine.

    Asacommunity-engagedscholar,myworkalsoinvolvesnumerousactivitiesthatarenotalways“visible”withintheacademy.TheserangefromdevelopingcommunitypartnershipsandinvolvingcommunitymembersinallaspectsoftheresearchprocesstomentoringtraineesandstudentsfromthecommunitieswithwhichIwork,andsharingknowledgeanddisseminatingresultsthroughnon-traditionalmeans(e.g.,communitypresentationsandtrainings).ThesecommitmentsareimportanttowhoIamasascholarandarealignedwiththeaimsofpublicsociology.MyservicealsoincludesparticipationonNationalInstituteofHealthgrantreviewpanels,BoardMemberfortheGlobalAllianceforBehavioralHealth&SocialJustice,EditorialBoardMemberoftheAmericanJournalofCommunityPsychology,reviewingfornumerousotherjournals,andmembershiponmanyUniversityandDepartmentcommittees,includingchairingtheDepartmentofSociologyUndergraduateCommitteeandservingontheUNMFeministResearchInstituteBoardandtheAcademicFreedom&TenureCommittee.
